Mr Twin Sister

Don't know why this group decided to add the "Mr" to their name, it feels awkward to me, but then I never paid attention to them before really so whatever the fuck.

Brad and Deej hipped me to their new album and first under this moniker, and they were so so right, brad says "smoke weed listen to sade" and deej says "maurice fulton" and I say not much cos I keep listening to this instead. But it does make me imagine an album built around the aesthetic that A Mountain of One explored shamefully only once on their cover of "Can't Be Serious" with Martina Topley Bird. Anyway I'm totally obsessed with it and so should you be.

I think this should appeal to my balearic crew, to my sade crew, to my dixon crew, all crews welcome in fact.

I want an extended version of "Out of the Dark". I suppose I could always mess around with freeware audio editors again.

TTAGGGTTAGGG (Sanpaku), Friday, 3 October 2014 21:23 (ten years ago)

The most implausible part of the Veronica Mars movie was that Twin Sister's "All Around and Away We Go" was presented as a hit for a Katy Perry-like pop star.

jaymc, Friday, 3 October 2014 21:45 (ten years ago)

I'd seen this name on places like Pitchfork, but I had no idea Twin Sister had added "Mr" to the name. I just thought it was someone different.

This sounds totally unlike what they sounded like 3-4 years ago.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 3 October 2014 21:49 (ten years ago)

I think that's the reason for the change but i still don't like it, it feels like they had a messy car crash with Mr Mr.

Tim F, Friday, 3 October 2014 21:51 (ten years ago)

THE MUSIC IS GREAT THOUGH.

Tim F, Friday, 3 October 2014 21:52 (ten years ago)

Listening to the album now. I'm on board.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 3 October 2014 21:53 (ten years ago)

Legal threats from another Twin Sister, “the self-proclaimed greatest Star Wars funk band,” who performed in full costume.

TTAGGGTTAGGG (Sanpaku), Friday, 3 October 2014 22:03 (ten years ago)

Out of the Dark is a bop. Wish it didn't end so abruptly.

I think their first album is underrated.

uxorious gazumping (monotony), Friday, 3 October 2014 22:08 (ten years ago)

i also wish "out of the dark" were longer and i maybe wish "twelve angels" were shorter

best side one i've heard all year though

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Friday, 3 October 2014 23:19 (ten years ago)

i love this album. some of it sounds like bjork doing linda difranco and sade covers.

max, Sunday, 5 October 2014 12:11 (ten years ago)

This album is really something. Balearic/Dixon/Sade is so right, I can't believe nobody tried it before.

dow, Monday, 20 October 2014 00:22 (ten years ago)

2011 alb very good too so damn confident but no time for smug "Beep beep."

dow, Monday, 20 October 2014 00:56 (ten years ago)

Loved their EPs in 2009-10 - think "All Around And Away We Go" was my favourite track by anyone that year - then found their first LP in 2011 to be a huge let-down, just a few highlights and "Saturday Sunday" was just terrible. Will try to check out their new stuff with an open mind.

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 2 December 2014 01:45 (ten years ago)

So good. One of my late discoveries (Thanks to Johnny Fever for having it in his albums of the year list) but already very high on my own list.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 01:49 (ten years ago)

first four tracks completely devastate me at this point

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 2 December 2014 01:54 (ten years ago)

Yeah the first half is just gorgeous. The second half seems so unexpected after those songs but it somehow it really works as a whole album.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 01:58 (ten years ago)

i like everything on it

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 2 December 2014 02:03 (ten years ago)

This LP is now my favourite this year, not a weak spot on it, glad they've stopped trying to be an indie band and embraced this strung-out 5am post-disco thing, her voice deserves it.

Camaraderie at Arms Length, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 03:23 (ten years ago)

i found this album very pleasant to listen to and every time it has gone straight in one ear and out the other

lex pretend, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 09:29 (ten years ago)

Tim F, Thursday, 29 January 2015 22:57 (ten years ago)

Pretty sure I overlooked this on the basis of the terrible name too.

The Reverend, Thursday, 29 January 2015 23:02 (ten years ago)

nearly overlooked it on the basis of 1) their name 2) the previous associations i had re: their sound 3) who was writing about them

thankfully a friend whose taste i really trust recommended it to me

I never actually saw anyone talking about or recommending them, just the name!

The Reverend, Thursday, 29 January 2015 23:11 (ten years ago)

i love this record so much and it really should've been no. 1 on my ballot

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 29 January 2015 23:13 (ten years ago)

it has this really wonderful dual quality of being smoky and precise, dreamy and present

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 29 January 2015 23:15 (ten years ago)

yeah it's one of the best things to happen ever. still remember the feeling hearing 'in the house of yes' for the first time, when the disco strings came in.

not too in to the silent-shout-style tracks on the back half of this record, but overall its def my favorite discovery from the EOY top 77 polls.

max already invoked bjork, which is what i hear the most-- specifically the lush floral stuff from "Post"

I was there too - didn't mind the venue that much. small but

Qamon (||||||||), Friday, 19 November 2021 21:24 (three years ago)

wish I had known, I'd have bought you a pint! I spent 9/10ths of the set unable to see anything, the choice to have a "stage" that's barely an inch higher than the crowd space means a 5ft5 wisp like me either needs to be down the front or resign themselves to the view of the back of somebody's head.

boxedjoy, Friday, 19 November 2021 21:29 (three years ago)

Mr Twin Sister at The David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center, NYC
Free to enter until at capacity, Arrive at least 1/2 hour early for your best chance to get in!
Seating and entry are first-come, first-served; the line will form at the Atrium’s entrance on Broadway, between 62nd and 63rd Street.

Brooklyn-based indie pop band Mr Twin Sister have headlined sets at Elsewhere, Warsaw, and Bowery Ballroom. The group's Lincoln Center debut reimagines the space as an exclusive rock club, minus the cover. Mr Twin Sister's early EPs announced the band's signature brand of musically omnivorous dreamy disco, but they first gained international recognition when Kendrick Lamar sampled their single "Meet the Frownies" for his breakout hit "The Recipe." Four albums later, the quartet has established themselves as among the scene's most respected and influential institutions. Pitchfork said Mr Twin Sister's latest release, 2022's Upright and Even, "exists to be danced to... each song is self aware, mature and sexy." Bring a partner or find one at the Atrium for a night of ecstasy.

They are truly a national treasure and anything new or archival is great to have. I last saw them in Seattle in maybe 2017 and they were unreal. My completely unfounded guess it that Andrea’s MS battle limits their band functions.
