Points to them for not highly rating that yg hypergarbage like everyone else felt tmcompelled to for some reason

and I explained the Bechdel Test to her (sleepingbag), Tuesday, 23 December 2014 03:01 (ten years ago)

Voted Banks, was gonna either be that or Todd T or Grouper or Aphex from this lot.

RAP GAME SHANI DAVIS (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 23 December 2014 03:04 (ten years ago)

If they had "Content Nausea" instead of "Sunbathing Animal" I'd vote for that, but out of these I guess it's "Atlas".

o. nate, Tuesday, 23 December 2014 03:21 (ten years ago)

none of the above option

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 23 December 2014 03:23 (ten years ago)

i guess i like st vincent ok so that w/e

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 23 December 2014 03:23 (ten years ago)

Voted Angel Olsen

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 23 December 2014 03:24 (ten years ago)

what a weird year

maura, Tuesday, 23 December 2014 03:26 (ten years ago)

I keep thinking that too.

RAP GAME SHANI DAVIS (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 23 December 2014 03:29 (ten years ago)

the ones i've heard are both pretty good, but Future Islands over FKA twigs i guess

some dude, Tuesday, 23 December 2014 03:31 (ten years ago)

Syro.

Publications! Please stop fellating Future Islands... please!

You’re being too simplistic and you’re insulting my poor heart (Turrican), Tuesday, 23 December 2014 03:31 (ten years ago)

oh wait, i didn't see Vince Staples, definitely that (xp)

some dude, Tuesday, 23 December 2014 03:31 (ten years ago)

so proud of Future Islands that they've gotten to the level where people who don't get it are gigantic crybabies about other people liking them

some dude, Tuesday, 23 December 2014 03:32 (ten years ago)

*eyes glaze over*

i guess this is between eno/hyde and lykke li

hm

I wouldn't say that those who intensely dislike Future Islands "don't get it". Personally, I do get it. I get that they're painfully shite in every single possible way and from every single possible angle.

can there be a poll about the cosmo list instead

james brooks, Tuesday, 23 December 2014 04:06 (ten years ago)

if only there were a way for any user to start a thread

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 23 December 2014 04:08 (ten years ago)

do i have to start reading cosmo now wtf that is far better list

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 23 December 2014 04:12 (ten years ago)

By the end of April, my two favorite albums of 2014 were War on Drugs and Todd Terje, and I think that's still the case.

jaymc, Tuesday, 23 December 2014 04:21 (ten years ago)

hey now new threads rhetoric runs as follows: "anybody can start a new thread" / "who do you think you are starting a new thread?"

Vic Perry, Tuesday, 23 December 2014 04:23 (ten years ago)

well the cosmo list doesn't just poll itself

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 23 December 2014 04:24 (ten years ago)

St. Vincent

Only other ones I've heard are Run the Jewels, Todd Terje, Perfume Genius, Mac DeMarco, and Azealia Banks.

MaudAddam (cryptosicko), Tuesday, 23 December 2014 05:08 (ten years ago)

war on drugs, easily

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 23 December 2014 05:25 (ten years ago)

oh wait plus twigs

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 23 December 2014 05:26 (ten years ago)

i voted angel

j. winters (josh), Tuesday, 23 December 2014 05:31 (ten years ago)

i listened to like, 1/2 of these and none of them made that big of an impression.

Treeship, Tuesday, 23 December 2014 05:34 (ten years ago)

Swans, but I like Grouper and I haven't heard that album yet.

jmm, Tuesday, 23 December 2014 05:42 (ten years ago)

lol. LP1 and RTJ2 are the only ones that'll make my personal top 25, both floating around in my top 10 somewhere, not sure which is better YET, will or will not come back to vote.

jay., Tuesday, 23 December 2014 06:37 (ten years ago)

voted Real Estate, which will land somewhere around #10 on my list

alpine static, Tuesday, 23 December 2014 07:51 (ten years ago)

Swans

beard papa, Tuesday, 23 December 2014 07:57 (ten years ago)

quite happy i'd avoided the existence of this til now.

banks, twigs and staples, in that order, are the only ones i actively like, and i don't think any of them are like 10/10 amazing

heard and was lukewarm-to-unenthusiastic about: rtj2, terje, caribou, angel olsen, st vincent, arca

outright despise the past work, or what i heard of the current work, of: ariel pink, perfume genius, spoon, future islands, parquet courts

what a terrible list from an aesthetically awful publication

lex pretend, Tuesday, 23 December 2014 09:35 (ten years ago)

Swans is the only album here I like so it's an easy choice. I guess the Grouper albums is alright.

Dinsdale, Tuesday, 23 December 2014 10:16 (ten years ago)

Angel Olsen

Hinklepicker, Tuesday, 23 December 2014 10:17 (ten years ago)

The St Vincent album shits on this disappointing bunch of albums from a great height. And no Owen Pallett, for shame.

this is just a saginaw (dog latin), Tuesday, 23 December 2014 10:24 (ten years ago)

Those two artists aside, this has been the year of acts I really like following-up their previous work with albums that are 'just fine'-to-'disappointing'.

this is just a saginaw (dog latin), Tuesday, 23 December 2014 10:28 (ten years ago)

swans, twigs, eno/hyde >>> grouper, olsen >>> everything else

Ottbot jr (NickB), Tuesday, 23 December 2014 10:29 (ten years ago)

Swans is in my 'good, but not as good as the one before' list.

this is just a saginaw (dog latin), Tuesday, 23 December 2014 11:04 (ten years ago)

Not sure I really 'get' Twigs yet. I'm waiting for it to grow on me, but it feels a bit like this year's XX, who I also had trouble appreciating.

Swans #difficultoldmanlistening

sʌxihɔːl (Ward Fowler), Tuesday, 23 December 2014 12:15 (ten years ago)

I voted twigs. Terje, Caribou, perfume genius, st. vincent and azealia will probably all end up in my ILX ballot. I liked the war on drugs and RTJ albums as well. Vague thumbs up to lykke li, grouper and about half that Future Islands record.

Jesus I'm old. Except for Aphex I've never heard of any of this shit.

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 23 December 2014 13:47 (ten years ago)

Most of these acts are pretty established. I count five debuts, and the Terje and Banks albums were so long in gestation that it seems like the second album from both will seeml fresher.

uxorious gazumping (monotony), Tuesday, 23 December 2014 13:57 (ten years ago)

of the ones i've heard on the list, i don't think many will end up being considered the musicians' very best work. it's like a list of 2nd or 3rd best albums

♪♫_\o/_♫♪ (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 23 December 2014 13:59 (ten years ago)

I guess I someone to explain Angel Olsen to me

N337 (rip van wanko), Tuesday, 23 December 2014 14:10 (ten years ago)

i should probably give her another chance but upon listening to two of her songs last year i thought that she would sound really good at a moderately low level in a starbucks

♪♫_\o/_♫♪ (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 23 December 2014 14:11 (ten years ago)

Grouper

like several of these, though:

Run the Jewels - Run the Jewels 2
FKA twigs - LP1
Grouper - Ruins
Swans - To Be Kind
Todd Terje - It's Album Time (lol, forgot about this one)
St. Vincent - St. Vincent
Flying Lotus - You're Dead!
Vince Staples - Hell Can Wait EP
Parquet Courts - Sunbathing Animal (got tiresome too quickly tho)

should probably hear the Caribou, Perfume Genius & Eno/Hyde

Adding ease. Adding wonder. Adding (contenderizer), Tuesday, 23 December 2014 14:43 (ten years ago)

It's between FKA Twigs and Flying Lotus for me. Both are hovering around 5-6 on my list but I think I'll toss a vote FlyLo's way because he gets less love around here in general and I think he really outdid himself. The only other ones I really care about are Azealia Banks and Arca.

Dej & the Fommly Loaf (The Reverend), Tuesday, 23 December 2014 15:42 (ten years ago)

I voted for Future Islands, but I regret it now. I've been listening a lot to Terje and I think that might be my favorite of the year.

Still need to listen closely to Grouper, Van Etten and Caribou.

Pretty much my thoughts. I have time for some of these (Caribou, Terje, Twigs, Grouper, prob FlyLo if I spent more time with it) but nothing here is going to appear on my EOY albums ballot.

ticket to rmde (seandalai), Wednesday, 24 December 2014 01:28 (ten years ago)

By going on albums I listen to and have resonated, it's Our Love.

After than, FKA Twigs LP1, Syro, and Album Time

wince (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 24 December 2014 04:46 (ten years ago)

(I heard new FlyLo is more along the lines of his production work on Thundercat albums than his own past albums. Is this true bcz I really liked the first Thundercat album but had trouble getting into, like, Cosmogramma)

I don't think Spoon made the best record of the year or even remotely of their career, but I still voted for them here because the options were not far and away better. Nothing else here is even close to being on my personal list.

Heh. This is a really good point and also one that I feel like a lot of critics use as a point in their favor. I like Spoon a lot, too, but they definitely (as of Ga Ga Ga, probably?) get reviews that are like, "This band has been going strong for a really long time, and that in itself is awesome."
