okay if we're gonna do this:
as inspired by conversation here: The J0rdan S. listening club
the idea: seeking to enrich Tim's musical worldview and perhaps edify or entertain the rest of us with his reactions, this thread is for suggesting music. this thread is mainly for people that know and respect or disrespect Tim's musical taste and want to share music w/ him in a friendly environment, so only be condescending if you reasonably believe it will come across as amusing to third party observers, and try to think of the audience and context and not just use this as an opportunity to champion your usual hobbyhorses regardless.
the rules: Tim has consented to listen to 1 album every 2 weeks as decided by volunteers -- simply note in this thread if you'd like to participate and he'll attend to you in order.

Have you ever given The Fall a try, Tim? "Slates" is a good place to start, I reckon.
― tayto fan (Michael B), Friday, 17 April 2015 13:40 (ten years ago)
Probably by me tbh. It's a very personal record for me.
― The Reverend, Friday, 17 April 2015 13:43 (ten years ago)
only albums? boo

One that despite my jumping in here like this, I almost feel weird sharing if I stop to think about it.
self xp
― The Reverend, Friday, 17 April 2015 13:45 (ten years ago)
Ronan you can nominate tracks / mixes etc. But only you.
Of The Fall I have This Nation's Saving Grace which I like but haven't listened to enough and I am vaguely aware is a "classic" and The Infotainment Scam which I got much more into and became quite personally invested in? I am open to the prospect that this is ass-backwards. If you want to nominate a Fall record you may but remember you only get one nomination.
― Tim F, Friday, 17 April 2015 13:48 (ten years ago)
Oh wow this Flora Purim album commences in very exciting fashion.
I will sit with this a bit though so I can do it justice.
― Tim F, Friday, 17 April 2015 13:52 (ten years ago)

I'll nominate Slates. The best early Fall record with Mark E Smith on fire lyrically.
― tayto fan (Michael B), Friday, 17 April 2015 14:02 (ten years ago)
Okay if your taking suggestions and haven't heard it, I'd love to hear your thoughts on the "Smokey" album by Smokey Robinson
― Heez, Friday, 17 April 2015 14:10 (ten years ago)
i'm not sure i can think of any way i can expand tim's musical knowledge! is there even an album i consider essential that i don't think he's heard...
― lex pretend, Friday, 17 April 2015 14:26 (ten years ago)

― deej loaf (D-40), Friday, 17 April 2015 14:43 (ten years ago)

right i promise not to wreck this thread with youtubes - i'll be selective - for starters, you must know this one, or do you? maybe the best house record ever - at least for the last year or two this is my feeling.

I love this album (Flora Purim).
I do not have any meaningful frames of reference for latin jazz fusion but/so in its odd mixture of languidness and tense frenetic nervousness it weirdly reminds me of The Royal Scam.
"Why I'm Alone" is such a beautiful closer, I love the percussion whisking across the endless summer lawns of Flora's regret.
More thoughts to follow.
― Tim F, Tuesday, 28 April 2015 12:46 (ten years ago)
I love the percussion whisking across the endless summer lawns of Flora's regret.
nb. maybe I just mean that it sounds like a sprinkler but I prefer the more melodramatic reading.
― Tim F, Tuesday, 28 April 2015 13:01 (ten years ago)
Still listening to this. I love Flora's outer vocals ("Five-Four"!) but also fake-plush fusionism of the music, esp. the middle stretch of soft jazz-pop on "Walking Away" and "I Don't Know".
What else should I check like this?
― Tim F, Tuesday, 5 May 2015 13:17 (ten years ago)
I like-not-love The Fall's Slates, at least so far. I feel like maybe the issue here is that the songs seem just on the verge of becoming really compelling rhythmically but never quite do, it just kinda chugs away in this kind a saurkrockabilly fashion with Mark snarling on top. I think if it either went closer to some kind of rhythmic trance (in any style that goes for that) I'd probably more fascinated by it? It's certainly fun though.
― Tim F, Monday, 18 May 2015 12:21 (ten years ago)
Lol based on that I ws just abt to recommend This Nation's Saving Grace and The Infotainment Scan before I checked upthread. You might like Middle Class Revolt tho, followup to IS
― sonic thedgehod (albvivertine), Monday, 18 May 2015 12:26 (ten years ago)
Yeah I enjoy those albums more than I enjoy this but then I've spent more time with them obv, especially Infotainment Scam. Should check Middle Class Revolt.

I couldn't find a copy of Smokey anywhere :-(
But I did find a copy of Quiet Storm and have been listening the hell out of it, so maybe will write about that instead.
― Tim F, Monday, 6 July 2015 06:26 (nine years ago)
This sounds interesting but seems like Tim didnt go through with it.
― ✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 6 July 2015 06:44 (nine years ago)
I'm 4th in line but I haven't even come up with a suggestion yet because I know this is going to be a very slow moving exercise.
Someone should start a version of this thread for me, because I'm unemployed right now and have plenty of time to listen to all yr records.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 6 July 2015 06:49 (nine years ago)
I got stuck on the not being able to source the required listening material (though working sixty hour weeks is not irrelevant).

Hehe I'm just coming back from one of my bars and one chill client asked for three different Bill Withers songs. Always makes me happy to queue songs for the clients who ask for something unexpected but cool.
― ✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 25 November 2015 06:31 (nine years ago)
i believe tim will be familiar with that track from the excellent eskimo vol. 2 mix
― the late great, Wednesday, 25 November 2015 07:43 (nine years ago)
Love this song but I don't actually have eskimo vol. 2! Those comps are very hard to find. I do have Vol. 3 (and Serie Noire Vol. 2 and the first Culture Club comp and some later comps) but never stumbled across vol. 1 or 2 or Summermadnessaftersun or whatever it's called.
― Tim F, Wednesday, 25 November 2015 22:22 (nine years ago)
eskimo volume 2 is so good. now that i think of it im sort of half-worried that i might have it sitting in a stack of records in my parents house (thousands of miles away) having never returned it to a friend of mine who i borrowed it from circa 2008.

start with Go Forth and then move on to Let's Stay Friends
― gr8080, Tuesday, 27 September 2016 13:02 (eight years ago)
It struck me last night that this is a very Tim F album. I may be wrong.

― Jeff W, Friday, 28 October 2016 18:29 (eight years ago)
this album is very ILM, at least
― boxedjoy, Friday, 28 October 2016 23:35 (eight years ago)
i sense that bijou herbacious neo-soul jazzy vibes from oz have crossed some kind of rubicon this year, or are about to. i can imagine the widening yuppie hegemony, brit empire hand-me-down snobbery, ghastly intensity of the pioneering cafe culture, horrible trite fusion cuisine etc but what else do you have to tell me about it
― r|t|c, Sunday, 25 December 2016 10:34 (eight years ago)
Do you mean, like, Hiatus Kaiyote?
― Tim F, Sunday, 25 December 2016 20:54 (eight years ago)
yeah, but the wave since them. like 30/70 collective, jordan rakei, wallace gollan
maybe also relevant is a post-disclosure zero7 soulection 90s electronica thing with idk flume and stuff?
i'm soft for some of it in undemanding private but was mainly just wondering about irl corroboration if any
― r|t|c, Sunday, 25 December 2016 21:30 (eight years ago)
rakei is usually like jamie woon without the edge (oof) but recently i've been jamming this excursion of his under an alias https://youtu.be/FwZX1A7RTvQ

― octobeard, Monday, 26 December 2016 20:09 (eight years ago)
xpost this all sounds like stuff that would be very big (not actually big, but you know) here, but apart from 30/70 Collective's "The Strut" and "Space" (good fake Quadron, that last one) (and Flume obv) I'm not familiar with any of it. Not out of any particular distaste but it's an infrastructure I'm not plugged into.
That said I could make some educated guesses about that infrastructure: modern funk/soul shows on 3RRR, live performances at low-key outside festivals at the Coburg Velodrome and Catani Gardens (possibly untrue but it feels correct), sales through Northside Records, everyone quietly wondering just how much they need to normalise their post-dilla sound in order to make a real splash.
And yes, also all those negative connotations but I'm sufficiently shallow upper middle class myself now that it doesn't bother me so much as demand too little while not being so close to my aesthetic pleasure centres as to be something I actively seek out for comfort. But it's not like there's anything else which seems more exciting right now.
