Woodblocks, mouth-organ tunes, a distant brass band or two, the odd minor key. Like a more bourgeois version of the Clangers' music.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 21 October 2002 16:52 (twenty-three years ago)

i reckon they like glockenspeil's as well.

Slayer.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 21 October 2002 17:55 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, they like Slayer on Hattifatteners' Island

jel -- (jel), Monday, 21 October 2002 17:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I agree about the woodwinds... Maybe something like Volapuk or the Penguin Cafe Orchestra... Though I could see Moomintroll and Snorkmaiden grooving to some hand-clappy pop tunes - The Shins or mid-period Sloan, perhaps. Mum?

I would be distraught if none of them liked Aavikko's first 7".

Didn't Sharon Godco have a band called the Hattifatteners?

(I didn't see whatever inspired this thread, so I'm probably stumbling unwanted into something I don't understand, but Tom's answer seems about right. I can't think of much that fits the bill though. I can picture them being soundtracked by the Vince Guaraldi trio, but that's probably just the big white noses and the thought of the skating music against Moominland Midwinter weather that does it.)

Rebecca (reb), Monday, 21 October 2002 21:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I think they'd listen to Moloko's I Am Not A Doctor, Cornelius and anything by Füxa.

And The Streets, obviously.

Charlie (Charlie), Monday, 21 October 2002 22:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Roxette's "Joyride", obviously.

robin carmody (robin carmody), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 00:18 (twenty-three years ago)

They listen to nothing but music that resembles the Cure's 'Like Cockatoos'... or at very least that's what they play whenever a jungle springs up in the living room.

Not how I would have transcribed that, but a much better effort than I could have done. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 15:15 (twenty-three years ago)

(That, of course, was the acoustic guitar part with the slide from the bass line capping it off at the end.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 15:46 (twenty-three years ago)

the BEST line tho was he left a trace of bubbles, bleeding in his stead

Dan, awww. I didn't even know you cared.

Kim (Kim), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 21:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I just realized it's "gardens", not "flowers".

"There are a thousand things," he said
"I'll never say those things to you again..."
And turning on his heel
He left a trace of bubbles
Bleeding in his stead
And in her head
A picture of a boy who left her lonely in the rain
And all around the night sang out LIKE COCKATOOS...

That song changed my life (along with "One More Time", "All I Want", "Hot! Hot! Hot!"... Side 3 of that double-album may very well be their finest moment).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 22:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I weep on behalf of the poor Moomins.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 22:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I think you mean to say that you weep you cannot share in this perfect and overwhelming beauty.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 00:32 (twenty-three years ago)
