Let's do this!
We'll begin with Jazmine Sullivan:

lol oops rolling R&B thread 2015
― un chill goon (some dude), Tuesday, 6 January 2015 01:26 (ten years ago)
gonna just throw my post from the other thread in here before i ask mods to delete that thread:
should hopefully be getting albums this year from Miguel, Jeremih (?), Maxwell (???????), Frank Ocean, Usher, Ne-Yo, Jazmine Sullivan, T-Pain, Tamar Braxton, The Weeknd, Ty Dolla $ign, TeeFLii, Elle Varner, Brandy, and Alicia Keys.
i heard a really good new Sevyn Streeter single, "Don't Kill The Fun," on the radio today, but it doesn't appear to be online yet (which I didn't think was possible anymore.

i'm excited for jazmine's album; "forever don't last" clicked w/ me so much recently
i need to hear that sevyn streeter single!! was chris brown on it? my googling just now seems to indicate that possibility
― dyl, Tuesday, 6 January 2015 05:52 (ten years ago)
yeah, CB is on it. i missed the beginning of the song so it's possible he has a verse or something but he didn't seem like he was on it very prominently, like glorified backup vocals basically.
― un chill goon (some dude), Tuesday, 6 January 2015 06:14 (ten years ago)
this was from last year, oh well, but i dont think i saw it in the R&B thread? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PC2XwUazy1Q

"Mascara" is a wonderful song but I'm not quite feeling the rest of the album besides "Stanley."
― guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 7 January 2015 19:14 (ten years ago)
the run from "forever don't last" to "masterpiece" is all really good to me. the rest other than "dumb" and "mascara" did not really click on one listen... but then again "forever don't last" is prob my favorite of them all and it had to grow on me over the course of ~a month.
― dyl, Wednesday, 7 January 2015 22:39 (ten years ago)
pretty psyched to dig into this. Dumb, Forever and Mascara were top tracks for last year.
― shmup....smug....shmub....shmug.... (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 8 January 2015 05:06 (ten years ago)
ha i came in to say i'm really feeling this brooding, dissatisfied album and i haven't even got to the stretch you guys love yet
― lex pretend, Thursday, 8 January 2015 12:00 (ten years ago)
her voice is a revelation
i'm going to be in a work cave for most of this month and i'm pretty happy that i can just soundtrack it with an endless loop of the rae sremmurd/dawn richard/jazmine sullivan albums. 2015 already better than 2014 tbh
― lex pretend, Thursday, 8 January 2015 12:02 (ten years ago)
and then i got to "stanley" and omg its outro and that bassline
― lex pretend, Thursday, 8 January 2015 12:12 (ten years ago)
I spoke too soon. "Stupid Girl," "Hoodlove," "Veins" – I love this. She's never sounded so confident, and the material allows her to perform with a hint of glamorous self-parody.

boys have toys too, you know they dothey call us stupid girls, they call us stupid girlsand when you love 'em like i do, you'll be a foolyou'll be a stupid girl, you'll be a stupid girl
― lex pretend, Thursday, 8 January 2015 16:46 (ten years ago)
dissatisfaction over making money (whether behind-the-curtain music industry stuff or theatre girl roles like "silver lining"), dissatisfaction over love that builds up to the most uptempo trax...who knew jazmine could sound so good so jaded? her last album was so elated
― lex pretend, Thursday, 8 January 2015 16:52 (ten years ago)
her vocal delivery on "stupid girl" and "if you dare" is unlike anything she's ever done before
"dumb" and "forever don't last" feel like real red herrings!
― lex pretend, Thursday, 8 January 2015 16:55 (ten years ago)
"Mascara" too – it's like she's attempting some mocking theatrical Shirley Bassey shit that works.
― guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 8 January 2015 16:56 (ten years ago)
i thought Love Me Back was a fantastic album and a hard act to follow, but so far this one is at least close to the same standard
― un chill goon (some dude), Thursday, 8 January 2015 17:23 (ten years ago)
according to the songwriting credits this is much more spare too: very much an intimate affair.
I officially love this record. The bonus track "If You Dare" is terrific too.

― dyl, Friday, 9 January 2015 18:59 (ten years ago)
xp Wow, Chris Brown sounds like hell there. Maybe he had a cold? Or did they just not tweak his voice in the studio? Like, why even have him on the track if that's his contribution?
― Evan R, Friday, 9 January 2015 19:01 (ten years ago)
oh i didn't listen to the youtube i just d/lded an mp3
― lex pretend, Friday, 9 January 2015 19:03 (ten years ago)

i mean yeah objectivity don't really come into it but eh who cares
basically i glean all of this from the tim westwood radio show here because tim continues to curate his dancehall style juggling sections of mustard wave and it is all simply irresistable
like the other week he even had me vibing on this before i had to slap myself
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PDDVE2l0sPw

not that anyone should be proud of capitalizing off 'thots' but of COURSE its French Montana who manages to swipe that one
― deej loaf (D-40), Sunday, 11 January 2015 14:05 (ten years ago)
lol yeah there is quite literally no other explanation for a fondness for that tune
tim seems to still have his old hotline to ny going so he plays the shit out of even the most minor french montana appearance, and that plus tim's trick of playing no more than 90 seconds of anything leads to these regrettable jammings
fwiw i checked the recent show i was thinking of and he fired thru all these in series
French Montana - Bad Bitch (feat. Jeremih / Diggy Simmons ft French Montana - Ain't Bout To Do / French Montana ft Jeremih & Chris Brown - Don't Panic / Wash - Can't Trust Thots ft. French Montana

i passed on covering natalie la rose for the french montana/jeremih record for my column but i feel like the latter just has a nice menacing darkness to it which is refreshing in the ratchet milieu
― deej loaf (D-40), Monday, 12 January 2015 02:51 (ten years ago)
his rappity rap follow up is kind of a regrettable direction imo but he can flow at least

― J0rdan S., Saturday, 3 October 2015 16:53 (ten years ago)
this guy's vibe is weird he did a hipster dance producer EP and is playing at Cool Brooklyn Venue baby's all right in a few weeks but then he has this traditional R&B song done by very tradition-driven producers
since he's on interscope i assume the latter will win out but i guess i could see him as a sort of test case for a brave new future where major labels try and break artists to "tastemaker" scenes first
― J0rdan S., Saturday, 3 October 2015 17:06 (ten years ago)
yeah i've been enjoying hearing "say it" on the radio. i didn't know pop & oak were involved, that's cool

Anyone disappointed with the Tamar Braxton? Starts strong, drags in the middle. Sometimes she wails like Keyshia Cole.

it's not great but not nearly as many missteps as her last album

the Baltimore rap station has a habit of putting non-official versions of big songs into their rotation, for instance they only ever play the shorter EP version of "Adorn." and the only way they ever play "Swimming Pools" is in a weird mix that affixes a minute of that Lloyd mixtape version to the Kendrick original. so it's not bad but i kind of hate it.

The first sampling from the album is "Hey (Extended Mix)".
