Making Plans for Night - b-side club mix?

Johnny Fever, Friday, 12 September 2014 16:46 (ten years ago)

whoops! (Should be "Nigel", obv)

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Friday, 12 September 2014 16:48 (ten years ago)

Numbers on the Boards way out of place on this list.

Man, when I tell you she was cool, she was red hot, I mean she was (intheblanks), Friday, 12 September 2014 16:50 (ten years ago)

SFJ kinda deflating the concept of perfect songs by just including whatever songs pop into his head.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 12 September 2014 16:53 (ten years ago)

The Nas song he chose to put on one of these lists was "Made You Look". The song w/ the hook:

"They shootin! Ha Made You Look! Youre a slave to a page in my rhyme book! Getting big money playboy your times up, where the gangstas at, where the dimes at"

If Nas isn't coming with lyrics theres no point listening to Nas.

Raccoon Tanuki, Friday, 12 September 2014 17:06 (ten years ago)

well he's no travis scott

k3vin k., Friday, 12 September 2014 17:28 (ten years ago)

I don't like this list nearly as much as the first one..."Good Times Bad Times."

clemenza, Saturday, 13 September 2014 14:26 (ten years ago)

"kerosene" probably? or "at last i am free"

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Saturday, 13 September 2014 14:29 (ten years ago)

William DeVaughn - Be Thankful for What You Got

truly is a perfect song

a guy named Christian White who represents the typical white Christian (Eric H.), Saturday, 13 September 2014 14:37 (ten years ago)

or yeah that one

wtf is "tennis court" doing here

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Saturday, 13 September 2014 14:40 (ten years ago)

ikr, horrible song. also that substandard tove lo remix...

dyl, Saturday, 13 September 2014 15:25 (ten years ago)

such perfect, so song

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Saturday, 13 September 2014 15:27 (ten years ago)

they're not songs, they're recordings >:(

een, Saturday, 13 September 2014 15:56 (ten years ago)

Johhny Fever OTM. This does really seem like a random list of basically good songs. What's the point again? Does he have a list of Top 10 Unhappy Young Foster Children For Your Amusement?

dlp9001, Saturday, 13 September 2014 16:20 (ten years ago)

he has a list of Top 10 Unhappy Foster the People songs

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 13 September 2014 16:54 (ten years ago)

I had no idea my music taste was aligned so much with his. These two playlists are pretty much comprised of songs I also have on my favorite songs of all time playlist

Moka, Saturday, 13 September 2014 17:38 (ten years ago)

What's the point again?

Exactly. Sasha doesn't want to research and write about old music he hasn't listened to before, or much new music either

curmudgeon, Saturday, 13 September 2014 17:43 (ten years ago)

cool list sfj

Allen (etaeoe), Saturday, 13 September 2014 20:21 (ten years ago)

It's Sly even though it's not much fun. But fun isn't the point when there's a riot going on. Heavy heavy stuff

kornrulez6969, Sunday, 14 September 2014 04:00 (ten years ago)

I like this as a personal canon. Which has repercussions as the personal canon of the Critic For The New Yorker, but I like that he is using his vaunted position to like big up bad brains or whatever. (Nb I have never knowingly heard a bad brains song in my life.)

jaymc, Sunday, 14 September 2014 07:14 (ten years ago)

Like I think that is a big part of what is going here. He is trying to be like ok I have the authority of the critic of the New Yorker and I want to state that Rob base and ez rocks it takes two is the best song of 1976 to 1991 or whatever

jaymc, Sunday, 14 September 2014 07:17 (ten years ago)

#spinmagazine #nowhiney

jaymc, Sunday, 14 September 2014 07:24 (ten years ago)

hate to be that guy, but y'know, maybe "be thankful for what you got" would be a perfect song if the dude had GOTTEN AROUND TO WRITING A SECOND VERSE.

rushomancy, Sunday, 14 September 2014 19:39 (ten years ago)

seriously though, i love these songs, no hate from me

rushomancy, Sunday, 14 September 2014 19:40 (ten years ago)

Can't imagine what value a second verse would've added to a song that's already got diamonds in the back, a sun-roof top, and a gangsta lean.

a guy named Christian White who represents the typical white Christian (Eric H.), Sunday, 14 September 2014 19:45 (ten years ago)

i can't imagine what value a second part would've added to "in xanadu did kubla khan a stately pleasure-dome decree", either, but that doesn't mean i wouldn't still like to read it. :)

rushomancy, Sunday, 14 September 2014 21:12 (ten years ago)

i have long been deeply undecided between the short version and the long version of 'be thankful'

you know what the extra time adds to the diamonds, leaning, etc.

VIBRAPHONE

minutes and minutes of vibraphone

j., Sunday, 14 September 2014 21:59 (ten years ago)

one of these is genuinely perfect though, and it's Chic.

ewar woowar (or something), Sunday, 14 September 2014 22:03 (ten years ago)

Chic would be a shoe in on this poll if Robert Wyatt hadn't recorded an even more perfect version.

Oblique Strategies, Monday, 15 September 2014 01:16 (ten years ago)

i really like tons of songs on this one

call all destroyer, Monday, 15 September 2014 01:26 (ten years ago)

This is like someone's idea of a Diverse Mixtape.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 15 September 2014 01:26 (ten years ago)

i have long been deeply undecided between the short version and the long version of 'be thankful'

After listening to the Tom Moulton rework, I'm not conflicted:

Voted The Knife - Tom Tom Club a close second.

uxorious gazumping (monotony), Monday, 15 September 2014 02:56 (ten years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Thursday, 18 September 2014 00:01 (ten years ago)

a guy named Christian White who represents the typical white Christian (Eric H.), Friday, 19 September 2014 05:39 (ten years ago)

prob woulda gone jolene

the other song about butts in the top 5 (forksclovetofu), Friday, 19 September 2014 06:20 (ten years ago)

or jeez, maybe buggin out or big payback; this is not a fair choice here

the other song about butts in the top 5 (forksclovetofu), Friday, 19 September 2014 06:22 (ten years ago)

Would have voted Sponji Reggae. Lyrically terrible, but a top 10 Sly & Robbie groove.
