EP "Mr Noah" out now, sounds great, so much fuller than Tomboy and more put together than person pitch...

ET sippin the wig (spazzmatazz), Thursday, 23 October 2014 05:28 (eleven years ago)

I kept waiting for the song to blow up into some other part for a nice contrasting resolve. It never did. Fuck you, Panda Bear.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 23 October 2014 05:32 (eleven years ago)

the whole EP is pretty good imo!

ET sippin the wig (spazzmatazz), Thursday, 23 October 2014 05:33 (eleven years ago)

the video made me appreciate it a lot more, and it's growing with each listen

ET sippin the wig (spazzmatazz), Thursday, 23 October 2014 05:34 (eleven years ago)

mr noah ep is mars music

Raccoon Tanuki, Thursday, 23 October 2014 17:22 (eleven years ago)

Like those ep/album covers.

It sounds like a mess so far but he usually sounds like that at first listens.

Moka, Thursday, 23 October 2014 18:14 (eleven years ago)

There's this too:

The Mr. Noah video makes me appreciate the song more.

"This Side of Paradise" is something else.

Pentenema Karten, Thursday, 23 October 2014 21:55 (eleven years ago)

I have listened to "Mr Noah" way way too many times today. Always seems to end too quickly. I don't think I've ever gotten this hooked on one of his solo songs.

RAP GAME SHANI DAVIS (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 24 October 2014 01:53 (eleven years ago)

there's something raggaish about this

nauru, Friday, 24 October 2014 19:24 (eleven years ago)

The title sounds like the name of the worst rap battle ever.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Saturday, 25 October 2014 04:29 (eleven years ago)

He's a heavy hip hop fan so it's probable he did that on purpose.

Moka, Saturday, 25 October 2014 09:58 (eleven years ago)

According to the pitchfork interview it's more inspired by reggae records like King Tubby meets
Rockers Uptown

mizzell, Saturday, 25 October 2014 11:59 (eleven years ago)

kinda reggae dub sorta beat

sweet lids of the stars (seandalai), Saturday, 25 October 2014 17:54 (eleven years ago)

I was thinking this record specifically:

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZWCpXaiP664/TZ9USQUNYPI/AAAAAAAAAaM/-YbCXrWcJhU/s1600/scientist_rids_the_world_cover.jpg

You guys are caterpillar (Telephone thing), Sunday, 26 October 2014 02:45 (eleven years ago)

yeah dub records also came to mind

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Sunday, 26 October 2014 02:59 (eleven years ago)

Listening to the Mr. Noah EP now, this is actually cool as fuck

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Sunday, 26 October 2014 03:03 (eleven years ago)

oh that scientist LP is so great, I have that on the wall in my office

appropriate LP for halloween time too

I dunno. (amateurist), Sunday, 26 October 2014 05:21 (eleven years ago)

Even more specifical:

uhh so the new panda bear record leaked...

j. winters (josh), Sunday, 23 November 2014 22:06 (eleven years ago)

On first listen it's giving me a headache - ridiculously dense - but it might actually be very good.

Tim F, Monday, 24 November 2014 20:36 (eleven years ago)

I was really hoping based on the title that this would have a ton of Gravediggaz samples

the farakhan of gg (DJP), Monday, 24 November 2014 20:48 (eleven years ago)

this sounds so good

schlump, Monday, 24 November 2014 22:19 (eleven years ago)

it leaked, but it's already out? i saw it in the store today.

I dunno. (amateurist), Monday, 24 November 2014 22:56 (eleven years ago)

oh wait, i'm totally thinking of a different record. my bad. nothing to see here.

I was hoping it would be filled with samples of this sort of stuff.

MarkoP, Monday, 24 November 2014 22:59 (eleven years ago)

the animal collective message board is insane right now. i can't believe people have the gall to complain about differences between live versions and the record, and even worse, to say "hey! if you're reading this panda, no complaints :) "

like oh thanks dude i'm glad i passed the inspection, gonna go smoke a fatty on my balcony in portugal

ET sippin the wig (spazzmatazz), Monday, 24 November 2014 23:56 (eleven years ago)

I have stopped in on that board various times over the years looking for infos and updates, etc. (especially recordings of new stuff that is being toured before the record comes out...) and the tenor of it is hilarious. I mean I guess every band has their cult but AC just seem like chilled out bros and their hardcore fans are the most painstaking, humorless people in the world.

Badmotorfinger Debate Club (MFB), Monday, 24 November 2014 23:59 (eleven years ago)

i was on that board pretty frequently from 2005 to 2009, and in the years after MPP, the fan base completely changed - sooooooooooo many "chilled out bros" that are oddly humorless. the fans became way more invasive too after MPP blew up, as is expected i guess, but the coolest thing about that board was that the band actually posted on it regularly until 2008 or so when people started getting creepy. it's a shame because you could go on and ask about some super obscure b-side or radio session like breezeblock or the pumpkin trilogy and avey/geo/deakin/sometimes pandy would write long responses and share lots of info. it was really cool, but i guess that kind of thing can't be sustained once you reach a certain level and people are trying to figure out where your wedding is, or what your kids look like :\

ET sippin the wig (spazzmatazz), Tuesday, 25 November 2014 00:14 (eleven years ago)

i also have to keep reminding myself that lots of the posters on there rn are probably teenagers. lots of them are complaining about the record missing the intros/build-ups that he played live. i was confused because the AC pretty much always does that, especially on strawberry jam. like when i first heard the studio version of "chores" - then i remembered that a lot of these people don't remember SJ leaking three songs at a time over the summer of 2007. oi

ET sippin the wig (spazzmatazz), Tuesday, 25 November 2014 00:18 (eleven years ago)

AC is one of those bands i saw fairly early in their career and would have not guessed in a million years they would become as popular as they have

I dunno. (amateurist), Tuesday, 25 November 2014 00:26 (eleven years ago)

i don't read the zeitgeist too well, i guess

I dunno. (amateurist), Tuesday, 25 November 2014 00:26 (eleven years ago)

great melodies, as oppose to Tomboy.
back to Person Pitch heyday sort of , with smoother production

nostormo, Tuesday, 25 November 2014 00:31 (eleven years ago)

(but i think he will have to reinvent himself in the future in order to remain interesting)

when did you see them amateurist? i got feels the summer before it came out and it felt like how people describe seeing the Beatles on ed sullivan, hearing smells like teen spirit for the first time, etc. i'm not surprised they became so popular and influential, i'm surprised they're not bigger

a song called 'selfish gene'? aw panda bb c'mon.

yeah the third record is the EP that came out last month, i think they're packaged together though

ET sippin the wig (spazzmatazz), Tuesday, 25 November 2014 01:48 (eleven years ago)

nice! i haven't heard the EP yet. *orders*

Sorry, I'm sick and my head hurts and I can't sleep.

I love the first three tracks of the LP. His vocals sound great and are in the forefront, where they should be, and there's attention paid to the drums, which I appreciate.

calstars, Saturday, 3 January 2015 01:47 (eleven years ago)

It's a great record.
It just need some time to digest.
You shall see.
Of course it's not as classic as PP but still pretty awesome.

Come To Your Senses is the best track here, but it took me some time to figure it out.
other highlights: Selfish Gene and Butcher Baker.

the weakest track is Pricipe Real imo.

Chantilly Bass, Thursday, 15 January 2015 02:56 (eleven years ago)

I keep waiting for him to do something different with his vocals. I loved him in earlier days Animal Collective, but now I find his voice to be intolerable.

Benjamin-, Monday, 19 January 2015 07:56 (eleven years ago)

To be fair, I've only listened to this through my computer speakers which sounds terrible.

I really like Crosswords

What a tune

afriendlypioneer, Monday, 19 January 2015 16:21 (eleven years ago)

This album is fucking rad. I never got into Tomboy -- would benefit from spending more time with it probably -- but this one, yes. Don't find it to be a "grower." The repetitiveness is so hypnotizing on first listen.

Jennifer 8.-( (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 3 February 2015 14:30 (eleven years ago)

It just occured to me like how much of a staple the really reverby vocals are, like of course it's one of his signature trademarks but I guess I'd just never thought through "oh wow he ALWAYS does this to his vocals and it would sound so radically different and weird and un-PB if he just sang normally w/o effects"

Jennifer 8.-( (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 3 February 2015 14:31 (eleven years ago)

did he sing without effects on Young Prayer? it's been a long while since I listened to it but it seemed to be a more stripped down recording

no love deb weep (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 17 February 2015 17:00 (eleven years ago)

To me the production is a huge disappointment, I have no idea what's happened to him in that sense. I'd never thought he could do production as uninteresting, plodding, lazy as this. droney over never changing tired drum loops, it's like he found a 4/4 beat, just looped it for the entire track, and sung over.. nothing really stuck in my head melodically. sounds like it should be more upbeat and uptempo but just isn't.

sequential circuits - tomboy outtake?

mr noah - tired of it after a few listen, horrible mixing on the dull drums

crossroads - plodding, but fairly good vocals

boys latin - initially interesting quickly tiresome and plodding bad mixing

come to your senses - album starts feeling repetitive at this point, nothing happening with production

tropic of cancer - deeply emotional, him at his very best.

lonely wanderer - eh. introspective feelings but doesn't stick with me.

principe real - this track couldve hit much harder and bouncier but seems weighed down by something. plodding again. needs help on his production.

selfish gene - arpeggiooooooooooo. first part of a fantastic end to a mediocre album. great phrasing and enunciation on his vocals and his vocals melody and lyrics finally really carry this track beyond it's uninspired production

acid wash - probably my favourite track. finally the tempo is right, production is great mirrors the maritime ctuhulu feel in the lyrics

6.5/10

Tomboy did the chanting lyrics far better with more solid and interesting production, PP did lively, energised vocals better.
