wanted to listen to this album this week. i'm sure this is "FM" but going to wait until i hear again before i vote.

Bee OK, Thursday, 25 September 2014 01:41 (ten years ago)

"count souvenirs"

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 25 September 2014 01:42 (ten years ago)

like easily

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 25 September 2014 01:42 (ten years ago)

in the morning

Popture, Thursday, 25 September 2014 02:12 (ten years ago)

i've only heard in the morning but it's so good i don't care

linda cardellini (zachlyon), Thursday, 25 September 2014 04:36 (ten years ago)

Not hard to guess the 0 votes on this one

Simon H., Thursday, 25 September 2014 04:46 (ten years ago)

Toss up bwt Double Shadow & ITM for me.

Gumbercules? I love that guy! (Trayce), Thursday, 25 September 2014 05:31 (ten years ago)

"in the morning" is the only song i remember from this record

uxorious gazumping (monotony), Thursday, 25 September 2014 05:47 (ten years ago)

"In the Morning" is great but this record is more than just that one song.

Bee OK, Thursday, 25 September 2014 14:25 (ten years ago)

for me it's easily "FM", maybe the last JB song I really really liked, and one of the few songs of any band that's brought a tear to my eye

Maggie killed Quagmire (collest baby ever) (frogbs), Thursday, 25 September 2014 14:28 (ten years ago)

Have to go with FM, such a gorgeous song. I like all four of the Junior Boys albums but this is easily my favourite.

ArchCarrier, Thursday, 25 September 2014 15:15 (ten years ago)

this is 'like a child' vs 'fm' for me

ciderpress, Thursday, 25 September 2014 15:17 (ten years ago)

Wow I used to really like these guys but apparently they have four albums I haven't listened to at all?

Immediate Follower (NA), Thursday, 25 September 2014 15:25 (ten years ago)

One day I may dig 'em more but there's definitely diminishing returns after this album

Maggie killed Quagmire (collest baby ever) (frogbs), Thursday, 25 September 2014 15:40 (ten years ago)

Easy vote for "In the Morning" though yeah "FM" is nice too.

Immediate Follower (NA), Thursday, 25 September 2014 15:47 (ten years ago)

it's all true's highs match this album's imo

still fail to comprehend begone dull care

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 25 September 2014 16:24 (ten years ago)

Yeah, seems like this is the last great Junior Boys record. Miss the syncopated cut up beats of Last Exit after Johnny Dark left, but thought this was still really terrific last time I heard it. Will try to find some time to revisit it and vote.

MikoMcha, Thursday, 25 September 2014 16:28 (ten years ago)

BDG is undervalued. "Sneak a Picture" is such a jam.

Simon H., Thursday, 25 September 2014 16:33 (ten years ago)

"the equalizer" is another unbelievable jam on this record. think "in the morning" is one of my least favorite tbh

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 25 September 2014 16:38 (ten years ago)

i like the title track best, dunno why, chunkier i guess, reminds me of seeing it live / feeling the low end in the beat

i don't think this is bad at all but somehow subsequent albums drove me back to last exist mostly, when i want to listen to the jbeez

fm

plax (ico), Thursday, 25 September 2014 17:08 (ten years ago)

yes, the "gotta get thru this" influence evaporated after last exit and they just became the best of a particular "type" of band

plax (ico), Thursday, 25 September 2014 17:09 (ten years ago)

i can't tell which opinion baffles me more: ppl who think junior boys fell off after last exit vs ppl who have any time for begone dull care (or subsequent albums)

voting "the equalizer" because of the gorgeous melody and the heart-in-mouth chorus

lex pretend, Thursday, 25 September 2014 17:40 (ten years ago)

iirc begone dull care was real backloaded, the last few tracks were gorgeous

ciderpress, Thursday, 25 September 2014 18:09 (ten years ago)

there are a lot of nuanced opinions to be had about the junior boys

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 25 September 2014 18:16 (ten years ago)

"when no one cares"

Acting Crazy (Instrumental) (jed_), Saturday, 27 September 2014 00:49 (ten years ago)

i really like this record but i prefer BDC. The Animator is my favourite JBs song by some distance.

Acting Crazy (Instrumental) (jed_), Saturday, 27 September 2014 00:50 (ten years ago)

'so sleep' would get my vote if b-sides were eligible.

LIKE If you are against racism (omar little), Saturday, 27 September 2014 00:53 (ten years ago)

oh, i haven't heard that. i'll investigate.

so i did get around to listening to this. i felt it was front loaded. going to change my mind and actually vote for "Count Souvenirs."

Bee OK, Saturday, 27 September 2014 16:34 (ten years ago)

'Cause in the morning there's a million names to choose from

Bee OK, Sunday, 28 September 2014 04:20 (ten years ago)

I've said it elsewhere but I despise the production on this record. They sound like songs I'd love but they sound compressed to hell.

I voted for "Count Souvenirs" even though it seemed like the obvious choice, but kind of surprised to see what won and with such a huge margin.

nxd, Tuesday, 30 September 2014 08:46 (ten years ago)

one year passes...

barely any love for "like a child"???

j. winters (josh), Tuesday, 28 June 2016 06:29 (nine years ago)

eight years pass...

dang I would've loved this album in 2006, not sure why I'm just getting to it now. I'm thinking ourtunes was over by then and the station never got a copy.

moral ziosk (geoffreyess), Saturday, 14 September 2024 03:11 (ten months ago)

it's weird to (think I) know exactly what "Count Souvenirs" would've meant to me at the time but to be missing the memory, the emotional connection is only to now

moral ziosk (geoffreyess), Saturday, 14 September 2024 03:19 (ten months ago)

like my life in '06 was all old reviews, calling cards, "back at home." at least I had "L=P" by My Favorite.

moral ziosk (geoffreyess), Saturday, 14 September 2024 03:21 (ten months ago)

this one def stuck an emotional nerve with me back then, especially First Time and FM

frogbs, Saturday, 14 September 2024 03:23 (ten months ago)

Ok, I now have to hear this again

Bee OK, Saturday, 14 September 2024 03:39 (ten months ago)

Lol, poll is 10 years old

Bee OK, Saturday, 14 September 2024 03:40 (ten months ago)

"count souvenirs" was the one song that never hit me when i had this album on repeat back then and it's easily my favorite now. which is weird, because when i listen to it now it has all the marks of a song i should've liked back then. to this day i cannot get over how great the "when no one cares" into "FM" closer sequence is.

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Saturday, 14 September 2024 03:47 (ten months ago)

they really gotta reissue this and Last Exit

fwiw I never bought the idea that their output declined after this - Begone Dull Care is a step down I think but the three after have all been fantastic

frogbs, Saturday, 14 September 2024 03:57 (ten months ago)

realized i probably spun the dead horse ep more than LG.

their entire output is worthwhile. waiting game is so good.

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Saturday, 14 September 2024 04:28 (ten months ago)

good album

jaymc, Sunday, 15 September 2024 03:29 (ten months ago)

first two are obviously masterpieces, subsequent three are excellent if not quite as consistently great, and Waiting Game was a pretty major return to form that I feel flew slightly under the radar. Side 2 of the latter stands alongside STIG and LE imo

Paul Ponzi, Sunday, 15 September 2024 12:38 (ten months ago)

every junior boys album is like a city i've lived in

ivy., Sunday, 15 September 2024 12:59 (ten months ago)

I’m loving all the love for Waiting Game around here

Xgau Murder Spa (nikola), Sunday, 15 September 2024 12:59 (ten months ago)

I’ve reached the view that It’s All True is maybe their best work - just to wall bangers.

Tim F, Sunday, 15 September 2024 16:19 (ten months ago)

How I'd rank them these days:

So This Is Goodbye
Last Exit
Waiting Game
Begone Dull Care (underrated)
It's All True
Big Black Coat (the only one that doesn't feel essential)

Not much between those top two. They're both perfect.
