GRINDCORE CLASSICS POLL: Repulsion vs Terrorizer

This is my favorite kind of grind - Repulsion's "Horrified" might just be one of my favorite death/grind albums*, as well as Terrorizer's World Downfall. But if you had to choose between the two classic albums (and why would you), which is supreme?

I'd also like this thread to serve a secondary purpose - what other classic grind in this vein do you prefer? not just grind in general, but sonically similar to these two albums? ie Nausea etc...

*yea yea it's a 'compilation' fuck you

I feel like the leads on the Repulsion album, squealy and insane as they are, really add a lot to the album, whereas Terrorizer works just fine without guitar solos.

bass is more prominent on the Repulsion album, which is always a plus, but it's not like David Vincent was any slouch...just didn't really feature much on that album.

Terrorizer have the edge on drums, obv....

songwriting, Terrorizer seem to be leaner at times and more focused in scope but Repulsion have that unhinged feel that make you feel like the wheels might come flying off at any moment, which I love.

lord...tough one.

Terrorizer for me. I like my grind tight.

playing these back to back right now. worse ways to spend a Sunday!

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Sunday, 15 February 2015 18:32 (ten years ago)

these drum fills on Terrorizer may swing my vote

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Sunday, 15 February 2015 18:37 (ten years ago)

instinct says repulsion, mostly cuz i heard it first & have spent more of my life with it. love the atmosphere of filth, chaos & violence.

contenderizer, Sunday, 15 February 2015 21:09 (ten years ago)

Terrorizer, man. When I got rid of all my Earache / death / thrash / grind stuff a few years back, World Downfall was one of the ten albums I kept.

Thanks to this thread, I just downloaded World Downfall from e music.

Always had a passing interest in this genre, going back to early DRI, Die Kreuzen's first and so on.

World Downfall is so fucking brutally good. So precise too.

My only gripe with this can be the vocals; any of you experts out there care to nominate any bands where the vocalist holds a tune. Oxymoronic maybe, but to give you a direction 7 Seconds 'The Crew' hinted at it (puts tin hat on as I know they were nowhere near grind); and surely that's not 30 odd years ago?

Repulsion, because it seems more no-fucks-given, and general influence on "the scene".

Dominique, Monday, 16 February 2015 18:10 (ten years ago)

Repulsion because they really didn't seem to have an idea what they were doing, exactly, and that is appealing to me.

yeah, they're just so flying off the rails. seeing them live in 2013 was fucking awesome.

don't listen to a lot of death/grind, so i don't have much to recommend, but i do like the first nasum LP. sound owes a little to both repulsion and terrorizer, though probably more the latter.

contenderizer, Tuesday, 17 February 2015 07:21 (ten years ago)

Love both of these records, but it's got to be Repulsion for me. So scabrous and raw.

I highly recommend Master's "Unreleased 1985 Album" if you like Repulsion; it starts off from a base of Venom/Slayer/etc and winds up in a pretty similar place to Repulsion. IIRC Master, Siege and Repulsion had pride of place on Napalm Death's "Scum" thankslist. Also there's a Master song called Terrorizer...

I love "World Downfall," of course! Nausea's "Crimes Against Humanity" is a somewhat forgotten album; they always seemed to lag behind other bands in terms of actually recording and releasing stuff but that record's combination of grindcore and weird, dank 1970s recording quality has made it a second-string favorite of mine.

Oh and guys, Fear Of God from Sweden. Go download the discography with Pneumatic Slaughter and all that stuff.

Fear Of God were from Switzerland.

Agree about Master though.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 17 February 2015 09:17 (ten years ago)

the Repulsion album sounds more and more horrifyingly awesome every time I listen to it.

World Downfall is so good but god, the Repulsion shit sounds like it's about to stab you through the solar plexus

side question, but why do so many grindcore bands seem to eventually write a riff tat sounds like the Inspector Gadget theme
