This has some chaff but is still a lot better than the #1 list.

Drunk in Love > Stay With Me (Duet Version f/ Mary J. Blige) > Anaconda > Problem > Take Me to Church > Counting Stars > Stay With Me (Solo Version)

The Reverend, Wednesday, 31 December 2014 19:30 (ten years ago)

A weird feature of my 2014 was memorizing which radio stations played the MJB version of "Stay With Me" and which didn't.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 31 December 2014 19:31 (ten years ago)

1. drunk in love
2. stay with me
3. problem
4. anaconda
5. take me to church

didn't know the onerepublic song existed & i'm not sure i heard it

"drunk in love" is a classic and "stay wit me" & "problem" were a few of my fav radio jams of the year

"anaconda" is whatever, "take me to church" sounds better during commercials

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 31 December 2014 19:32 (ten years ago)

"drunk in love" is a classic, "anaconda" is shonky but ultimately super-fun and lovable, "problem" is fun but ultimately super-shonky and annoying, the rest is trash

lex pretend, Wednesday, 31 December 2014 19:36 (ten years ago)

"anaconda" is shonky but ultimately super-fun and lovable, "problem" is fun but ultimately super-shonky and annoying

ha this is so otm

The Reverend, Wednesday, 31 December 2014 19:44 (ten years ago)

usually #2s are better than #1s but i dunno about this set. Hozier or Beyonce i guess.

some dude, Wednesday, 31 December 2014 19:46 (ten years ago)

Yeah I hate this list a lot less. Also thank god we kept Sam Smith off the #1 spot.

Greer, Wednesday, 31 December 2014 19:49 (ten years ago)

Hozier or Beyonce i guess. o_O

The Reverend, Wednesday, 31 December 2014 20:00 (ten years ago)

jesus christ this fucking list

("drunk in love" I guess)

katherine, Wednesday, 31 December 2014 20:02 (ten years ago)

"Drunk in Love" is the only decent song on either the US #1s or US #2s list.

MaudAddam (cryptosicko), Wednesday, 31 December 2014 20:06 (ten years ago)

Fucking love this song when it is used in commercials

, Wednesday, 31 December 2014 20:09 (ten years ago)

these are much better than the #1s tbh

drunk in love > anaconda > counting stars > stay with me > take me to church > problem

dyl, Thursday, 1 January 2015 08:08 (ten years ago)

"Problem," no question

jaymc, Thursday, 1 January 2015 09:01 (ten years ago)

Like I feel like this is the kind of question that makes me feel alienated from ILX pop/rap/top 40/goon posters, because for me this is like obviously "Problem."

jaymc, Thursday, 1 January 2015 09:02 (ten years ago)

Like Iggy Azalea? Why the hate? I realize I said this about Macklemore, too, and I know it makes me sound like super-out-of-touch. Like, I know rationally why some people object to them, but I dunno, maybe I'm frivolous and maybe my white male cis privilege allows me to frivolous, but whatever recognition I have of their essential and perhaps impolitic ridiculousness and offensiveness isn't as strong when I'm listening to their music.

jaymc, Thursday, 1 January 2015 09:07 (ten years ago)

I just can't stand the grain of Iggy's voice.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 1 January 2015 13:26 (ten years ago)

"Counting Stars" is the only OneRepublic tune I like, thanks to constant radio play. It or "Drunk in Love," I guess.

well, i really really dislike "Problem" and "Anaconda" and "Stay With Me"

some dude, Thursday, 1 January 2015 14:38 (ten years ago)

my issue with "problem" is that once i heard the whispered part as a death threat i haven't been able to shake that interpretation and so it's basically the creepiest song in the world

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 1 January 2015 14:49 (ten years ago)

Counting Stars. It's catchy. And I like bands that have one hit every 5 or 6 years. Like Train.

LimbsKing, Thursday, 1 January 2015 16:53 (ten years ago)

"Counting Stars" over "Drunk in Love", which obviously already has enough support going for it (and I think there are far better tracks on Beyoncé anyway). From there on, it would probably go "Take Me to Church" > "Problem" > "Stay with Me" > "Anaconda"

Frontier Psychiatrist, Thursday, 1 January 2015 17:05 (ten years ago)

Problem > Counting Stars > Anaconda > Drunk In Love > Stay With Me > Take Me To Church

Could still switch problem and counting stars before I vote, and it's jay-z's fault Beyonce isn't higher.

da croupier, Thursday, 1 January 2015 17:12 (ten years ago)

like dude can you please interrupt your wife's romantic reverie to make an ike turner joke please

da croupier, Thursday, 1 January 2015 17:16 (ten years ago)

woops, meant to say "can you please not interrupt..."

da croupier, Thursday, 1 January 2015 17:17 (ten years ago)

ty for the v fresh insight anyway

r|t|c, Thursday, 1 January 2015 17:18 (ten years ago)

sorry i offended u by saying why i enjoyed the songs in question more or less than others

da croupier, Thursday, 1 January 2015 17:20 (ten years ago)

nice try, just the ike thing tho. ur entitled to ur greater-thans

r|t|c, Thursday, 1 January 2015 17:25 (ten years ago)

why are you mad

da croupier, Thursday, 1 January 2015 17:26 (ten years ago)

i mentioned the bummer that made a song that might have been my no. 1 my no. 4 on this greater thans poll, are we not supposed to talk about it

da croupier, Thursday, 1 January 2015 17:27 (ten years ago)

oh no what if foqs

like dude can you please interrupt your wife's romantic reverie to make an ike turner joke please
--da croupier

it's her song tho, so...

J0rdan S., Thursday, 1 January 2015 17:33 (ten years ago)

by which i mean i have never understood people who take the stance that jay ruins "drunk in love" without acknowledging beyonce's culpability in jay ruining "drunk in love"

J0rdan S., Thursday, 1 January 2015 17:34 (ten years ago)

uh, i think liking the song less is all the acknowledgment of culpability i need to do

look, i just mentioned the aspect of the song that makes me like it less. if you find that gauche/tiresome/etc don't worry we'll get back to fresh insights like "i don't care for sam smith" soon enough

da croupier, Thursday, 1 January 2015 17:35 (ten years ago)

yeah i mean are we really picking on each other for making slightly unoriginal comments when it's a year-end thread about songs that have been out for ages

un chill goon (some dude), Thursday, 1 January 2015 17:39 (ten years ago)

if you'd prefer i could go into my affection for "counting stars" (short version - the song jimmy iovine always wanted TV On The Radio to give him)

da croupier, Thursday, 1 January 2015 17:41 (ten years ago)

the weird insidious thing about OneRepublic is they never went away even when it seemed like they did. "Counting Stars" is their 6th multi-platinum single in the space of 7-8 years.

un chill goon (some dude), Thursday, 1 January 2015 17:42 (ten years ago)

This vote was so easy for me.

I gotta admit that I have managed to avoid Iggy's music altogether, and voted based on what I'm familiar with.

RAP GAME SHANI DAVIS (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 1 January 2015 17:50 (ten years ago)

Iggy has a corny fake accent, mediocre lyrics and says dumb shit online. Like vanilla ice before her that doesn't mean she can't put her name on a catchy tune, but it shouldn't be HARD to fathom why she's disliked

The Reverend, Thursday, 1 January 2015 21:50 (ten years ago)

"Anaconda" is the laziest bullshit song, it makes "All About That Bass" seem like Mozart-level genius

the farakhan of gg (DJP), Thursday, 1 January 2015 21:59 (ten years ago)

Otm

Drunk in Love is the best of these.

Treeship, Thursday, 1 January 2015 22:03 (ten years ago)

"Problem" is pretty good too tbh

Treeship, Thursday, 1 January 2015 22:07 (ten years ago)

really Iggy Wallaroo just compounds "Problem"'s uh...difficulties

The Reverend, Thursday, 1 January 2015 22:12 (ten years ago)

i honestly thought take me to church was an elton john song the first 500 or so times i heard it

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 1 January 2015 22:13 (ten years ago)

also: it only made it to no.2? didn't it sell about 8 zillion copies in the US?

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 1 January 2015 22:16 (ten years ago)

part of the charm of a tune like "Anaconda" for me is the way it really riles some people up

can't remember what i voted for in the end, cd've been Yonce, Nicki or Sam Smith

Gombeen Dance Band (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 1 January 2015 22:22 (ten years ago)

hate "stay with me" so much

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 1 January 2015 22:25 (ten years ago)

would argue it's the laziest bullshit song here

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 1 January 2015 22:29 (ten years ago)

agreed

un chill goon (some dude), Thursday, 1 January 2015 22:31 (ten years ago)

I heard it yesterday on the adult R&B station followed by Rene + Angela's "Your Smile" and was like, ohhhh I'm counting stars

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 1 January 2015 22:34 (ten years ago)

i don't remember ilx loving "drunk in love" this much, weird. don't really like any of these songs, tho i guess "problem" is the least depressing of ariana grande's sophomore output.

k3vin k., Thursday, 1 January 2015 23:11 (ten years ago)

i think it's more a question of 'any Beyonce song' vs. these artists and a more divisive Nicki song

un chill goon (some dude), Thursday, 1 January 2015 23:13 (ten years ago)

guess "problem" is the least depressing of ariana grande's sophomore output.

I like "Love Me Harder" fine, don't even mind The Weeknd.

Glad someone else finally said this.

MaudAddam (cryptosicko), Thursday, 1 January 2015 23:19 (ten years ago)

"Anaconda" seems like a good idea on paper. if you told me Nicki's big single this year would be her rapping in L'Trimm flows about letting a coke dealer eat her ass over a shameless Mix-A-Lot jack, i'd think be like OK, this has potential. but it just ends up less than the sum of its parts in every possible way.
