U2 are pretty much at the stage in their career now when the Stones released this tho

I love the story in Keef's book about how he wrote "You Don't Have To Mean It" by visiting a whorehouse run by one of his neighbors in Jamaica (who used to be a bodyguard for the Stones back in the day), asking for his two best girls, and then interviewing them about their lives, taking anecdotes for the lyrics and working out the tune while the women took a nap.

The Stones had a number of the album's songs remixed in extended versions but have as yet not released any of them e.g. "Out of Control / Papa Was a Rolling Stone": 10 minutes, 10 seconds, "Might as Well Get Juiced" aka "Keith's Revenge Mix": 10:54, "Always Suffering" aka "Sentimental Mix": 9:27, "Already Over Me" aka "Ancient Remix": 9:27

GUNFACE
(Jagger/Richards)

Gonna go downtown
Gonna get my gun
Gonna dress real sharp
Gonna beat my drum
I ain't gonna lie

Gonna walk so slow
Gonna talk just right
And my diamond ring
Gonna shine so bright
I ain't gonna lie

I've got a debt to repay
I ain't gonna cry
I put a gun in your face
You'll pay with your life

And I got my ears
And I got my eyes
And I got my narks
And my alibis
I won't waste your time

You made one false move
You made one mistake
When the juice is squeezed
That's the way it breaks
You'll pay for your crime

Your tongue lickin' way out of place
I'll rip it out
I'll stick a gun in your face
You'll pay with your life

I taught her everything I taught her how to dream
I taught her everything
I'm gonna teach her how to scream
I taught her all she knows
I taught her how to lie
I taught her everything
I'm gonna teach her how to cry

And you cause me hurt
And you cause me pain
And you turned the tap
On my burning rage
And I can't put it out

Gonna leave no sign
Gonna leave no trace
Gonna leave this town
In a state of grace
Give me the power

I got a debt to repay
I ain't gonna lie
I put a gun in your face
You'll pay for the crime

I taught her everything
I taught her how to speak
I taught her all she knows
I taught her how to eat
I half invented her
And now she acts so chic
I taught her everything
But now she's obselete

I taught her everything
How to read and write
I taught her all she knows
She was a neophyte
I taught her everything
I loved to watch her grow
I taught her everything
And now I want to see her go

I taught her everything
I got a debt to repay
I ain't gonna cry
I'll put a gun in your face
You're playing with your life

I taught her everything
I taught her how to cheat
I taught her all she knows
She was so indiscreet
I taught her everything
I taught her how to lie
I taught her everything
I'm gonna teach her how to cry

Kind of surprised Bono's not rockin' a Marley tee.

I'm so glad this wasn't the last Stones record. A Bigger Bang is fantastic. This, not so much.

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 5 February 2015 21:02 (ten years ago)

I'm sure I heard Saint of Me on the radio once and it sounded fantastic. Repeat listens have me wondering if this is some kind of false memory.

yeah listening now and it's sounding good again!

"Already Over Me" gives some credence to Jagger's claim that their best newer stuff are ballads/slow tunes.

"Flip The Switch" - admirably clattery, recommended to fans of dirty work

"Has Anybody Seen My Baby?" - horny old dude at karaoke singing "constant craving" over "miss you" for some reason

"Low Down" - splits the difference between the two previous tracks, some nice gaudy moments where the backing vocalists and horns crest over the rhythm track, but mick doesn't own this kind of big budget trash the way, say, steven tyler can

da croupier, Thursday, 19 February 2015 00:25 (ten years ago)

"already over me" - i wouldn't swear ryan adams has recorded a better faux-exile ballad but it's not impossible

"gunface" - really curious what the process was for obvious album tracks, did keith actually think this was a good lyric? do they still tell each other when they don't like something? or is it just like "well that was fun, sure put another guitar on it" unless don was or somebody thinks its the single?

"you don't have to mean it" - definitely refreshing as a change of pace, might be refreshing outside of this context as well. i wonder why keith isn't dropping lightweight tom waits albums all the time. does he not write enough songs? is it more fun to just strum sweet nothings on the patio is it boring without mick?

"out of control" - seriously, does keith enjoy backing up mick on these generic "i'm hot to trot!" shuffles?

da croupier, Thursday, 19 February 2015 00:41 (ten years ago)

"flip the switch" has a pretty hot riff

brimstead, Thursday, 19 February 2015 00:42 (ten years ago)

The instrumental credits on this album are crazy. Def a comparison point w/Time Out of Mind. There's a good song in "Might as Well Get Juiced" beneath Mick's keyboard fart noises -- I like his harmonica riff and the Dust Bros fuzz on the drums.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 19 February 2015 00:47 (ten years ago)

todd rundgren's bossa nova album came out around the same time

brimstead, Thursday, 19 February 2015 00:49 (ten years ago)

"Saint Of Me" - wikipedia sez keith didn't touch this, and i believe it - pop-polished but corny and vain, would believe it came from a mick solo album. genuinely disappointed they're not more prolific independently, wish they'd get into soundcloud or something.

"Might As Well Get Juiced" - definitely in the running for Funniest Opening To A Stones Song Ever. Worried this is what most of Mick's soundcloud stuff would sound like, as he chases bold new dimensions in sound with dave stewart and other people who like his money.

"Always Suffering" - wow i hope mick didn't sound this smarmy when trying to patch things up with jerry hall

da croupier, Thursday, 19 February 2015 00:58 (ten years ago)

"Too Tight" - i bet this is on a lot of veteran fans' Best Of The Later Stones Albums mixes because it's such an inoffensive bit of autopilot

"Thief In The Night" - god can you imagine if tom waits produced a keith solo album? that could be some starbucks gold. it'd probably be kind of thin, but i'd check it out. shit, i'd even check out one helmed by rick rubin.

"How Can I Stop" - shit, maybe like a traveling wilburys thing with tom and...oh god no, they'd let elvis costello in that, nevermind. but omg the relative enjoyability of keith's songs are kind of stunning

da croupier, Thursday, 19 February 2015 01:12 (ten years ago)

Keef was all over Waits' last album.

Like I said up thread, his songs are totally winning here. Too bad they're over the four-minute mark.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 19 February 2015 01:18 (ten years ago)

yeah that's part of why i brought waits up - that i wish one of his buds would light a fire under him to do his own thing more

da croupier, Thursday, 19 February 2015 01:21 (ten years ago)

In the boring red coffee table book he hoped that "How Can I Stop" would become as much a sleeper as "Thru and Thru."

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 19 February 2015 01:28 (ten years ago)

a post-Exile Stones non-singles poll would tickle my fancy.

piscesx, Thursday, 19 February 2015 01:38 (ten years ago)

I'd say post-"Mixed Emotions." Voodoo Lounge and A Bigger Bang have a lot of good stuff.
