mechanical animals

the other mechanical animals thread positions it against ok computer which nah. the apotheosis of the '90s glam revival and also maybe apocalyptic pre-millenium digital tension, from the perspective of a glossy living mannequin. also a great record.

"posthuman," incidentally

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 2 October 2014 16:46 (ten years ago)

Title track.

jmm, Thursday, 2 October 2014 16:48 (ten years ago)

Incredible record! This is sort of what i imagined Ziggy Stardust must sound like before I'd heard it. Will go for I Want To Disappear or the title track or the opener...

jamiesummerz, Thursday, 2 October 2014 16:50 (ten years ago)

What was the rest of the 90s glam revival? I wasn't paying attention at the time. Following up on this fron the My Chemical Romance thread.

how's life, Thursday, 2 October 2014 16:54 (ten years ago)

Well Spacehog for some but Suede's Coming Up can't be ignored.

THIS ALBUM, though. I ranted this back in 1999.

http://www.netcomuk.co.uk/~tewing/ned/n78.html

Florid as per usual with me. Stand by it though. Just relistened to it again last month. If I had to pick any specific song it'll always be a tie between "The Speed of Pain" and "I Want to Disappear," but ultimately, the whole damn thing.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 2 October 2014 17:00 (ten years ago)

pretty sure i couldn't have gotten away with bringing this album home in 1998

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 2 October 2014 17:31 (ten years ago)

also feel like this record shares a lot sonically and lyrically with our lady peace's spiritual machines

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 2 October 2014 17:37 (ten years ago)

could just be that manson and raine maida are similarly incompetent singers

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 2 October 2014 17:38 (ten years ago)

I didn't have a copy myself, but in high school we listened to it a lot in the darkroom, including in pitch-black while processing film negatives. I'm not sure I would enjoy this album w/o those sullen friends around.

jmm, Thursday, 2 October 2014 17:43 (ten years ago)

one of the best album covers of all time

of the mechanimals/machina/celebrity skin trifecta of corgan-addled attempts to keep up with mainstream pop excess by going super glam it might be the best but iunno how well it's aging outside of dope show

speed of pain is just warrant covering exit music for a film

james brooks, Thursday, 2 October 2014 17:49 (ten years ago)

lol "i don't like the drugs" is so "let's dance"

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 2 October 2014 17:53 (ten years ago)

speed of pain is just warrant covering exit music for a film

Why not?

And "Let's Dance"? Man that's a total "Fame" rip.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 2 October 2014 17:56 (ten years ago)

lol i knew i was thinking of the wrong bowie song

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 2 October 2014 17:57 (ten years ago)

also agree that warrant covering exit music is a welcome aesthetic

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 2 October 2014 17:57 (ten years ago)

mm's low-key radiohead fanboying was the funniest thing about this period

the topline on "lamb of god" off holy wood is a note for note rip of "climbing up the walls"

james brooks, Thursday, 2 October 2014 17:58 (ten years ago)

could just be that manson and raine maida are similarly incompetent singers

This is so mean to MM! He's a pretty good tuneful screamer. Gotta go w. "I Want to Disappear" as three-minute anthem MM is the only mode I can still deal w/ tbh

Simon H., Thursday, 2 October 2014 18:35 (ten years ago)

He's a pretty good tuneful screamer

agreed! i don't mean to be unfair, i like his narrow croak

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 2 October 2014 18:43 (ten years ago)

lol I just really hate Raine Maida/OLP

are any of the post-Holy Wood records worthy?

i disagree with almost everything i've said in this thread

Which begs the question.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 11 August 2016 15:20 (eight years ago)

yes I have heard last year's album and it rules

one year passes...

I have a weird relationship with this record: I dug "The Dope Show" after not really feeling one way or another about his/their earlier material and bought the album when it came out in 1998, loved it on first listen, and then never really cared to check out anything they did afterwards. But the real reason I'm posting in this thread in 2018 is that I just found the poll and no one voted for "The Last Day on Earth" and wtf, c'mon, that song rules

I was arguing this album's virtues the other day.

are any of the albums btwn Holy Wood and Pale Emperor worth hearing?

Simon H., Thursday, 12 December 2019 20:05 (five years ago)

i've never investigated and have no desire to

even holy wood is kinda running on fumes

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 12 December 2019 20:06 (five years ago)

omg I just realized I already asked this question on this very thread xp

Simon H., Thursday, 12 December 2019 20:06 (five years ago)

i've heard the occasional positive thing about born villain

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 12 December 2019 20:14 (five years ago)

the singles from the tim sköld era (golden age of grotesque and eat me, drink me) are bad enough that i can't imagine the albums are much better

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 12 December 2019 20:14 (five years ago)

I found a copy of EMDM in a thrift store bin yesterday but it didn't seem like a sound investment
