Focusing on stuff that isn't lush or orchestral-sounding. Preferably stuff that's creepier sounding than "Young Bride" by Midlake or "Disarm" by Smashing Pumpkins within rock or hiphop or pop or jazz or whatever. "Monkey Gone to Heaven" is slightly more on the right track. "Piggies" is even closer, but I know there's way better examples than these.
