Certain type of listener then.

So, despite the idea that vinyl is mostly for trendsetting hipsters, looks like the people who buy the most are still old rock geezers?

Tuomas, Thursday, 27 November 2014 10:41 (ten years ago) link

So, despite the idea that vinyl is mostly for trendsetting hipsters,

Picture your stereotyped hipster, and answer the following 3 questions

1. Do they have a turntable(s)?
2. Do they have records

here is the important one

3. How many records do they have?

saer, Thursday, 27 November 2014 10:52 (ten years ago) link

Number 1 is the important one. If no, go to end.

Mark G, Thursday, 27 November 2014 11:11 (ten years ago) link

well either way, i just never heard the idea that vinyl is mainly for hipsters. for house/techno people sure, but this chart isnt about 1 person buying 200 records anyway, its about 200 people buying 1 record

saer, Thursday, 27 November 2014 11:20 (ten years ago) link

Um, that's all charts.

Anyway:

I'm not even sure about house/techno people anyhow, first time we went to Ibiza, the place had loads of vinyl shops of that ilk, this would be around 1992 or so. We went as a family last and this year (A&A got lots of boat party invites even though they were 15/13 and 16/14 each year, thanks to being 5ft9 each), ahem.. Anyway, the only place you could get any vinyl at all was the market stalls where they'd take two records, but some fabric around them, join them together and sell it as a handbag.

Mark G, Thursday, 27 November 2014 11:52 (ten years ago) link

exactly, wondered why Tuomas thought different

saer, Thursday, 27 November 2014 12:36 (ten years ago) link

I'm not even sure about house/techno people anyhow,

well i am sure! we buy a lot of records!

saer, Thursday, 27 November 2014 12:39 (ten years ago) link

Fair enough.

Mark G, Thursday, 27 November 2014 12:39 (ten years ago) link

Well, because here in Finland at least vinyl has this reputation of being a more specialist product than CD, favoured by people who like more obscure things, so it was interesting to learn that the chart toppers in vinyl sales are the same ol' mainstream rock shit as in CD sales.

Tuomas, Thursday, 27 November 2014 12:41 (ten years ago) link

Well, Tuomas does have a point in a way, but then if the chart was about a short term (i.e. a week), then the Aphex album would have been number one for one chart.

A bit like how in the year of Punk, the end-of-year sales chart was all about the Lena Martel and so forth.

xpost, leaving it in anyway

Mark G, Thursday, 27 November 2014 12:42 (ten years ago) link

Though admittedly the hipper hipsters in here have already moved from vinyl to cassettes a while ago.

DJing for friends' parties recently, I've noticed that the rise in vinyl sales has had no impact on the number of venues that bother to have turntables. For years it felt like vinyl was being kept alive by DJs and now it's classic-rock fans who want beautiful artefacts to play at home. I'm sure dance fans still buy a fair bit of vinyl but that doesn't seem to be behind the resurgence.

Re-Make/Re-Model, Thursday, 27 November 2014 12:57 (ten years ago) link

but thats because London venues are terrible, across the board, its not easy to find spaces to play

the chart toppers in vinyl sales are the same ol' mainstream rock shit

chart toppers cannot be obscure, its kind of a contradiction. If i buy 1 copy of 1500 records it makes no impact on any chart

saer, Thursday, 27 November 2014 13:16 (ten years ago) link

I didn't say they were totally obscure, I just said I had thought they'd more obscure than the chart toppers in CD sales (since vinyl has the reputation for being a specialist product, not something for "common people"), but that doesn't seem to be case.

Tuomas, Thursday, 27 November 2014 13:38 (ten years ago) link

Technics stopped production of turntables 4 years ago, while most venues switched to Pioneer CDJ a long time before that. decent well-maintained turntables don't/can't really exist anymore in your big/ mid-level venues. you see them here and there in smaller bars, pubs etc. the surge in dj controllers/ Serato/ CDJ etc is why no-one really bothers with vinyl in the dance world. glad to see the back of vinyl to be honest.

piscesx, Thursday, 27 November 2014 13:47 (ten years ago) link

I thought it was down to all that humping crates of vinyl to DJ sets. Sometimes, the DJs themselves used to do it you know...

Mark G, Thursday, 27 November 2014 14:09 (ten years ago) link

why no-one really bothers with vinyl in the dance world.

Definitely not my experience, cant think of many good DJs that dont play vinyl (not to get into that argument - just cant think of last time i was out at somewhere vinyl wasnt being played!)

saer, Thursday, 27 November 2014 16:42 (ten years ago) link

yeah the "death of vinyl" in dj land is not really true i think, it's a lot more mixed and fragmented by scene. technics clones are pretty good atm including pioneer's own.

6. The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses

Can't quite account for this one. Was it reissued this year or something (like DM was)?

MaudAddam (cryptosicko), Thursday, 27 November 2014 23:17 (ten years ago) link

Death of dance vinyl or not has a lot to do with genre. I go clubbing all the time and haven't seen a DJ use (non-serato) vinyl in years except for when I occasionally go to soul night.

The local Barnes and Noble has vinyl now. Those are the kind of records they stock.
