we had an election here last night in America, so to keep with that theme. how the hell did John Kennedy only win by less than 200,000 votes over Dick Nixon?

Tough call between "Giant Steps", "Back Door Man", "Spoonful", "Walking to New Orleans", "Shop Around" and "Wonderful World". "Spoonful" by a hair.

Impossible, but I've narrowed it down to Coltrane or the Shirelles.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 6 November 2014 03:12 (ten years ago)

And it's widely believed/know that Kennedy stole the election. The Daley/Chicago Democratic machine employed a number of shady/illegal/fraudulent tactics enduring Kennedy's victory, and giving birth to the Chicago saying, "Vote early, and vote often."

"Spanish Harlem" vs. "Chain Gang"

impossible to choose one

could have gone with Orbison, Brenda Lee, Fats, or Howlin' Wolf, but I have a soft spot for "At Last"

"Shakin' All Over" was a regular feature of early R.E.M. shows

Brad C., Thursday, 6 November 2014 17:08 (ten years ago)

Got to be Etta James - At Last

It's all Dad could pay for.

(tbf, Republicans likely stole votes in other locations)

Interesting that "Giant Steps" makes the list. Had no idea if Coltrane had any pop presence.

The Shirelles - Will You Love Me Tomorrow

did not know any of the Kennedy or Democratic stuff, 1960 was before my time. it just seems that Kennedy was so loved that i was surprised that it was that close.

From the list, probably "Walking to New Orleans" (the one Fats Domino song I really, really like), then "The Twist" and "Walk--Don't Run." My actual favorites from '60: Donnie Brooks' "Mission Bell," Celia Cruz's "Caramelos," the Everlys' "When Will I Be Loved," Bobby Bland's "Hold Me Tenderly," and Ray Bryant's "Madison Time."

Wow that list.

I don't care if it isn't the best; I'm voting to create a disturbance in your mind.

Back Door Man

Pict in a blanket (WilliamC), Sunday, 9 November 2014 01:36 (ten years ago)

re: the 1960 election- nixon was coming to the election after eight years as vice president to the universally beloved eisenhower, one of the only presidents to serve two full terms and leave office nearly as popular as he was when he started- closest comparison here is something like george bush in '88. in contrast, kennedy didn't actually become universally beloved until after he was killed, which didn't help him win any elections. also, he was catholic, and significant anti-catholic prejudice still existed in the states- people worried that electing a catholic meant that the pope would run america.

and "back door man" for me.
