Best Ty Dolla $ign Atlantic Roster Stimulus Record

Message Bookmarked

Ty has given a boost to a bunch of otherwise iffy Atlantic artists & somehow resulted in some of my favorite recent records in spite of everything working against them. Which is best? (Plz note that Mila J is on Motown, not Atlantic. Kid Ink is also not with Atlantic.)

and none of these were/are hits lol

"RNGM" is the only that's partic great i think, it's too bad it got wasted on an artist with pretty much zero commercial prospects bcuz the beat/hook are really good ... it feels like a retrofitted version of "my cabana" that could've been a hit with a radio rapper on the verses

the "drunk af" beat is pretty fun but doesn't really congeal. the part of the chorus where ty harmonizes is really nice.

"1 time" would've been a good ty solo track.

"next to it" is fine .... i don't really hear what's great about the new wiz thing, sounds like a pretty typical track from him imo

J0rdan S., Sunday, 11 January 2015 18:06 (ten years ago)

Atlantic making strange bedfellows of their roster is definitely a thing but yeah i don't see how Ty being on a lot of people's records is especially noteworthy within that.

"Next To It" is pretty great, such an unexpected chemistry between Lupe and Ty and one of the producers from Sa-Ra Creative Partners. Lupe tweeted that Ty was a member of Sa-Ra when he first worked with them in '07 but i guess that's not right is it? but i guess he was hanging with them back then?

un chill goon (some dude), Sunday, 11 January 2015 18:29 (ten years ago)

p much all those guys do is hang out so yeah

ppl tend to invoke that link as proof of ty's hidden depths but really i'd say it said much more about neo soul's shallow cool

r|t|c, Sunday, 11 January 2015 18:51 (ten years ago)

Am I really supposed to listen to an 8-minute Wiz Khalifa song?

The Reverend, Sunday, 11 January 2015 19:42 (ten years ago)

'next to it' + RNGM are cool

listenied to that wiz thing a couple of times. would prob enjoy it more in album context which is a shame because i'm not gonna listen to a wiz khalifa album

out here like a flopson (tpp), Sunday, 11 January 2015 21:39 (ten years ago)

"RNGM" is all time so this is a no brainer

Evan R, Sunday, 11 January 2015 21:44 (ten years ago)

"RNGM" is the only that's partic great i think

Wrong. Every one of these is great.

This wiz record is so much better than the average recent wiz record. Listen again

deej loaf (D-40), Sunday, 11 January 2015 22:54 (ten years ago)

No one said they were "hits". It's a creative stimulus not a top 40 one. But who gives a fuck, rap /r&b radio has never been as weak as it is now

obviously a 9 minute song suite isn't a hit record. It's just the best thing wiz has been involved with in years

deej loaf (D-40), Sunday, 11 January 2015 22:56 (ten years ago)

In 2004 something like "next to it" would have been top 40 and everyone would like it but 90% of writers in 2015 will only stand up for a record of they sense a large amount of social energy behind it

deej loaf (D-40), Sunday, 11 January 2015 23:00 (ten years ago)

Re: Ty/neo soul I think he himself spins it as a part of his I'm a thoughtful musician bona fides with the press -- his original group, Ty and kory, was more like dilla influenced r&b, though.

deej loaf (D-40), Sunday, 11 January 2015 23:27 (ten years ago)

He was basically like, I wanted to make sa ra/ post dilla music but no girls ever came to the shows

deej loaf (D-40), Sunday, 11 January 2015 23:29 (ten years ago)

"creative stimulus" is a hilarious way to describe what is going on here

isn't this much the same argument deej was arguing against in the azealia banks thread. "but she's not commercial" etc etc etc

lex pretend, Monday, 12 January 2015 15:36 (ten years ago)

a popular artist/hook singer getting put on a bunch of records by other artists with flagging or no popularity is not a new phenomenon in rap as we all know

i'm not quite sure how this is much different... all of these songs sound like solo ty tracks with random ppl grafted onto them anyway

J0rdan S., Monday, 12 January 2015 15:43 (ten years ago)

Lol really lex

Azaelia banks would not be anywhere near the charts in 2002 either

They don't though, that's exactly the point. They're actually written to the specifics of the artists involved.

deej loaf (D-40), Monday, 12 January 2015 15:44 (ten years ago)

ok

J0rdan S., Monday, 12 January 2015 15:45 (ten years ago)

"Next to it" is great bc it is totally written to complement Lupe's essential lupe-ness. Ditto the wiz record ...in fact you were just saying it sounds like a typical wiz record now you're saying it sounds like Ty, which is it? The answer is that its Ty building on his collaborators core sound rather than running from it or contrasting with it. Enhancing that artist's general vibe

I don't know what's so funny about a creative stimulus as an idea, these are mostly washed up or lame label artists responsible for generally lame sub par trash of late and he's helped them all produce great songs by encouraging them to be themselves

deej loaf (D-40), Monday, 12 January 2015 15:52 (ten years ago)

As opposed to b.o.b.'s typical cynicism trying to be everyone to all ppl

deej loaf (D-40), Monday, 12 January 2015 15:52 (ten years ago)

the wiz song is the only one that really sounds like the artist, but wiz's sound is so pervasive especially as it pertains to beach house that pulling apart the strands is pointless

J0rdan S., Monday, 12 January 2015 15:55 (ten years ago)

You don't think "next to it," a concept record that only works if the rapper writes details about things being next to other things, isn't a lupe fiasco track in literally every single way

deej loaf (D-40), Monday, 12 January 2015 16:01 (ten years ago)

At any rate I'm not even sure what you're trying to argue with here ... These are all washed up or uninspired Atlantic artists who happened to have made great records written by Ty, it's a pretty straightforward thread

deej loaf (D-40), Monday, 12 January 2015 16:03 (ten years ago)

i think you're seeing some strain of purity in these tracks because you're invested in ty as an auteur

i'm more cynical about why he's on songs by these artists

J0rdan S., Monday, 12 January 2015 16:05 (ten years ago)

i do think it's a good idea for a thread though, as evidenced by the fact that i was the first one to post in it 20 hours after you made it

J0rdan S., Monday, 12 January 2015 16:09 (ten years ago)

btw i think both the bob and snow tha product songs on here would be very good ty solo tracks if they didn't have worthless filler verses

J0rdan S., Monday, 12 January 2015 16:13 (ten years ago)

same for the wiz one though he tends to sound good on those kinda tracks

J0rdan S., Monday, 12 January 2015 16:14 (ten years ago)

i guess i'd feel more comfortable with the idea of ty as master tailor if 'stand for' didn't seem like such a bad fit

r|t|c, Monday, 12 January 2015 16:14 (ten years ago)

not that it really matters as he is simply way too creepy to ever prosper solo

deej loaf (D-40), Monday, 12 January 2015 17:11 (ten years ago)

i like but dont love 'stand for' but haven't given much thought as to why, similar concept worked better as that song at the end of 'beach house' about his guys locked up in prison

deej loaf (D-40), Monday, 12 January 2015 17:11 (ten years ago)

the wiz verse is pitch perfect for the record

deej loaf (D-40), Monday, 12 January 2015 17:12 (ten years ago)

i mean it's a low bar bc it's wiz, but he manages to not sink it & stay within concept and get deep (for wiz)—"who gives a fuck about money and material shit life's wasted"

deej loaf (D-40), Monday, 12 January 2015 17:15 (ten years ago)

tailor gang indeed

deej loaf (D-40), Monday, 12 January 2015 17:17 (ten years ago)

"stand for" is a good song, just a poor choice for a single -- we can split the hairs here pretty easily

J0rdan S., Monday, 12 January 2015 18:48 (ten years ago)

i can't blame anyone for having already forgotten Stalley's entire existence, but this came out on Atlantic, and unlike 4/5ths of the poll options i actually heard it on the radio a few times

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mS969DYxUSY

some dude, Monday, 12 January 2015 19:00 (ten years ago)

i kind of assumed "Stand For" was never really intended for radio and was just kind of released to cast him in a different light before they properly launch the album with "Booger Woofs (Can Buy Their Own Drinks)" or whatever.

some dude, Monday, 12 January 2015 19:06 (ten years ago)

lol

I like the new Stalley album!

Spottie, Monday, 12 January 2015 19:09 (ten years ago)

"1 time" would've been a good ty solo track.

coming back to point out that what makes this song work is the interplay between the two artists, totally wouldn't work as a ty solo record

"Not For Long" is def one of the best songs B.o.B has ever bought, it's like "Hold On, We're Going Home" but good but also with bad rap verses

raccoon tanuki dye dashiki nefertiti edges kinky (some dude), Tuesday, 17 February 2015 21:20 (ten years ago)

No song as obvious as "kitty" sounds good on first listen but it'll grow on everybody even if they don't want it to; it's Ty's "Shake It Off"

Evan R, Tuesday, 17 February 2015 21:36 (ten years ago)

i think it's more likely his "Guap"

raccoon tanuki dye dashiki nefertiti edges kinky (some dude), Tuesday, 17 February 2015 21:38 (ten years ago)

The BOB/MMTS has lowkey been my radio jam for a minute

The Reverend, Tuesday, 17 February 2015 21:55 (ten years ago)

I think Tinashe sounds great on "Drop That Kitty". Listened to it twice and couldn't tell you a thing about Ty's bits though, he's completely overshadowed by the two women (as imo Iggy was for the most part on "Fancy")

bae sremmurd (monotony), Tuesday, 17 February 2015 21:58 (ten years ago)

xp Ditto on the BOB track. It's super pleasant. There's a hundred ways they could have dialed it up into something loud and obnoxious and probably a bigger hit than it is, but they resisted them and I really appreciate that

Evan R, Tuesday, 17 February 2015 22:00 (ten years ago)

Yeah, well said

The Reverend, Tuesday, 17 February 2015 22:37 (ten years ago)

No one overshadowed anyone the song is just bad front to back

deej loaf (D-40), Tuesday, 17 February 2015 23:29 (ten years ago)

Drop that kitty I mean, not the mmts

deej loaf (D-40), Tuesday, 17 February 2015 23:29 (ten years ago)

lol i love "drop that kitty" more than anything else ty's done since "my cabana"

charli's hook is so much better than her "fancy" one which was a bit lurching for my tastes. it's got bite to it, i appreciate her bringing an up middle finger attitude to the strip club

tinashe does try very hard but it's like her "jealous" remix, she still sounds like she's having fun singing in this way that she doesn't on her own material

great pop song

lex pretend, Wednesday, 18 February 2015 12:01 (ten years ago)

the bob/mmts is definitely a low-key bump as well

lex pretend, Wednesday, 18 February 2015 12:03 (ten years ago)

Ty Dolla $ign is, after all, the consummate collaborator, a man whose voice provides a kaleidoscopic range of musical possibilities to any artist he works with. He is studied and surgical, his vocal choices and melodic references revealing a love of music that extends far beyond the riffs of his contemporaries. On Scorpion, and several other recent records, Ty Dolla Sign’s voice lifts the work of his collaborators from good to great.
