It's no one else's favorite but "Rattlesnake" is my top jam from this

Belami Young (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 11 November 2014 12:19 (ten years ago)

That seemed to be the one that got the most attention when the album first came out. Sounds more like 'Strange Mercy' material to me, but I really like the idea of it as a narrative poem set to music.

Really I could vote for any of tracks 2-6 and be happy.

The first 20 seconds of Rattlesnake are my jam
Not being an asshole, that is a great way to start a record.

Prince Johnny

Huey Newton and Digital Witness are an amazing 1-2 punch. Can I vote for both?

Psychopath is underrated too.

It used to be Birth in Reverse, then Prince Johnny, then I Prefer Your Love and currently Digital Witness.

"Bring Me Your Loves" with "Digital Witness" as a close second.

Birth in Reverse because when I saw her live I involuntarily whooped at the end of it.

I Prefer Your Love is probably my song of the year. It was my favourite when I first heard the album and then reading it was written when her mum was seriously ill just made it even more touching. It gets to me in the same way that Being Boring, This Woman's Work and Oh Father all do.

The whole album is brilliant and close to overtaking Actor as my favourite of hers.

Think I voted for Prince Johnny. That spirally chorus gets me every time.

joni mitchell jarre (dog latin), Thursday, 13 November 2014 09:57 (ten years ago)

i really liked the interview i read (can't remember where?) where she said the chorus was loosely modelled on James Brown's 'Hot Pants'. Goes to show where inspiration can come from and a seemingly simple idea can come from a fair amount of inspiration/perspiration.

"regret" deserved a vote

uxorious gazumping (monotony), Thursday, 20 November 2014 01:43 (ten years ago)

Forgot to vote in this. Probably would have picked birth in reverse or digital witnesses. I'm surprised how much this album has grown on me. I think it's her best so far.
