This is absolutely wrenching news.
Peter Gutteridge's role in NZ music was crucial. The Clean, the Chills, the Great Unwashed, Snapper, his own work and there's much more than that. And he only just played his first American solo show the other week.

Incredibly sad. He's been on my mind lately because Peter Jefferies is coming to town, but my brain kept telling me it was actually (no offense to Jefferies) Peter Gutteridge coming.

Huge interview with him from just last year.

Ms. Gracewood hosted Peter in NYC the other week.

I think about a lot of the Flying Nun acts all the time, actually. This absolutely vital music stemming from this tiny, remote country dense with great musicians, none of whom likely made a real living from music that has meant so much to so many. When you're younger modest indie level success might not hurt as much, but these brilliant artists are all well into middle age, and cult fame or even obscurity can't be a satisfying reward for so much genius.

Flying Nun has released a statement.

Normally ('normally'), when I hear the sad news of the passing of a musician whose work I admired greatly, I do what so many usually do, dig out old songs, remember the feelings. And of course I've shared plenty of links already tonight, because the music was that good and the feeling that deep.
But aside from a relisten to "Point That Thing..." itself, I can't seem to bear to go to his music right now. I was already fixing myself some dinner, then I sat and ate it, and checked the news some more, and shared more links, and now I'm typing this.
If I was younger, less aware than I am now -- it took me a while, I think -- I might have been more angry at the news. I'm not angry, though. I'm pretty numb. And mostly I'm just sad.
I'm just sad.

I should get Shotgun Blossom, I only have the first Snapper EP, which I love dearly. RIP, terribly sad.

A tough read at points. Obviously something happened on the flight back, but I feel knowing any more than that won't help.
― Ned Raggett, Saturday, 20 September 2014 22:37 (ten years ago)
there was a tribute on radio nz yesterday, not sure if it's archived or not.

Very curious about what happened on that flight. Not sure why this wasn't included in that article. Sort of irresponsible.
― kwhitehead, Monday, 22 September 2014 01:04 (ten years ago)
There could be a variety of reasons. Possibly having to do with NZ law?
― Ned Raggett, Monday, 22 September 2014 02:05 (ten years ago)
True Ned. But I would love to know those reasons. That article is a big tease.

Saw the Axemen on the weekend; they covered "Point That Thing..." as a tribute to Peter.
For what it's worth, I'm pretty sure "Buddy" is the most-covered Flying Nun song post-2000 - probably seen a dozen different bands cover it live over the years, from garage rock to country to electroclash to goth &c&c.
