it never really occurs to me that there are three ~15 minute tracks on here

Love this album so very much.

I love the way Miles prowls round Jimi on Mademoiselle Mabry; sizing him up, playing with him, gradually pulling The Wind Cries Mary to pieces.

Aren't some of the track times extended beyond the original? 56:30 seems awfully long for a single LP.

don't know in this case, but some of those 70's era miles lps have 60+ minutes on them (based on label timings, anyway)

it's been a long time since i read the liner notes - think i remember something marveling at how much they crammed in?

Title track all the way.

Blood On The Knobs, Saturday, 18 April 2015 23:14 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, title track. I really like the way Tony plays on that one, a mixture of the minimalism of "Silent Way" and the maximalism of "Miles In The Sky"

I think I prefer the Herbie tracks to the Chick tracks, but even with that, I have no idea how to vote here.

What a great album.

Didn't expect such a blowout, even though I voted for it.

austinato (Austin), Tuesday, 30 June 2015 20:29 (nine years ago) link

It has always been my fave.

xelab, Tuesday, 30 June 2015 20:39 (nine years ago) link

i think having felon brun as the leadoff track has always made me rate this lower than i really feel, since i actually kind of am not fond of the bumpy electric piano/bass drum combo there

the solo sections (i.e. almost the entire record) - and the band just as much during them - on this are so bonkers, but you sorta can't even tell sandwiched as it is between the other quintet records and iasw/bitches brew

If you are not a drummer it’s hard to imagine just how radical Tony’s drumming is. Traditionally, the drummer keeps the beat. In this band, that time-keeping function is given over to the bass. Tony’s drums are a total improvisation based on ????? That’s the thing—Tony is not playing rhythms, he is actually using the drums as a melodic instrument, sounding out patterns.

lol

a total improvisation based on ?????

Favorite Miles album. Missed the poll but this is pretty close to how I'd rank them, maybe Filles above Petits Machins.

Mademoiselle Mabry is so incredible, I love the way it seems like it's always building to something and about to blow, but never does.

Like there are a couple of moments where Tony starts going into a full gospel 6/8, but then quickly drops out of it again.

"The album title refers in part to Kilimanjaro African Coffee, a company in which Davis had made a financial investment.."

I also didn't know that Mademoiselle Mabry was a tribute to Betty Davis. Duh... she is on the cover and they had just married.

haven't listened to Miles for ages but this 'un always sounds fresh, probably because I underrated it in the past

Mademoiselle Mabry might be my favorite Miles composition. It occurs to me now that it has some echoes of Nefertiti, a Shorter composition, in that it involves improvising over a repeating melodic/rhythmic idea (in the keyboard especially) and not just a repeating set of chord changes.

How did I not realize that Mademoiselle Mabry is based on The Wind Cries Mary? It's so obvious now.

never put this together, you're right, it seems so obvious now !

The song "Mademoiselle Mabry (Miss Mabry)", while credited to Davis, is actually Gil Evans' reworking of "The Wind Cries Mary" by Jimi Hendrix (Davis and Evans had met with Hendrix several times to exchange ideas).[6]:271 At the same time, some portions of the song resemble Mann, Weil, Leiber and Stoller's "On Broadway".[5]:52

Wasn't Jimi an old flame of Betty's? To me the track fells like Miles prowling round him, checking him out, pulling his song apart to find out what's in there.
