I remember hearing them a while ago and dismissing them as generic math-rock but that song's pretty good!
― ultros ultros-ghali, Wednesday, 4 March 2015 20:07 (ten years ago)
Ooh, I was actually planning on making a thread for their new album, had the title in my head and all.
I'm stopping myself from listening to the stream because I want a higher quality audio release but it sounds very good indeed.
Their last album THE was my favorite album of 2013, and probably my most successful musical missionary effort, since quite a lot of people I gave it to agreed. Fully formed debut, gorgeous details revealing themselves through repeat listens. While waiting for the new album I suggest listening to it if you're unfamiliar with the group. Their music is on Spotify http://open.spotify.com/album/3OnXkM3qNaABUR3vgb4i5O

They're using up all the good album titles.

maybe the next one will be a passive verb

I like them but my Japanese girlfriend absolutely hates them, so they're banned from our household. She listens to different stuff like B'z, Mr.Children, Glay, Utada Hikaru, etc., though.
― F♯ A♯ (∞), Wednesday, 4 March 2015 21:14 (ten years ago)
dumb name but these two songs are cool
― Dinsdale, Wednesday, 4 March 2015 22:27 (ten years ago)
They're unlikely to hire a permanent new drummer anytime soon http://beehy.pe/interview-tricot-japan/
but listening to it that mix of drummers doesn't really define the album in any way. The woman they brought on live tours last year did a great job: http://youtu.be/hW_ayjXr1Lk
― abcfsk, Thursday, 5 March 2015 08:52 (ten years ago)
Have they recorded the final song in that show, Matsuri? I like that one.
― jmm, Thursday, 5 March 2015 13:01 (ten years ago)

Do these five drummers cancel each other out then? :-)
Get a Don Caballero vibe from the initial post.
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 8 March 2015 12:50 (ten years ago)
They took turns to play a song then all five did a bit of a drum circle thing in the middle of one track.

I'm really digging this album. Suppose I need to go and get their other stuff, eh?
― ultros ultros-ghali, Thursday, 9 April 2015 19:28 (ten years ago)
Actually, I prefer their older stuff.
If I had to rank their releases:
1. 小学生と宇宙 (School Children and The Cosmo)2. 爆裂パニエさん (Bakuretsu Tricot-san)3. T H E4. A N D5. バキューン ("Bakyuun")
A N D is still pretty cool, though
― F♯ A♯ (∞), Thursday, 9 April 2015 19:55 (ten years ago)
Typo up there, sorry.
2 is 爆裂トリコさん if you're trying to find it online
― F♯ A♯ (∞), Thursday, 9 April 2015 19:58 (ten years ago)
Xp Yes. This new album, good as it is, is not the absolute revelation and aotd candidate that was 'THE', a class of its own.

Lot's of J Math (sorry) seems much less dissonant and overall prettier than it's western counterpart, I really like the bands that lean on the Piano as a central instrument like Atlantis Airport or Haisuinonasa

will this be the rock album that finally unites ILM
― bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Thursday, 6 February 2020 00:40 (five years ago)
First half is great, but it got a bit too Math in the second half and lost me. (Rock isn’t generally my thing though. I was coming at this as a J Pop fan and knew nothing about the band hitherto.)
― Jeff W, Thursday, 6 February 2020 01:02 (five years ago)
I wrote a little bit more about the album.
― but also fuck you (unperson), Tuesday, 11 February 2020 16:31 (five years ago)
Can't wait to dig into this. Post THE I felt they struggled to reach those old heights but the singles for this album have been super promising and made me a born again fan.

I love this record.
― TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 13 February 2020 01:07 (five years ago)
I really liked their Fender-y light sound on the early stuff - the newer material is thicker and I can't lose myself in the interplay as much. I reckon it will improve once I've listened more, but unlike their previous albums this one's not on Bandcamp so I can't buy it very easily.
― an incoherent crustacean (MatthewK), Thursday, 13 February 2020 01:18 (five years ago)
Yeah, it's ironic that signing to a bigger label has likely improved their status in Japan, but handicapped them w/r/t growing their US audience. (The new record is on US Spotify, though.)

― Roz, Thursday, 28 May 2020 13:13 (five years ago)
Haven't really kept up with them but have been getting a vague whiff of RHCP from the new one which is kind of interfering with my pleasure receptors
― Boris the Spreader (NickB), Thursday, 28 May 2020 14:09 (five years ago)
late pass here but this is currently blowing my mind. agree with nickb in that the bass player reminds me a lot of flea. but that's a plus, imo.

The two Tricot albums are my two favourites of this year so far. I have a theory that most bands peak with their 4th and 5th albums.
― aphoristical, Sunday, 25 October 2020 20:30 (four years ago)
holy shit what a great song, recaptures the buzz I got from T H E. Is Yoshida a new drummer? I thought they'd been using machines and session players on recent stuff.

― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 24 December 2020 16:38 (four years ago)
I need to listen to this one again. I only gave it one chance and it didn't hit me the way the one from January/February did, so I moved on to other things.
― but also fuck you (unperson), Thursday, 24 December 2020 19:10 (four years ago)
I would take the two Tricot albums over the two Swift albums as my favourite pair of albums of the year, but maybe that's because Evermore hasn't clicked for me yet.
