Has anyone heard "I, Thighpaulsandra" yet?

Musical collaborator with julian cope, spiritualised, coil (yay!) and apparently the waterboys (hmmmm....)....I see his solo album, and descriptions look quite interesting. The cover, on the crappy jpeg someone sent to me, reminds me of pallas' "the sentinel" (don't even ask)....but it's somewhat expensive (I'm broke) and no local rekord shop has a copy in!

Has anyone heard it? Any opinions?

It's amazing. Pick it up as soon as you've got the funds.

kyosuke shigure, Wednesday, 29 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, don't let the cover stand in the way of the music. Great albums frequently have great cover art, but it doesn't really work in reverse. If that were the case, Coil themselves would be a lot worse-off than they are now, not to mention certain Eno albums, Neurosis, etc.

And yes, if you think as highly of Thighpulsandra as your description indicates, you'll like it. It's quite good and highly Thighpulsandra-y.

Having turned down the opportunity to buy this so many times, I finally took the plunge yesterday.

It is next-level.

I mean, how else can you describe one of the most ambitious, varied, gargantuan electronic records ever made? This is genuinely far-reaching material. I only knew of TPS via his work with Spiritualized (and his participation in Coil), but the track-titles (and track-times) were enough to convince me of its interest value.

I haven't even listened to the half-hour monsters (there are two!) yet and it's full blown me away. Not all of it is hyper-complex electronic bleeps and swooshes, though; there are THREE garage-y/bluesy numbers (all clocking in at about 5 minutes) on the record, and all are rendered AMAZING by the grindingly HEAVY keyboard instrumentation and SLEAZY ELECTRONIC SOLOING. 'Home Butt Club' combines track-title with song particularly effectively; just think 'rapacious gay orgy' while listening and it's fucking outrageous, camp, and flat-out awesome. 'Optical Black' is one of the more show-stopping electronic experiments I've ever heard. 'Lycraland' is beautiful.

And yeah, there's a good hour of this record I'm yet to digest.

...and now I have heard Michel Publicity Window all the way through. I'm not even going to describe it.

This has to be some sort of musical Holy Grail.

"Michel Publicity Window" is one of the best long-form compositions in modern music and I will defend that opinion in the Supreme Court.

Just got offed, Thursday, 10 July 2008 07:42 (sixteen years ago)

I got this on 2LP but it does not have that song, still over 100 minutes long. Haven't formed much of an impression yet.

sleeve, Thursday, 10 July 2008 16:28 (sixteen years ago)

it does not have that song

I mean is this album radically different to NWW or is it just another thing I can get round to hearing eventually?

Right now, Optical Black sounds like the most ominous, monstrous music going. Listening to it is like watching the shadows of slowly descending spacecraft.

Optical Black, man. It's pretty much perfect. And it ain't even the best track on the album (probably). Speaking of which, if the album was just Disc 1 and "Terrible" from Disc 2 instead of "Abuse Foundation IV" (with an option of throwing in "We, The Descending" or "Home Butt Club" as well) you'd actually have one of the 5 best albums of the decade, IMO. And the cut-offs would still form a superb record in their own right. Thighpaulsandra is/was a genius. I need to get his other albums. That barely anyone else on ILM has heard OF this let alone heard it is deeply saddening for me.

REMOVE THEIR EARS (country matters), Wednesday, 31 December 2008 22:25 (sixteen years ago)

Fuck it, this is going in my decade-end top 5 anyway. Maybe even top 3.

Goodnight, Mr. Johnson. (country matters), Sunday, 11 January 2009 19:39 (sixteen years ago)

NV was asking upthread how this compares to NWW, I'm also curious if it is similar to Thighpaulsandra's work with Coil?

Joint Dark Energy Mission (I am using your worlds), Sunday, 11 January 2009 19:58 (sixteen years ago)

If you're thinking about the long epic trancey synth pieces of the Musick To Play In The Dark volumes, no it's not very similar (which was kind of a bummer for me). This record is a lot more complex, and reminds me of the weirder moments on the Black Light District album. Worthwhile, just don't go into it expecting stuff like those Coil pieces, or Time Machines, or Queens Of The Circulating Library (all of which feature TPS prominently).

Really wonder where this rad faerie's gotten to

Listening to Coil's 'Red Birds Will Fly Out Of The East And Destroy Paris In A Night' I'm practically quaking beneath his synthesisers. A fucking magician. Have any of you seen his studio tours on Youtube?

He's no longer mates with Copey btw - the latter wasn't so hip to his S&M deal

Coming up on eMego:

UUUU is a new outfit featuring Edvard Graham Lewis, Thighpaulsandra, Matthew Simms and Valentina Magaletti.

Individually these humans have implanted feathers in caps such as Coil, Dome, Wire, Tomaga, etc. Collectively they form UUUU, a powerhouse construction of fierce and free sonic exploration, as liberating as it is frightening, resulting in, the richly rewarding. The artists united present a project of exquisite curiosity and confident chaos where the individual thumbprints mesh into a gloriously muscular frenetic free sonic soup. It's Going All Over The Floor presents itself as a terse meeting between dance, ambient, abstraction and improvisation. The Latent Black Path Of Summons Served proceeds in a tense energy field where random elements bounce around until locking into a fourth world pattern designed to fall into a dense mass of ecstatic noise. Boots with Wings is classic Lewis - a pop tune from the other side of the mind.

UUUU is a schizophrenic seething/soothing masterpiece of a past/present hybrid equally at home in the club, the home and the mind.

And yes, The Golden Communion was incredible!

It is truly an honor for us to announce the release of URUK.
This remarkable new musical endeavor is a joint effort by Massimo Pupillo (Zu, Triple Sun) and Thighpaulsandra (Coil).

Their debut album will take you to dark and daring places -- just as you'd expect of these joint forces. But even more, URUK is a challenging yet immersive listen of exceptional depth. The album is slated for a December 8th release, but we can't wait to get into more detail. Expect more info soon.

URUK will tour Europe for the first time in December 2017, followed by a world tour in spring 2018
