cheers as always to seandalai for doing the important stuff!

As always lurkers votes are welcome. Get your friends to vote too. Please everyone vote.

There is a Spotify playlist for you all to subscribe to which needs someone to look after it so please could you all add anything that is missing.

There will not be any blurbs this year unless someone volunteers to write them. It's time consuming as it is for me so please volunteer to help if you can.

As always please campaign on this thread. Albums that are campaigned for always do better than ones that dont. So please posts your thoughts or any good reviews you know of. The best things about these polls is the discussion.

Also do not post embedded youtube links. Please start a thread for that.

Remember VOTING ENDS FRIDAY December 12th 11.59pm UK time/6.59pm EST The rollout will probably start soon after as usual and will finish by the following thursday or friday.
I think it's a better time of year for voting as last year a lot said they were too burnt out on polls to vote so hopefully more will be inclined to take part. Also there will be time for everyone to listen to and digest the results before the general ILM poll in January.
Thanks to everyone for nominating.

Please post here when you vote so we can check it went through.
Happy voting!

Lets see who can be firsties

Cosmic Slop, Saturday, 6 December 2014 00:07 (ten years ago)

Three ballots so far, there are six albums that appear on all of them.

I think we're doing #1 gets 50 points #2 gets 39 #3 gets 38 and so on but that may change if seandalai thinks it should.

At the moment it's 50 points for #1, 49 points for #2, 48 points for #3 and so on down to 3 points for #48, 2 points for #49, 1 point for #50. I can add a 10-point bonus for first-place votes if people think that would be more fun.

death in Skegness (seandalai), Saturday, 6 December 2014 00:40 (ten years ago)

three? awesome. Im off to bed but will start on mine tomorrow.
I think a 10 point bonus for 1st place would be good. makes the #1 really count

Cosmic Slop, Saturday, 6 December 2014 00:41 (ten years ago)

voted.

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 6 December 2014 00:52 (ten years ago)

I knew you would be first as always! thanks!

Cosmic Slop, Saturday, 6 December 2014 00:57 (ten years ago)

I already had a top 40. Easy to plug in another 10.

Also, check out Comet Control. Gorgeous heavy psych:

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 6 December 2014 00:59 (ten years ago)

I voted. I didn't rank them, though, they're just in the same order from the nomination spreadsheet. In previous years we've had a ranked/unranked option...

glenn mcdonald, Saturday, 6 December 2014 01:21 (ten years ago)

glenn, I just added an unweighted option especially for you :)

death in Skegness (seandalai), Saturday, 6 December 2014 01:31 (ten years ago)

People who have already voted don't need to go back - I've assumed that everyone except glenn submitted a ranked ballot.

death in Skegness (seandalai), Saturday, 6 December 2014 01:32 (ten years ago)

Nice, thanks!

glenn mcdonald, Saturday, 6 December 2014 02:03 (ten years ago)

I got a list in, but I really felt like I didnt get to digging too deep like I had in previous years.. Like I didnt feel like I had a shit ton to pull from.. I've had other things going on I guess.

SeanWayne, Saturday, 6 December 2014 06:05 (ten years ago)

cheers guys. I need to work on mine. Dunno how some of you get them in so quick but much appreciated!

Cosmic Slop, Saturday, 6 December 2014 09:58 (ten years ago)

Man, I am loving the Comet Control.

aenaon genesis aevangelist (Drugs A. Money), Saturday, 6 December 2014 10:07 (ten years ago)

I just voted

Cosmic Slop, Saturday, 6 December 2014 11:57 (ten years ago)

I've not heard the Old Man Gloom albums yet as i am getting them for xmas. How are they? I did hear the hoax leak. Apparently the 2nd one is a bit more experimental than the crushing first?

now that dead congregation is sinking in, i'm wondering if i have enough time to really dig into the auroch album. funny that they were both released by profound lore. not sure the product line is fully differentiated!

j., Saturday, 6 December 2014 19:28 (ten years ago)

turns out the cyntia album is really awesome. RIYL shredding, big choruses, virtua tennis ost (sega dreamcast ver.)

original bgm, Saturday, 6 December 2014 20:06 (ten years ago)

I usually wait until closer to the end in case someone campaigns for an album I may have overlooked. Plus I still gotta lay my hands on the Colour Haze! Comet Control grabbed me earlier in the year, but I need to give it a fresh listen

Fastnbulbous, Saturday, 6 December 2014 20:14 (ten years ago)

Nobody seems to want to campaign for anything just yet but they should because it does work. It influences some voters when they make their list.
I expect sund4r to campaign for some albums

VOTE in metal poll. Voting ends Friday 12th December (Cosmic Slop), Saturday, 6 December 2014 20:22 (ten years ago)

Well, I'm way-way-waaay out of the loop, so no votes, I'm afraid. My most played records metal records from this year I think are Triptykon + Coffinworm + Dead Congregation. Co-worker's been repping hard for Decapitated, so I guess I should give it a try. Don't think I've heard them since _Nihility_ came out 12 years ago, but I never cared about those first two records.

No idea wtf you guys see in Comet Control, but I don't really like singy hard rock, and my aural cosmic being travels with Gong, not Hawkwind.

Øystein, Saturday, 6 December 2014 20:43 (ten years ago)

And I like singing and Hawkwind, so...

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 6 December 2014 20:52 (ten years ago)

And Gong suck so fucking bad.

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 6 December 2014 20:52 (ten years ago)

wishing id bought the blut aus nord album earlier rather than 2 days ago, loving it so far. A strong year for USBM - i think the botanist and panopticon albums really stand out, for me 2 artists who have found a really personal twist on BM.

auto focus, Saturday, 6 December 2014 21:20 (ten years ago)

Are write-in votes acceptable? I just realized that I forgot to nominate

Alaskan - Despair, Erosion, Loss

EveningStar (Sund4r), Saturday, 6 December 2014 21:32 (ten years ago)

I'll add it to spreadsheet but beware that people have voted and therefore it might not place high

in return you can tell us why you like Jute Gyte! ;)

VOTE in metal poll. Voting ends Friday 12th December (Cosmic Slop), Saturday, 6 December 2014 21:34 (ten years ago)

yea the blut aus nord is great. prefer the production on MV II and prob the songs in general... but this one isn't too far off either.

original bgm, Saturday, 6 December 2014 23:51 (ten years ago)

How do you guys rate 2014 for metal?

VOTE in metal poll. Voting ends Friday 12th December (Cosmic Slop), Sunday, 7 December 2014 00:06 (ten years ago)

I couldn't have done without it. It was at least half of what I listened to this year. 2013 probably had slightly better highlights - the Carcass and In Solitude records.

jmm, Sunday, 7 December 2014 01:49 (ten years ago)

Oh man I just realized no one nominated the new Obake!

aenaon genesis aevangelist (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 7 December 2014 02:15 (ten years ago)

I feel much better about this now that I know its only okay

aenaon genesis aevangelist (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 7 December 2014 06:06 (ten years ago)

Wow this Botanist album is dope!

aenaon genesis aevangelist (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 7 December 2014 09:09 (ten years ago)

all the botanist stuff is worth checking out - there's a real progression across his stuff from I to VI, and the hammered dulcimer sounds so mighty. He brings such a fresh vision to what BM can do. I think it's been a really strong year for metal - some really big albums, like YOB, Pallbearer, Agalloch, and some excellent stuff on smaller labels - Botanist, anything on Fallen Empire (especially Alunar by Aureole), Naturmacht, a whole heap of interesting doom and black metal.

auto focus, Sunday, 7 December 2014 11:29 (ten years ago)

particularly campaigning for this great, fun old school dm record i heard through a blog

Listening to it now (it's on Spotify) yeah, this works! Who needs originality when you can sound like this.

which i think is about a pig roast

j., Sunday, 7 December 2014 17:19 (ten years ago)

Ancient Rites of Getting Conjured - very good title.

jmm, Sunday, 7 December 2014 17:43 (ten years ago)

think we have 19 ballots in. A lot more than we did after a week of voting last year and all the ballots came in on the last 4 days.

How is the new scheduling for you guys?

As I said earlier people said they didn't take part last year due to poll burnout in january. Do you think this schedule is better?

I think a week for voting is fine because everyone just left it to the last week anyway mostly.

VOTE in metal poll. Voting ends Friday 12th December (Cosmic Slop), Sunday, 7 December 2014 19:01 (ten years ago)

http://seventhatspells.bandcamp.com/album/the-death-and-resurrection-of-krautrock-io

This is probably the album for which I most want to campaign. More heavy rock than metal, which is where my taste lies tbh, and more Viking-corny than I usually go for, but the immense power is difficult to deny. I hear some Amon Duul II in places (tho it never achieves their swirling chaos) but as a whole this album seems more in the spirit of Zeppelin than anything German

aenaon genesis aevangelist (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 7 December 2014 19:03 (ten years ago)

I want to go on the record as not liking the week for voting, but I understand how impossible it is to please everyone, so I don't want to make an issue of it. Mostly my fault for let new music slip off my radar almost totally this year...

aenaon genesis aevangelist (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 7 December 2014 19:05 (ten years ago)

*letting

aenaon genesis aevangelist (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 7 December 2014 19:06 (ten years ago)

Never been sure about the whole need to hear new albums to vote in an EOY poll when there's a whole year for it. Yeah you might miss out on a few but not loads.

A few weeks isnt enough time to know if an album is good enough to be in your albums of year lists is it?

I'm still trying to root out a few more things that I might find interesting. I'll try not to leave voting to the last minute, but I probably will out of sheer absent-mindedness.

Listened to the Morbus Chron and Stargazer albums for the first time this afternoon, and they're not a million miles away from each other musically. Morbus Chron is fucking fantastic. Great dynamics and atmosphere.

Stargazer though should be right up my street, but I find them kind of dry and flavourless. Technically good but I don't get anything out of them.

ultros ultros-ghali, Sunday, 7 December 2014 20:10 (ten years ago)

Not heard the Stargazer. Dunno if it would be my thing?

VOTE in metal poll. Voting ends Friday 12th December (Cosmic Slop), Sunday, 7 December 2014 22:04 (ten years ago)

Worth a check, I think. I like but don't love Stargazer.

EZ Snappin, Sunday, 7 December 2014 22:08 (ten years ago)

Also, Generation of Vipers is so damn good. Sludge with rhythm.

EZ Snappin, Sunday, 7 December 2014 22:08 (ten years ago)

we're over the 50 ballot mark. 51 now. We got 53 last year so lets beat that.

VOTE in metal poll. Voting ends TODAY 11.59pm GMT (Cosmic Slop), Friday, 12 December 2014 12:57 (ten years ago)

Anyone still planning to vote? Still on the 51 mark. Had hoped to reach 60 but will settle for beating last years 53.

Thanks to all who have voted so far.

ps there's 7 hours 17 mins left to vote

only got 2 albums on this list, so can't vote.

that said, it's 2 more albums than i have got on any of the EOY lists ..

(and i would love to have a lot more from this list if i knew more re the bands ! but this is a whole new groove for me, so still learning the ropes )

mark e, Friday, 12 December 2014 17:44 (ten years ago)

you can always follow the results and the playlist

i am genuinely looking forward to it ..

mark e, Friday, 12 December 2014 18:09 (ten years ago)

Oh, I see that Zvi - Zvi, which I had nominated, does not appear on the spreadsheet. I am writing it in.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 12 December 2014 18:44 (ten years ago)

Just voted (for 14 albums, I think). I didn't vote for the Kayo Dot, even though I liked it, because I couldn't see a way in which it could be seen as metal.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 12 December 2014 18:48 (ten years ago)

its almost that time of year when lj pops in saying he forgot to vote

VOTE in metal poll. Voting ends TODAY 11.59pm GMT (Cosmic Slop), Friday, 12 December 2014 18:53 (ten years ago)

I left off Kayo Dot, too. Great record, but way too far off the reservation even for non-metal me.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 12 December 2014 18:54 (ten years ago)

I voted for it because I'm a fanboy but I don't think it was placed very highly. tbh I feel Alcest's newest and Have a Nice Life are about as 'metal', that is to say not at all.

ultros ultros-ghali, Friday, 12 December 2014 19:04 (ten years ago)

I don't consider the Alcest metal at all, either. (I don't care for the album in that case.)

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 12 December 2014 19:07 (ten years ago)

polls never been about purity. Its about albums we liked

VOTE in metal poll. Voting ends TODAY 11.59pm GMT (Cosmic Slop), Friday, 12 December 2014 19:20 (ten years ago)

Yeah, there were albums on there that I liked but I didn't feel fit the criteria. (That said, my top choice isn't exactly metal, either)

J3ff T., Friday, 12 December 2014 19:29 (ten years ago)

there's a few people who normally vote but havent but i dont really want to ask them on fb incase it looks like im bugging them , they havent posted on this thread but i assume theyre just busy. maybe they will vote.

polls never been about purity. Its about albums we liked

There's nothing pure about my list (and the Sunn O)))/Ulver album I voted for probably isn't metal either). I just couldn't see any metal elements in the Kayo Dot album, in order to be able to vote for it in a poll of metal albums.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 12 December 2014 19:59 (ten years ago)

I see it as a poll of metal culture, not just stuff that's formally metal, which means Alcest makes sense for inclusion. I'm not familiar enough with Kayo Dot to know whether they might qualify too.

Can this be added to the bottom of my ballot?:

Pallbearer - Foundations of Burden

Origin probably deserved a vote but I just didn't get the time to listen to it more than once.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 12 December 2014 21:09 (ten years ago)

Done.

death in Skegness (seandalai), Friday, 12 December 2014 22:11 (ten years ago)

Kayo Dot is great! When I saw them live they had violinist AND a fire breather.

Frobisher, Friday, 12 December 2014 22:12 (ten years ago)

Awesome! The album is just strange and retro for me to call it psych which will likely account for 90% of my ballot

black metal for black people (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 12 December 2014 22:23 (ten years ago)

nominated Serpentine Path - Emanations but it seems to have gotten lost in the shuffle. bummer.

still voted for it, that's a good one.
