does she have any other good songs? i've liked "habits" from the beginning but find it difficult to be v interested in her. i have to rmde at some of those track titles especially "not on drugs" (which seems to actually be a single??)

dyl, Thursday, 2 October 2014 05:03 (ten years ago)

Love Ballad and Paradise are both very good. Neither of them appear to be on the album, though.

Wristy Hurlington (ShariVari), Thursday, 2 October 2014 06:56 (ten years ago)

This checks all the boxes of things I typically like, but enh...I dunno. Even "Habits," the song everyone seems to gravitate toward, goes in one ear and out the other.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 2 October 2014 06:58 (ten years ago)

i think i have had the lyrics "High all the time. To keep you off my mind. Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh." in my head for over a month now. it won't go away, don't mind though.

or it isn't

Johnny Fever, Friday, 14 November 2014 20:52 (ten years ago)

I will rep for pretty much the first half of the album at least as sharp, cynical swedepop with earworm hooks. Tove's voice isn't overly showy but it's entirely serviceable and fits the material nicely.

So beautiful cow (forksclovetofu), Friday, 14 November 2014 20:55 (ten years ago)

I still feel the same as I did upthread. Like, this is custom-made for my usual taste, but something about it just doesn't strike me. Don't know what it is or why.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 14 November 2014 20:58 (ten years ago)

johnny crunch, Friday, 14 November 2014 21:24 (ten years ago)

i first heard habits a year & a half ago, listened to it obsessively then. when the album finally dropped was kinda like "oh, she made a record finally." only listened once and wasn't like, bowled over by the whole album but deserves another shake

Been enjoying this the last few weeks although for some strange reason it's not getting officially released over here (UK) until 2015

groovypanda, Friday, 14 November 2014 22:19 (ten years ago)

ilm is sleeping on this album, like forksclovetofu has said, there are some serious nuggets on this record. it does take awhile to get into it but the rewards are amazing, will be on my list for ILM's annual countdown.

j. winters (josh), Thursday, 18 August 2016 13:57 (eight years ago)

yeah i really dislike that song. "Talking Body" is great though.

Am I the only one who finds the line "we fuck for life" to be simultaneously nonsensical, gratuitous and obnoxious? Even as a second language thing it's just embarrassingly bad.

Naive Teen Idol, Friday, 19 August 2016 01:27 (eight years ago)

i thought it was a somewhat disarming but ultimately great line. do love that song tho, by far the best thing she has done.

dyl, Friday, 19 August 2016 16:56 (eight years ago)

xp I remember watching a video interview where she explained the process of writing that song and it was originally "we love for life" but she thought that was too extreme

art baengels (monotony), Friday, 19 August 2016 22:41 (eight years ago)

That's the version I listen to as the kids like the song.

groovypanda, Tuesday, 23 August 2016 19:59 (eight years ago)

p sure the speaker of Not On Drugs is actually on drugs, which is part of what makes it a good song.

socka flocka-jones (man alive), Tuesday, 23 August 2016 21:36 (eight years ago)

it was originally "we love for life" but she thought that was too extreme

Yes because "we fuck for life"is just so much less extreme.

Naive Teen Idol, Thursday, 25 August 2016 00:25 (eight years ago)

we fuck for SPARTAAAAA!

mh 😏, Thursday, 25 August 2016 02:01 (eight years ago)

yeah it is a weird line -- does it mean marriage? Lifetime fuck buddy privileges? Strange thing to say in a song that's mostly just about lust too.

socka flocka-jones (man alive), Thursday, 25 August 2016 03:50 (eight years ago)

Talking Body came on when I was in the gym today and it sounded weirdly generic to me -- the way her voice is produced in particular. Also, the line is changed to "love for life" in the radio version.

i love the lyrics but a big fan of the juxtaposition of awkward scando english phrasing and lurid queer slutpositivity in her music. also i first misheard that one line as ‘only one dick that’s obama’ and it still makes me giggle each time

I went to see her last night and it was really excellent. I had heard a few things about her voice not being up to task but she sounded absolutely fine to me and the energy was unreal. I also should concede that I was wrong upthread about Lady Wood - it's still my least favourite of her albums but revisiting it and it's not the dud I seemed to think it was.

boxedjoy, Tuesday, 10 March 2020 13:15 (five years ago)

also the show was sold out and she seems to have a super-loyal fanbase of queer teenagers which, personally avoiding Twitter and Instagram, I had totally missed? I mean "pop music is popular with young people" is hardly a surprise but even at the back of the crowd where we were you could see everyone - and I mean everyone - mouthing along to every single lyric. There were a lot of queer couples being openly affectionate and it was wonderful as a guy in his thirties to see young people being so casual and unashamed about holding hands and kissing their partners, it is so far removed from when I was 18 and I would have been terrified to even hold someone's hand in public. I love that her music and her lyrics have helped carve out this idea of pop music as a safe space.

boxedjoy, Tuesday, 10 March 2020 13:20 (five years ago)

(I mean, obviously, pop music in the past decade has embraced LGBT values/fandom etc, its not exclusive to Tove Lo and she's not even really at the forefront of it or anything, but having her be able to sing a song like "Bad As The Boys" and it be no big deal is just really cheering to me)

boxedjoy, Tuesday, 10 March 2020 13:22 (five years ago)

man, yr making me feel bad that I couldn't make it to her shows at Brooklyn steel last month… I really would like to hear her songs really loud with her present in a room full of people who love her… I think she's going to around for the long haul…

Still surprised that "No One Dies From Love" made it all the way up to #8 in the ILM 2022 Singles poll. I now see that it was mentioned in this thread but not talked about that much. I did post the video in the campaigning thread but there was no reaction to it, so I thought it wouldn't even make the Top 77 lol. The best part of the song is "I miss all the cool things we'd do, but what I miss the most is watching movies with you" which is not on the album or first video of the song. Bringing this all up because of the CVS heard out in the wild thread.

From our Top 77 Tracks from 2022 thread:

Very happy this made it, didn't think it had a chance of placing. Not the best song on the album that would be "True Romance" but voted for this as I thought it would have the best chance to place...

― Bee OK, Wednesday, February 22, 2023

pleasantly surprised to see Tove Lo in the top 10 given she narrowly missed the albums list. Agree with Bee OK that "True Romance" is the highlight the way that "Moments" was on her debut.

From the first post in that YouTube posting:

I made True Romance together with my roommate Tim From The House. We both had a need to write something different and dramatic. It took me three days to get the lyrics right but I recorded it in one take. The lyrics are based on the movie True Romance, destructive cinematic love at its best and worst. We shot this scene for it in one take in the desert earlier this year. Kenny Laubbacher has always captured the emotional journey of the song perfectly in this scene.

She's a lot of fun.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 6 October 2023 22:08 (one year ago)

100% would recommend, although the crowd I was part of skewed very young - it was sold out but I doubt there were more than a dozen people there under 25. She is charismatic, fun and committed on stage, with everything feeling very urgent and breathless. Also: very popular with the queer kids, so it was a joy for me in my 30s to see people half my age out expressing themselves through fashion and social moves in a way that I would never have been able to do when I was that age.

boxedjoy, Saturday, 7 October 2023 07:45 (one year ago)

Her songs are very sensual and the biggest cheer probably came from "No One Dies From Love" but could also be expected since it closed the show.

I don't know how she doesn't have whiplash from her spinning her ponytail around all night. What energy.

Very young crowd and would love to see her again in the future.
