REM's "Superman", Spin Doctors "Jimmy Olsen Blues" and that annoying song by Five For Fighting are three examples...
Who can think of some more?

Lord Custos Omega (Lord Custos Omega), Thursday, 24 October 2002 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

There are endless "Superman" songs. "Waiting for Superman" by the Flaming Lips comes right to mind, but there are tons. (The REM song is a cover of someone else, by the way.)

Cannibal Corpse had the Wolverine Blues, and Joe Satriani had an infatuation with the Silver Surfer, although those are all instrumentals, right?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 24 October 2002 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

FLASH! ah ah.

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 24 October 2002 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Chad Kroeger & Josey Scott's "Hero" wins hands down.

Yancey (ystrickler), Thursday, 24 October 2002 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Cannibal Corpse had the Wolverine Blues
Supposedly Suicidal Tendencies "Suicidal Maniac" was dedicated to Wolverine as well.
Ah...Anthrax's "I am the Law" is supposedly about Judge Dredd.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 24 October 2002 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

No allegedly about "I Am The Law"; they used tons of Judge Dredd iconography to promote that song.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 24 October 2002 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmm. Never saw any of the promotion on that song. I heard it off a mixtape and said to myself: "Sounds like its about Judge Dredd."

Lord Custos Omega (Lord Custos Omega), Thursday, 24 October 2002 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

christoff (christoff), Thursday, 24 October 2002 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

"Iron Man" by Black Sabbath

Ah, yes. Nice. Although from the lyrics I don't think it's about the Marvel Comics Iron Man.

wl (wl), Thursday, 24 October 2002 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I knew someone was going to point that out, but it does include the line "kill the people he once saved," implying that at one point or another he acted as a super-hero. But, you're right....it has nothing to do with Tony Stark, etc.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 24 October 2002 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

"Flash Gordon" by Queen

Manny Parsons (Rahul Kamath), Thursday, 24 October 2002 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Cartoon Crew - Batman
Cinerama - Superman
Daft Punk - Superheroes
DJ Dick - Silver Surfer
Fall - How I Wrote Elastic Man
House Crew - Super Hero
Macka B - Blackman (based on the Batman theme)
Mekons - Dan Dare
Gil Scott-Heron - Ain't No Such Thing As Superman
Todd Terry - Bango (To The Batmobile)
Bobby Valentin - Batman's Bugaloo
Wedding Present - Catwoman, Brassneck or Dan Dare Pilot Of The Future
Gate Wesley - Do The Batman

plus the obvious Wu-Tang references, with the Johnny Blaze (=Ghost Rider) and Tony Starks (Tony Stark=Iron Man) aliases. And loads of others with coincidentally the same name as some super character.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 24 October 2002 21:31 (twenty-two years ago)

and Donovan's "Sunshine Superman"!

Ah, yes. Phat props to Donnie for showing Hal Jordan some love on there, too ("Superman and Green Lantern ain't got nothing on me")

Also: "We Are The Cartoon Heroes" by Aqua.

Daniel_Rf, Thursday, 24 October 2002 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Is "Brassneck" (by the Weddoes) about a superhero?!?!?!?!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 24 October 2002 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Laurie Anderson, "O Superman"
Bonnie Tyler, "Holding Out For a Hero"

Underclocked, Thursday, 24 October 2002 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, Brassneck was a robot character (more comedy than superhero, admittedly) in a British comic, so it sort of is, though more realistically it isn't. I wouldn't have mentioned it if I hadn't been mentioning two others by them. Come to that, Dan Dare wasn't a superhero either, what with not having a costume, secret identity or superpowers, and Catwoman has mostly been a supervillain rather than hero, so none of them are any good as suggestions, and I can only humbly apologise.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 24 October 2002 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Cheers, Martin.....as a Yank I always wondered what the hell "Brassneck" literally meant.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 24 October 2002 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Didn't Entombed do Wolverine Blues?

I do believe you're right. Thanks.

wl (wl), Thursday, 24 October 2002 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, how could anyone forget about the last-summer-omnipresent "Kryptonite" by Three Doors Down? I know I can't.
That song gave me the vague but persistent feeling that I'd be better off without tympanic membranes.

my first post.

Kevin H, Thursday, 24 October 2002 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Prince, "Batdance" (and related soundtrack contributions)

Our Lady Peace, "Superman's Dead"

j.lu (j.lu), Thursday, 24 October 2002 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Shaft isn't a superhero, he's just a bad mutha-(shut yo' mouth).

Dave Beckhouse (Dave Beckhouse), Thursday, 24 October 2002 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Oops, I see someone else already noted Prince's contribution.

But then there are the songs on the Heroes and Villains compilation that are about the Powerpuff Girls.

j.lu (j.lu), Thursday, 24 October 2002 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

"Batman Theme" by Iggy Pop
"Superman Lover" by Redman

Nick H, Friday, 25 October 2002 09:55 (twenty-two years ago)

If the werewolves, human flies, garbagemen, goo-goo-mucks, and any number of BAD women aren't superheroes to you, then I want no part of your world.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 25 October 2002 10:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I was hoping that someone else would have mentioned "Superman" by Black Lace (83) by now, but, oh well, me it is.

The Kinks' "Plastic Man" doesn't count by the way - it's a song about the most ordinary, pathetic, feeble bloke in the street, and how Ray Davies belittles his mealy-mouthed existence.
