I miss MTV Europe as it meant we didn't get to hear what was popular all over mainland Europe. I suppose it did coincide with all the europop in the early 90s getting huge in the UK and that did annoy me at the time but it was more interesting than MTV UK was. Endless travis/ocs/stereophonics/Oasis etc/
Lots of songs I did hate but plenty I loved so lets post and talk about some of the songs you remember whether you liked them or not
Stakka Bo - Here We Go Again (awesome)http://youtu.be/9I5iugfTiIk

Yeah, Party Zone and Chillout Zone were the best shows on MTV, I watched them a lot before I was old enough actually go clubbing on weekends.

Was great finally hearing a lot of things that you read about in the music press. Seems a weird thing post-napster but it was really important back then. Much better than most radio except for the odd show.

What I miss most about MTV Europe is that it showed videos by artists who didn't sing in English. I distinctly remember videos by Eros Ramazotti and Die Toten Hosen being shown regularly in the '90s, for example. It's always boiled my piss a little bit that English language acts get a fair amount of play in non-English speaking countries, whereas non-English language acts face some kind of airplay barrier here.

Eros Ramazotti and Die Toten Hosen
they always won awards at the mtv europe awards

i remember am eros ramazotti video where the stage looked about the size of an oil rig. any idea what that was?

The two that stick out in my mind are the ones for 'Piu Bella Cosa' (which got a shitload of airplay) and 'Stella Gemella'!

In fact, weirdly MTV Europe used to show videos for songs well before they actually became hits in the UK. I remember seeing videos for No Doubt's 'Just A Girl' and 'Don't Speak' on MTV Europe long before those tracks took off in the UK. I don't particularly wanna bring this song up, but 'Breakfast At Tiffany's' by Deep Blue Something seemed to get the hell played out of it on MTV Europe long before it became a hit here.
― You’re being too simplistic and you’re insulting my poor heart (Turrican), Thursday, 19 February 2015 22:57 (ten years ago)
Just A Girl came out in the UK two years later than everywhere else. Sales-wise Germany has always been more important than the UK for a lot of international acts.
― Rainbow DAESH (ShariVari), Thursday, 19 February 2015 23:01 (ten years ago)
This just missed the tail end of the 90s but remains a standard:

― Rainbow DAESH (ShariVari), Thursday, 19 February 2015 23:04 (ten years ago)
'Just A Girl' was a hit in the UK upon re-release after 'Don't Speak' became a hit here. It came out in the US in late '95, and it was issued as a single here in '96 and only just barely made it into the Top 40. It was then re-released after 'Don't Speak' became a hit and made the Top 10.
No doubt that Germany is an important market though, even for UK bands. German fans tend to be very dedicated too, and tend to stick with a band.

for most of the 90s it was the only place metal bands remained huge
― Eric Burdon & War, On Drugs (Cosmic Slop), Thursday, 19 February 2015 23:56 (ten years ago)
True that. I remember I first heard about Korn not on MTV Europe but on one of the German-language channels(!)
― You’re being too simplistic and you’re insulting my poor heart (Turrican), Friday, 20 February 2015 00:44 (ten years ago)
im talking about the traditional metal not nu-metal or alternative metal.
― Eric Burdon & War, On Drugs (Cosmic Slop), Friday, 20 February 2015 00:46 (ten years ago)
still cant find that eros ramazzotti video i remember
― Eric Burdon & War, On Drugs (Cosmic Slop), Friday, 20 February 2015 18:49 (ten years ago)
Yeah, traditional metal especially, but that moment I saw footage of Korn in concert on a German-language channel was probably my first exposure to nu-metal. I can't recall the English media touching nu-metal until the late '90s, really!
― You’re being too simplistic and you’re insulting my poor heart (Turrican), Friday, 20 February 2015 22:25 (ten years ago)
Kerrang was the first to hype it! They invented the term around 94/95 when that first Korn album came out.. Vanessa Warwick on HB sadly loved Korn.
― Eric Burdon & War, On Drugs (Cosmic Slop), Friday, 20 February 2015 22:30 (ten years ago)
Yeah, but that was my first exposure to it! I did see the occasional Marilyn Manson video on MTV Europe circa the Antichrist Superstar period, mind, but I seem to remember more grunge than nu-metal on MTV Europe in 1994-1995. Nu-metal may have been getting hyped up in print, but I don't remember it really getting a great deal of play until channels like MTV2 and the Kerrang! channel appeared etc. You couldn't avoid it on the music channels in the UK in the late '90s/early '00s, really.
― You’re being too simplistic and you’re insulting my poor heart (Turrican), Friday, 20 February 2015 23:06 (ten years ago)
OMG thanks for posting that Aphex Twin video! There was this video I remember from back in the day and it was this desert scene with weird surreal stop motion stuff and I was looking everywhere for it and convinced it was for some song in the 80s, but now I'm pretty sure it was this one. Nice! Unless someone can think of a similar video done earlier....

VH-1 UK started in 1994, I think... and MTV2 UK started a couple of years after that. I can't remember the exact year, but I seem to remember it being late '90s.
― You’re being too simplistic and you’re insulting my poor heart (Turrican), Saturday, 21 February 2015 00:04 (ten years ago)
I never saw the show the night that ray cokes got sacked for. Not sure what happened there either. Loved that show
Davina McCall got her start on MTV Europe, didn't she? I seem to remember a tense interview between her and James Dean Bradfield around the time of the Manics' Everything Must Go.
Oh shit, how could I forget Pip Dann?
― You’re being too simplistic and you’re insulting my poor heart (Turrican), Saturday, 21 February 2015 00:07 (ten years ago)
I wasn't aware that Ray Cokes got sacked, I always assumed he'd left! I do remember him taking the piss out of VH-1 UK on MTV Europe when that channel first launched, though!

Who was the (dutch?) girl who presented Partyzone?
Vanessa Warwick presented Headbangers Ball but then nu-metal and alt-metal hit hard and they decided they needed a new younger presenter and show. They called it Super Rock and brought in a german model who didn't know much about metal and it went down really badly.
Did 120 mins or headbangers ball or YO! MTV Raps ever show the american versions or was it always the euro ones?
― Eric Burdon & War, On Drugs (Cosmic Slop), Saturday, 21 February 2015 00:19 (ten years ago)
Simone something was the partyzone presenter I think?
they always played that awesome ken ishii video
― Eric Burdon & War, On Drugs (Cosmic Slop), Saturday, 21 February 2015 00:20 (ten years ago)
I seem to remember YO! MTV Raps always being an American version, I don't think they ever made a European edition of that show did they? I always assumed MTV Europe just used to broadcast the same as they did in the US with that show. I have a distinct memory of The Fugees being guest presenters on it circa The Score.

Every time I check what's on MTV these days it's usually a complete load of bollocks. It's a very, very, very pale shadow of the channel it once was, that's for sure.
In fact, so is VH-1, actually. I preferred VH-1 UK when it first started, when it actually had presenters and interesting shows.
― You’re being too simplistic and you’re insulting my poor heart (Turrican), Saturday, 21 February 2015 01:00 (ten years ago)
I hated that david erm hepworth? bloke. the guy who gushed over It Bites (terrible band)
― Eric Burdon & War, On Drugs (Cosmic Slop), Saturday, 21 February 2015 01:02 (ten years ago)
I seem to remember David Hepworth & Mark Ellen (both formerly of Q Magazine), Bob Mills, Clare Grogan, Richard Jobson(!)... I'm sure there were a few folks from MTV Europe who moved over to VH-1 UK while it still had presenters... seem to remember Bob Harris on there as well? None of 'em were as likeable as the presenters on MTV Europe (especially Hepworth!), but I definitely preferred that format rather than just back-to-back videos.

i didnt mind the others it was the hepworth guy annoyed me
― Eric Burdon & War, On Drugs (Cosmic Slop), Saturday, 21 February 2015 01:22 (ten years ago)
hepworth was smug and i dunno something rich upper middle class about him that rubbed me up the wrong way.
― Eric Burdon & War, On Drugs (Cosmic Slop), Saturday, 21 February 2015 01:23 (ten years ago)
Oh yeah, Hepworth definitely came across as smug on-screen, probably even moreso than he comes across in print.
