I have never heard Mike Rutherford tear it up like that on any other song, by Genesis, in which he did play some tough shit (although he is easily the weak link virtuosically-speaking in the 70s or 80s) or heaven knows Mike & the Mechanics, in which I believe he limited himself to shitty solos and timid rhythm guitar via the steinberger that he and other 40something boffins liked.
you know who that swinging, really really demanding part sounds like to me? Percy Jones…the part is played on a fretless, and Jones played with phil in Brand x…Genesis are clearly "no we play on everything we do" dead enders, but…it does not sound a thing like anything he ever done before…unless someone would like to set me stright…

It is a great, great part. My favorite thing is, before the bridge, after that initial run up the neck, that quick little five-semiquaver riff before the second half of the phrase.
