I remember Tom Scharpling saying this about Zappa, I sort of have this with the Dead. Does anyone else suffer from this?

Oasis interviews back when the bros. did them together (though i'm more just neutral on their music)

ICP

A Severus of Snapes (contenderizer), Friday, 30 January 2015 01:44 (ten years ago)

Oh yeah, I've always wanted to check those Oasis interviews out...thanks!

Iago Galdston, Friday, 30 January 2015 01:57 (ten years ago)

The Dead are definitely way more interesting to read about than listen to

walid foster dulles (man alive), Friday, 30 January 2015 02:03 (ten years ago)

the track-by-track Eagles listening thread is way more interesting than any of the Eagles songs I've ever heard

Sort of indifferent to Rammstein's music, but love their antics.

I think I can speak for of us victims of love participants in that thread by offering a hearty...

Well, yeah.

Joy Division. Also, very very glad to see someone who does not like Steely Dan.

brimstead, Friday, 30 January 2015 04:07 (ten years ago)

I hated the Doors until I read a book about them.

Poliopolice, Friday, 30 January 2015 05:48 (ten years ago)

I'm fairly non-enthusiastic about Talking Heads, though I definitely don't DISlike them. I love how much passion people devote to the topic when speaking/writing about them, though.

Miles Davis

anthony braxton diamond geezer (anagram), Friday, 30 January 2015 06:11 (ten years ago)

Hmmm... but do I dislike Blink 182?

MikoMcha, Friday, 30 January 2015 13:17 (ten years ago)

Oasis, definitely.

MikoMcha, Friday, 30 January 2015 13:17 (ten years ago)

Beatles, Zappa.

ICP is a pretty good answer to this. Their interviews (especially with anyone trying to "nail" them) are incredible.

The Fall

Dinsdale, Friday, 30 January 2015 13:58 (ten years ago)

Why?/Y0ni Wolf. i really like his weekly podcast, which has gotten me more into his music, but i'd still rather listen to him talk than listen to his records.

lil urbane (Jordan), Friday, 30 January 2015 14:55 (ten years ago)

Zappa. I actively dislike his music (some of which I completely loathe), but his autobiography was pretty entertaining, even if it had a bit too much "everyone is stupid except me."

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 30 January 2015 14:58 (ten years ago)

I'd have to take another look at the Ben Watson book, but I think the definitive book about FZ hasn't been written yet. The Neil Slaven one was absolute crap...the more I think about it the madder I get.

I'm not an Elvis Presley fan, but a detailed non-fawning bio would probably be really good. (Any recs?)

WilliamC, Friday, 30 January 2015 15:10 (ten years ago)

Guralnick's Presley bios are likely your best bet. They're definitely not fawning, but almost to a fault: at a certain point, the retelling of events gets bland enough that you wish a critical voice would step in for a minute (and Guralnick's critical voice does occasionally, but only for a minute). But they're insanely detailed/well-researched.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 30 January 2015 15:15 (ten years ago)

the Zappa autobio I had was pretty entertaining but yeah I kinda came out of it having my worst suspicions about Zappa confirmed

U2

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 30 January 2015 15:25 (ten years ago)

Bill Flanagan's U2 bio from the nineties is one of the smartest of its kind; it hoodwinked me into liking them for a few minutes.

I love reading up about pretty much any band that I dislike, to be honest.

You’re being too simplistic and you’re insulting my poor heart (Turrican), Friday, 30 January 2015 16:50 (ten years ago)

Alfo can you confirm for me that that U2 book has a chapter detailing Bono's "nautical kleptomania" where he steals boats any chance he gets?
I read it as a teen and that chapter seems too weird to be a real memory

sonny and sber (fgti), Friday, 30 January 2015 17:19 (ten years ago)

I don't remember the phrase, but yeah, he likes boats and skinnydipping.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 30 January 2015 17:22 (ten years ago)

Ugh, Bono skinnydipping, thx for that guys

A trumpet growing in a garden (Tom D.), Friday, 30 January 2015 17:24 (ten years ago)

Bono is a Parrothead!
