MC Bin Laden

Mentioned in the funk carioca thread but deserves his own one, i think, if for no reason other than the frequency with which he's releasing great music.

I know very little about him other than that he's apparently an evangelical Christian irl, has a number of 11 or 12-year-old sidekicks - including one called MC Pikachu - and has released one of the best albums of the year. He seems even more abrasive and experimental than normal for the genre but has developed a big fanbase in Brazil this year. There's a profile on him here:

waddy watchel (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 22 December 2014 15:38 (ten years ago)

this is dope (which i was not expecting based on the name & 'evangelical christian'/'11-year-old sidekicks').

Passinho do Faraó
is one of my favorite songs of the year.

Daniel, Esq 2, Monday, 22 December 2014 15:53 (ten years ago)

here is the label's soundcloud page, which makes many of their songs available for authorized-download. it's probably best to take these songs in small doses (yes, it's chaotic music), but many of the songs are also great. there's a resident-advisor article, from earlier in 2014, on the whole scene, but i couldn't locate it via a quick search.

this guy needs a click track

Poliopolice, Monday, 22 December 2014 18:49 (ten years ago)

that's hemiola bruh

waddy watchel (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 22 December 2014 18:58 (ten years ago)

i'm semi-kidding... obviously he has a click track, but it's so jarring and chaotic. i can't imagine anyone possibly trying to do anything else while this is playing. it's incredibly distracting.

Poliopolice, Monday, 22 December 2014 19:33 (ten years ago)

was this one posted? it was the one that started mc bin laden, from what i recall.

This guy is ace, feel like not being Brazilian Portuguese lingual means I am not totally getting the anger of it but it is excellent music.

xelab, Monday, 22 December 2014 21:06 (ten years ago)

I rly did not expect to enjoy these.

local eire man (darraghmac), Monday, 22 December 2014 21:33 (ten years ago)

. . . and?

Daniel, Esq 2, Monday, 22 December 2014 21:37 (ten years ago)

really not hearing these tracks as 'chaotic', they're so minimal! i mean, is it that main clave that sounds weird to you guys?

virtuoso thigh slapper (Jordan), Monday, 22 December 2014 21:38 (ten years ago)

just to nerd out for a second it's a 3/2 clave (meaning three notes in the first half of the phrase, then two notes in the second), just like a regular ol' "Bo Diddley" clave. the difference is the first three notes are quarter-note triplets and the second two notes are straight, so it's like it keeps switching back from swung to straight.

i've been hearing this a lot in dj mixes of afro-brazilian music and i love it, but i'm not at all tuned in enough culturally to know where/when this variation started.

Dej & the Fommly Loaf (The Reverend), Monday, 22 December 2014 22:04 (ten years ago)

Daniel, Esq 2, Monday, 22 December 2014 23:17 (ten years ago)

xp Jordan -- that rhythm was all over that Prohibited Gang Funk from Rio comp that came out in like ... idk ... 2004?? It is awesome.

Mistah FAAB (sarahell), Monday, 22 December 2014 23:49 (ten years ago)

local eire man (darraghmac), Tuesday, 23 December 2014 00:27 (ten years ago)

nothing can spoil my day.

Daniel, Esq 2, Tuesday, 23 December 2014 00:27 (ten years ago)

local eire man (darraghmac), Tuesday, 23 December 2014 00:28 (ten years ago)

Passinho do Faraó
is one of my favorite songs of the year.
― Daniel, Esq 2, Monday, December 22, 2014 3:53 PM (Yesterday)

I really like a lot of the sonics in all of these songs, but I think this is the only one I properly love all the way through. It's fucking great.

emil.y, Tuesday, 23 December 2014 01:42 (ten years ago)

Finding this thread justifies still reading ILM for me

man alive, Tuesday, 23 December 2014 03:58 (ten years ago)

I love the way a lot of his songs sound like they're always building to something they never quite reach, like you're waiting for the drop that never comes.

man alive, Tuesday, 23 December 2014 03:59 (ten years ago)

lol at the cheap stones sample on "os terroristas"

cock chirea, Tuesday, 23 December 2014 04:16 (ten years ago)
