really? no thread for her?

well, her new album is out, so what do y'all think?

I dunno. (amateurist), Sunday, 25 January 2015 23:51 (ten years ago)

there's a funny musical citation of duran duran on this album, did you catch it?

I dunno. (amateurist), Monday, 26 January 2015 00:01 (ten years ago)

ooh, I loved her last album a lot! did she make any radical changes?

erry red flag (f. hazel), Monday, 26 January 2015 01:50 (ten years ago)

decent writer, like the semi-throwback styling, but ultimate a bit same-y and limited in her palette

nope!

I dunno. (amateurist), Monday, 26 January 2015 03:17 (ten years ago)

i've had "back, baby" stuck in my head for the past few days

j. winters (josh), Monday, 26 January 2015 06:59 (ten years ago)

i was pleasantly surprised that the new one had a lot of the same kind of lo-fi intimacy as her debut...would've been easy for her to leave that behind on this one.

alpine static, Monday, 26 January 2015 07:43 (ten years ago)

Joanna Newsom for the masses (that's a compliment)

nostormo, Sunday, 8 February 2015 19:45 (ten years ago)

that would make sense if joanna newsom weren't herself quite popular, much more so than jessica pratt.

I dunno. (amateurist), Monday, 9 February 2015 09:19 (ten years ago)

also lazy comparison

j. winters (josh), Monday, 9 February 2015 09:19 (ten years ago)

I agree with this: semi-throwback styling, but ultimate a bit same-y and limited in her palette

curmudgeon, Monday, 9 February 2015 16:12 (ten years ago)

yeah, the new one is kind of a disappointment, honestly. is it too harsh to say the novelty has worn off a bit? it's not /bad/ by any means, but i don't know how much it adds to the previous album (except for the great part where it sounds like your turntable has speed issues)

I dunno. (amateurist), Tuesday, 10 February 2015 23:29 (ten years ago)

oh and the duran duran musical quote.

I dunno. (amateurist), Tuesday, 10 February 2015 23:29 (ten years ago)

good thing i never listened to the previous one

nostormo, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 23:33 (ten years ago)

yeah, actually that's a good point! if you're coming to her for the first time, i imagine the new one would be about as good as the previous one.

I dunno. (amateurist), Wednesday, 11 February 2015 00:18 (ten years ago)

the slowdown part is soooo great, idk i loved the first one and love this one too even though it doesn't bring a lot of new stuff to the table

alpine static, Wednesday, 11 February 2015 00:52 (ten years ago)

there's a slowdown, and later a subtle speed-up as well.. just lots of unsettling play with speed

I dunno. (amateurist), Wednesday, 11 February 2015 01:03 (ten years ago)

kind of justifies the vinyl-only release

I dunno. (amateurist), Wednesday, 11 February 2015 01:04 (ten years ago)

the new one? i got it on cd

adam, Wednesday, 11 February 2015 01:05 (ten years ago)

oh, i thought it was vinyl only. hmm.

I dunno. (amateurist), Wednesday, 11 February 2015 02:46 (ten years ago)

does the CD have digital distortion at the points where the vinyl appears to slow down?

I dunno. (amateurist), Wednesday, 11 February 2015 02:46 (ten years ago)

listened to it again this morning and didn't notice anything tho i was not in "close listening" mode, are there any particular tracks in which this happens?

adam, Wednesday, 11 February 2015 14:35 (ten years ago)

Back, Baby was my #1 song last year and this album lived up to the hype. Just discovered and I still haven't tried the rest of her catalogue.

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 11 February 2015 19:36 (ten years ago)

going to see her tonight, will report back

aw, album's not out until February

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Friday, 2 November 2018 18:33 (six years ago)

I never got around to checking out the first two albums though they sounded interesting, heard this new song couple of times now and really like it.

New album is her best album, easy.

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Sunday, 10 February 2019 00:58 (six years ago)

new album is fantastic, still like the debut better tho

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Sunday, 10 February 2019 02:32 (six years ago)

Perhaps less immediate than the last one. Not sure what to think after two listens in an hour.

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Sunday, 10 February 2019 02:33 (six years ago)

production is like slow rain on a pond

new (february, 2019) record is a+ btw

budo jeru, Wednesday, 20 November 2019 08:33 (five years ago)

Quiet Signs is still my favorite album of the year after When I Get Home.

winters (josh), Wednesday, 20 November 2019 21:08 (five years ago)

one year passes...

I revisited Quiet Signs today after a while, and it's still gorgeous and perfect. Probably my favorite album of its kind since Vashti Bunyan's Heartleap. Beyond her lovely distinctive voice and tastefully spare instrumentation, she makes a lot of compositional choices that really hit the pleasure centers in my brain: ample use of the Dorian mode, lots of major 7th chords. It's fairly short at 28 minutes, but not a second is wasted

J. Sam, Friday, 24 September 2021 19:17 (three years ago)

two years pass...

Quiet Signs so beautiful. Spun her first album till it burnt and figured there couldn't be much modification on the work in her other albums to be worth visiting. I was wrong, what a bright and pretty set of tunes. Quiet Signs is Joao Gilberto and S/T is Pink Moon, same instruments but two different worlds.

H.P, Tuesday, 16 January 2024 07:33 (one year ago)

Yeah, it is good, despite my vagueness above in 2019 lol. It's actually been on intermittent rotation on my car CD player for many months after a surprise appearance in a large local retailer's 'clearance' bins. (Weirdly, that still applies, antipodeans!)

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Tuesday, 16 January 2024 11:36 (one year ago)

I gasped when I saw this revive. Please, JP, it’s been 5 years.

i need to revisit her records soon

budo jeru, Tuesday, 16 January 2024 17:20 (one year ago)

xp I also gasped on revive. I love Quiet Signs so much. Was gonna try to explain why but looks like I did that upthread a couple years ago...

J. Sam, Tuesday, 16 January 2024 18:16 (one year ago)

Sorry bout the false flag hah

H.P, Tuesday, 16 January 2024 21:40 (one year ago)

she's sorta vanished (from the Internet) but I'd love a surprise return with album #4

the absence of bikes (f. hazel), Tuesday, 16 January 2024 22:06 (one year ago)

Not to jump on you too H.P., but I had a similar reaction. It wasn't a gasp, but definitely an audible, "FINALLY" when I saw it bumped.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 16 January 2024 22:14 (one year ago)

Just found my new board gimmick. Now to find the Joanna Newsom thread….

While I’m here, Bushel Hyde. So simple, so powerful, what a song to have on your first album.

She still posts once a month or so on her twitter I think? Album #4 still a possibility

H.P, Tuesday, 16 January 2024 23:25 (one year ago)

she's scheduled to play primavera sound this year so I think it's possible a new record could be out soon

this is cool. love that it's 27 minutes. more 27-minute albums, please

budo jeru, Friday, 3 May 2024 22:27 (one year ago)

Stunning album. My favourite of the year so far by a long way.

kitchen person, Saturday, 4 May 2024 01:24 (one year ago)

It's so good. Just taught a student "the last year" last night. Beautiful closer

finding time to revisit this. love it.

"better hate" sounds like a lost goffin-king joint

budo jeru, Wednesday, 9 October 2024 00:32 (ten months ago)

That's my fave. The arrangements with baritone sax, mellotron, and exotic percussion, and the la la la la la la on top... So good! Couldn't have placed the sound but perhaps i need to dig through Goffin-King compilations.

Worth listening to her new monthly NTS show.

And her pick of the Paul Williams record on Whats In My Bag has somehow permanently stuck with my image of her

ionjusit (P. Flick), Wednesday, 9 October 2024 22:14 (ten months ago)

It's "this last year" folks. An evergreen melody and chord progression: primary school kids I've taught it to have said "this sounds really familiar"! A song that goes exactly how you think it should, on first listen, every note already there in your subconscious.

H.P, Wednesday, 9 October 2024 22:21 (ten months ago)

P. Flick, i think the melody i'm reminded of specifically is "up on the roof" (the version by little eva is one of my favorite recordings)

budo jeru, Thursday, 10 October 2024 00:26 (ten months ago)

her pick of the Paul Williams record on Whats In My Bag

who co-wrote "Fill Your Heart" !

lol somehow I was hoping this would be the younger New Zealand Paul Williams
