i've had "back, baby" stuck in my head for the past few days

i was pleasantly surprised that the new one had a lot of the same kind of lo-fi intimacy as her debut...would've been easy for her to leave that behind on this one.

yeah, the new one is kind of a disappointment, honestly. is it too harsh to say the novelty has worn off a bit? it's not /bad/ by any means, but i don't know how much it adds to the previous album (except for the great part where it sounds like your turntable has speed issues)

yeah, actually that's a good point! if you're coming to her for the first time, i imagine the new one would be about as good as the previous one.

the slowdown part is soooo great, idk i loved the first one and love this one too even though it doesn't bring a lot of new stuff to the table

there's a slowdown, and later a subtle speed-up as well.. just lots of unsettling play with speed

listened to it again this morning and didn't notice anything tho i was not in "close listening" mode, are there any particular tracks in which this happens?

Back, Baby was my #1 song last year and this album lived up to the hype. Just discovered and I still haven't tried the rest of her catalogue.

I never got around to checking out the first two albums though they sounded interesting, heard this new song couple of times now and really like it.

New album is her best album, easy.

Quiet Signs is still my favorite album of the year after When I Get Home.

I revisited Quiet Signs today after a while, and it's still gorgeous and perfect. Probably my favorite album of its kind since Vashti Bunyan's Heartleap. Beyond her lovely distinctive voice and tastefully spare instrumentation, she makes a lot of compositional choices that really hit the pleasure centers in my brain: ample use of the Dorian mode, lots of major 7th chords. It's fairly short at 28 minutes, but not a second is wasted

Quiet Signs so beautiful. Spun her first album till it burnt and figured there couldn't be much modification on the work in her other albums to be worth visiting. I was wrong, what a bright and pretty set of tunes. Quiet Signs is Joao Gilberto and S/T is Pink Moon, same instruments but two different worlds.

Yeah, it is good, despite my vagueness above in 2019 lol. It's actually been on intermittent rotation on my car CD player for many months after a surprise appearance in a large local retailer's 'clearance' bins. (Weirdly, that still applies, antipodeans!)

That's my fave. The arrangements with baritone sax, mellotron, and exotic percussion, and the la la la la la la on top... So good! Couldn't have placed the sound but perhaps i need to dig through Goffin-King compilations.

It's "this last year" folks. An evergreen melody and chord progression: primary school kids I've taught it to have said "this sounds really familiar"! A song that goes exactly how you think it should, on first listen, every note already there in your subconscious.

P. Flick, i think the melody i'm reminded of specifically is "up on the roof" (the version by little eva is one of my favorite recordings)
