Five classics on my list imo. I'm stuck b/w Shanice and Mint Condition atm.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 7 October 2014 14:26 (ten years ago)

Shanice, no doubt. I think about and/or listen to that song a lot. One of the best singles of the '90s IMO.

That list is fairly evenly weighted with good stuff and tcrap. And I'm realizing that, for some reason, I thought that Atlantic Starr song was from the mid-'80s. Certainly sounds as if it is.

Certified Genious (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 7 October 2014 14:34 (ten years ago)

Genesis' last top ten btw.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 7 October 2014 14:36 (ten years ago)

I Love Your Smile vs. Remember the Time

Eric H., Tuesday, 7 October 2014 14:44 (ten years ago)

Right Said Fred dude is 61 now.

Eric H., Tuesday, 7 October 2014 14:44 (ten years ago)

Fuck this, are you kidding me? It's Save the Best for Last. 1992 decided for you. Listen to the wisdom of your elders.

how's life, Tuesday, 7 October 2014 14:46 (ten years ago)

for me "Save the Best For Last" is the ne plus ultra of modern a/c ballads.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 7 October 2014 14:48 (ten years ago)

Blow, Branford, blow.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Tuesday, 7 October 2014 14:49 (ten years ago)

"Remember the Time" : the whole thing swings (and just about slams) but the last bit, do you remember, on the phone, you and me, till dawn, two or three, do you, do you, do you

& then he scats!

do you, do you?

droit au butt (Euler), Tuesday, 7 October 2014 15:43 (ten years ago)

9 I Can't Dance - Genesis

lol

💪😈⚠️ (DJP), Tuesday, 7 October 2014 15:45 (ten years ago)

i hate every single song on this list other than save the best for last, which i love. so this is pretty easy.

Ass Tchotchke! (jjjusten), Tuesday, 7 October 2014 15:48 (ten years ago)

actually i dont hate the right said fred track, astonishingly, so that gets second place i guess

Ass Tchotchke! (jjjusten), Tuesday, 7 October 2014 15:49 (ten years ago)

you hate "I Love Your Smile"???

💪😈⚠️ (DJP), Tuesday, 7 October 2014 15:58 (ten years ago)

ohhhhhhh yes

Ass Tchotchke! (jjjusten), Tuesday, 7 October 2014 15:59 (ten years ago)

unless in reviewing it i just found some weird cover on youtube and thought it was the original

Ass Tchotchke! (jjjusten), Tuesday, 7 October 2014 15:59 (ten years ago)

Surely this has to be Shanice by a massive margin?

Willl, Tuesday, 7 October 2014 16:07 (ten years ago)

jjjusten, hang tight: I sent the wolves after you.

Third or fourth Radio On, remember the time well. 1. "I'm Too Sexy," 2. "Remember the Time," 3. "Save the Best for Last."

Man, what prompted Phil Collins to jump directly into the dad rock toilet with such glee and abandon?

Certified Genious (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 7 October 2014 16:35 (ten years ago)

was thinking recently about how the bracketing of "i'm too sexy" with "i'm too sexy for my love, love's going to leave me" sets the whole thing up as a mea culpa for philandering

da croupier, Tuesday, 7 October 2014 16:36 (ten years ago)

"i love your smile" is the song that made me realise i loved music

like, i'd hear it on the radio but i didn't know the means by which it got on the radio, and i definitely didn't know one could actually buy it in a shop, so i would sit by the radio with literally only one thing in mind, the hope of randomly hearing it again

"save the best for last" is so so good as well

lex pretend, Tuesday, 7 October 2014 16:39 (ten years ago)

also that little anecdote is not a fond remembrance of the radio by any means, it is an anecdote of frustration and confusion and sitting through so much bad music for this song. FUCK THE RADIO we live in a glorious age when the song we want is at our fingertips :)

lex pretend, Tuesday, 7 October 2014 16:40 (ten years ago)

"I Can't Dance" is a pustule. This is the Phil Collins people remember when they think his NJR stuff sucked

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 7 October 2014 16:46 (ten years ago)

"Save the Best for Last" love mystifies me. Love mystifies me too, tho, so.

Eric H., Tuesday, 7 October 2014 16:51 (ten years ago)

There's tension between Williams' wide-eyed everywoman delivery, wistful music, and occasionally sharp lyrics.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 7 October 2014 16:55 (ten years ago)

"i love your smile" vs. "good for me"

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 7 October 2014 17:58 (ten years ago)

i have a lot of goodwill for the we can't dance singles though

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 7 October 2014 17:59 (ten years ago)

oh i missed that "breakin' my heart" is at the end of the list

those drums

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 7 October 2014 18:00 (ten years ago)

xpost That's very charitable of you. I can almost choke down the schmaltz enough to give "Hold On My Heart" a pass, but the rest is hot garbage.

Certified Genious (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 7 October 2014 18:01 (ten years ago)

'round these parts "Hold On My Heart" soundtracked my first summer job. It got tons of airplay, more than its chart position suggests. Then it went into recurrent play for another 183 years.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 7 October 2014 18:03 (ten years ago)

i remember "hold on my heart" being on ac radio all the time but i was young enough that my enjoyment for it is basically v v gauzy nostalgia. i don't really have positive or negative feelings about "i can't dance."

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 7 October 2014 18:07 (ten years ago)

Yeah, I feel completely indefensible nostalgia for any number of demonstrably horrible songs from my yoot.

Certified Genious (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 7 October 2014 18:16 (ten years ago)

how is it possible to have anything but negative feelings about "I Can't Dance", it is literally one of the worst songs ever recorded

💪😈⚠️ (DJP), Tuesday, 7 October 2014 18:33 (ten years ago)

never figured it out

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 7 October 2014 18:34 (ten years ago)

the way Collins pronounces "I" as AHHHHHHH is akin to hearing bombs falling on a village.

TS: singles from We Can't Dance vs. videos of the singles from We Can't Dance. I think the latter might somehow actually be worse, if recollection serves.

at first i was gonna scoff at the idea of We Can't Dance as a New Jersey just cuz he didn't make a follow-up with them, but if you combine Phil's solo albums with the pop genesis albums, yeah it works

da croupier, Saturday, 11 October 2014 00:03 (ten years ago)

we actually used But Seriously on the poll, as it's phil's new jersey if you keep the two discographies separate

da croupier, Saturday, 11 October 2014 00:09 (ten years ago)

MJ over Mint Condition and Right Said Fred. His best post-Thriller single. "I Love Your Smile" always seems to get a lot of love around here but it has one of the most primally annoying hooks I've ever heard.

goon kabuki (The Reverend), Saturday, 11 October 2014 00:22 (ten years ago)

yeah I mean this Phil/Genesis period defines New Jersey, right? No critical acclaim at all, just singles coasting on the past and a pre-Soundscan way of doing things.

New Jersey-era Bon Jovi are about 1/10th as memorable as late 80s Phil

Master of Treacle, Saturday, 11 October 2014 01:25 (ten years ago)

Save The Best For Last is exactly how great early 90s ballads should sound. And its one of the best of the era.

Amy Grant is how Vanessa Williams should sound.
