If you read Can't Stop Won't Stop: The History of the Hip Hop Generation by Jeff Chang, the early parts of the book documenting this stuff, the real life gangs that inspired the Warriors, is the most fascinating stuff...the Ghetto Brothers (gang/funk band), Black Spades (which Bambaataa was the war chief and eventually spawned Zulu Nation), Seven Immortals, Savage Skulls, Savage Nomads, etc etc....
The director is using lots of footage from 80 Blocks From Tiffany's and Flyin' Cut Sleeves, but looks like he's dug up a lot of new stuff, plus tons of interviews...
This is basically the subculture that spawned hip hop and changed music forever. Super important story and super compelling....
also the director consulted a lot with King Klast who runs http://www.classicnystreetgangs.com/ here's an interview w/director and Benji from the Ghetto Brothers, who worked out the famous gang truce in NY, also Jim Carrey has signed on as producer it looks like so they should be able to have the dough to see the light of day on this

nine months pass...
As rampant with crime as that time was, I think I prefer it to the tourist mecca that the city is now.

this was incredible, so great to finally see the subject get the treatment it deserves - good archival footage, good interviews, and it actually ends on an upbeat/triumphal/inspiring note
