have you heard Art Blakey's "Moanin", crüt? I'm pretty sure that's the origin of the bass riff and the horn riff.

Moanin' is IV-I or the 'amen cadence' common to gospel. I've always wondered was Davis making a sacrilegious joke - it's a call and response gospel structure, but instead of answering the bass with 'amen' the piano answers with 'so what' and the second chord (the 'what') hangs in the air instead of resolving nicely back to I.

Richard Wright out of Pink Floyd used to say that "Time" off of Dark Side of the Moon was based on "So What". Can't hear it myself.

one of the things i love about So What is the very beginning where the bass rumbles around for a bit and the piano responds and it's so tentative and drifty before the real riff comes in.
