I'm hoping to compile a CD of cool christmas tunes. Any ideas?
I'm thinking along the lines of Pogues/MacColl, Greg Lake, Beach Boys Little St Nick, Sinead O'Connor Silent Night. Not exactly ground breaking up to now, so any help will be gratefully received.

there's xfm's "it's a cool cool xmas" compilation, which has some good moments: saint etienne, webb bros, b&s, grandaddy (alan parsons in a winter wonderland! what a great title!), the flaming lips (ace), elvez... er, and the dandy warhols...

There's that whole mind-blowing Phil Spector christmas disc. I scored mine with his box set, but I'm assuming it's available by itself.

Also, Salsoul released a Christmas album which I'm curious about.

And that Belle & Sebastien version of "O Come O Come Emmanuel" is creepy/awesome.

The Kinks' "Father Christmas" is my favorite. Also: Elvis' Blue Christmas, the Ramones "Merry Christmas (I Don't Wanna Fight)" Pretenders "2000 Miles" and motherfuckin' BAND AID!!!! Whoo!

My fave is a Columbia Records jazz compilation called Jingle Bell Jazz, which includes the super cool Blue Xmas by Miles Davis & Bob Dorough.

dek1, Tuesday, 22 October 2002 19:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Beck's version of Little Drummer Boy is completely and totally kick-ass. Also, one would do well to seek out Christmas with the Three Suns, possibly my favorite xmas record of all time.

Adam Bruneau, Tuesday, 22 October 2002 22:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Santa's Got a Brand New Bag - Gary Walker & the Boogie Kings (if only for the lines "he's oh so fat/but his beard is clean")

The two Christmas Cocktails compilations in the Ultra Lounge series have had me purring over my egg nog for a couple of cool yules.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 07:22 (twenty-three years ago)

the greatest/worst xmas record
of all time is 'santa claus is coming to town'
by joseph spence (as played by danny baker every
year at xmas in the old radio 1 days).
he's a bahamian blues singer, and
it literally has to be heard to be believed, while
all the time bearing in mind that is not *intended* as a joke.

can be found on 'a caribbean christmas'.

piscesboy, Wednesday, 23 October 2002 17:54 (twenty-three years ago)
