I was hoping that this Saint Petersburg, Russia outfit would be pushing the '93 'gaze boundaries.
They don't quite transcend but to my ears, it's a fine release and as a whole it's all present; melodies, ambient waves, distant vocals drowning in reverb a driving rhythm section.
It's addictive

Yeah I've been enjoying this

I have, too! When I isolate individual songs I like "Holy Forest" best, which is maybe one of the least shoegazey ones, but if I play the whole album I just happily get lost in the rush.

Good taste naming themselves after a Scott Cortez reference too.

The album seems to be titled "Everything Else Matters". Hope you don't mind if I change the thread title.

I like the track I heard, should seek out more. Playing with them in a couple of months, too.

*Blush*
thanks for that how's life. I'm not that great with words.

I agree, that the album's best heard as a whole, although the track that's doing it for me is 'Metamorphosis', closer on side A, but 'Holy Forest' the other standout for me.

The Live at Leeds thing looks promising

six months pass...

Was listening to this on Spotify after it showed up on the top 100 albums of the year list at Rate Your Music (I often scroll through that and play stuff I haven't heard).

I adore it! The group mines familiar territory, but unlike many of the band's peers, can go from loud, shimmering guitar to languid moments that are damn near synthpop and retains their identity.

I tried to buy a CD but that was nearly impossible as it was quite limited. The only place who had a CD was in the UK and would run me nearly $20 with shipping. Vinyl was even more expensive. I finally found something on Discogs that was affordable, a UK promo that set me back $12 and change.

i like it! more electronics, more vocal loops right?

François Pitchforkian (NickB), Friday, 26 February 2016 11:13 (nine years ago)

yeah they're gravitating more toward electronics (they're already working on the followup). i love this record so much and hope they tour the states behind it.

maura, Friday, 26 February 2016 21:48 (nine years ago)

Oh cool, I think I will like them more the more electronic they get. Will give this a listen (I don't have spotify so will see if they have it up on bandcamp or something).

I like Grandfeathered even more than the one that inspired this thread.
It's a lot louder but despite being less varied still expands on the band's sound.
Maybe it's because the loudness comes less from guitars than before?
