this record rules. indie rock band with kinda perfectly serrated vocals. they're on saddle creek?

― insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Friday, 1 May 2015 02:03 (ten years ago)
On this latest listen to "Hoseshoe Crabs" I realized her voice (and vocal melodies) also remind me a bit of Vedder
― fuck me, archipelago (Simon H.), Monday, 4 May 2015 17:17 (ten years ago)
I don't really see the Long Winters in it (but agree there could happily be more Long Winters in music, I miss em) but I'm sure when I give a listen next I won't be able to not think about that filter.
― Fatalist AmandaPalmistry (irrational), Monday, 4 May 2015 19:03 (ten years ago)
i guess i just sort of hear it in the song structures, they're sort of quietly odd even as they function as straightforward indie rock
― insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Monday, 4 May 2015 19:38 (ten years ago)
yes, quietly odd. the verse melodies in particular evoke When I Pretend to Fall, which is a good thing for me.

I really can't get enough of the sounds on this album, but the lyrics don't always grab me, e.g. on 'Waitress.' but that's fine. it's still really good.

― Mr. Murphy in the wine bar. (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 25 May 2015 00:00 (nine years ago)
I like this album a lot, too. "Serrated" is a great description of the singer's voice. At first I thought her voice was all this band had going for it, but I'm starting to like the guitar playing on this too. The writing, to me, seems almost there, to the point were I think their next album could be truly great.
I will admit that, by the end of the album, the Rilo Kiley affectations (loud shout-y part followed by a single very quiet word) started to grate on me a little. Still, a very interesting band, I think. Anyone heard any of their earlier stuff? How does it rate?
― Wimmels, Tuesday, 26 May 2015 16:00 (nine years ago)
i think she's just very very good at telescoping in on small moments. she shows but doesn't tell. almost nothing happens in "waitress" and what does happen is probably meaningless but the way the protagonist processes the dread of being recognized is just very very rich. also "i call you enemy cause I’m afraid of what you could call me / the world’s gotten so small and embarrassing" is such a great line
― insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Tuesday, 26 May 2015 17:45 (nine years ago)
the songs on here that are basically straight biographies of actual people are really impressive imo, bc she inhabits their perspective so deeply. from "horseshoe crabs," about jackson c. frank:
woke from the dream and i was oldstaring at the asscrack of dawnwalk these streets up and downlooking for paul simonall i found was myself lost in timei tried singing my songs but i lost my mind
― insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Tuesday, 26 May 2015 17:49 (nine years ago)
Anyone heard any of their earlier stuff? How does it rate?
get disowned is a great record but the songs are way more discursive, and as you get further back into the hop along, queen ansleis stuff the songs get more and more fractured. i really think everything came together on painted shut
― insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Tuesday, 26 May 2015 17:52 (nine years ago)
I had avoided this bc I hate pretty much everything Ian Cohen reviews positively but it's pretty good. Makes me think of Tanya Donnelly bands for some reason.

― insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Wednesday, 8 July 2015 17:07 (nine years ago)
Oh. Maybe I'm confused because Cohen wrote the blurb for the Overlooked Records feature. I had slotted Hop Along with the nu-emo/pop-punk stuff that seems to be Cohen's beat.

i'm not sure if there's a run as great as the first three songs on painted shut but it might be more consistent? "look of love" is kind of astounding
― lowercase (eric), Monday, 2 April 2018 15:00 (seven years ago)
album feels less like a step forward from painted shut than a step sideways but i'm not complaining
― flamenco drop (BradNelson), Monday, 2 April 2018 15:00 (seven years ago)
There's a loose, session-y vibe to these songs that reallllllly flatters her. Like "Fox in Motion" and "One That Suits Me" make me thing she could hit the park out of a Memphis album if she wanted to
― Evan R, Monday, 2 April 2018 15:03 (seven years ago)
for sure, she's so good at gliding through the cracks in the music (and in her voice), and that'll probably clarify itself even more when less compressed audio is available
maybe i wish there were more moments of melodic drift like on "what the writer meant"
― lowercase (eric), Monday, 2 April 2018 15:08 (seven years ago)
that's probably my favorite song but honestly every song has at least a moment or two that knocks the breath out of me
― Evan R, Monday, 2 April 2018 15:13 (seven years ago)
fox in motion -> one that suits me -> what the writer meant
^^^ that's the stuff
― flamenco drop (BradNelson), Monday, 2 April 2018 15:15 (seven years ago)
That's the stretch to beat. Like, on any album this year. Fucking remarkable.
― Evan R, Monday, 2 April 2018 15:18 (seven years ago)
the guitar playing is on another level this time
― lowercase (eric), Monday, 2 April 2018 15:23 (seven years ago)
First three tracks on this are nice but once the album hits "Not Abel" it takes off and doesn't look back, just one high after another. Wasn't expecting to get Nina Nastasia vibes from this but some of those strings are transcendent
― Evan R, Monday, 2 April 2018 18:07 (seven years ago)
this is a good album but going forward anyone who comments on her voice should be obligated to make a similar comment about the equally noteworthy dude of pretty much any indie rock dude because for christ's sake, you'd think she sounded like diamanda galas instead of a slightly more rough jenny lewis
― aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Friday, 6 April 2018 15:38 (seven years ago)
I.....do not think the average indie rock vocalist, male or female, is equally noteworthy/distinctive, and I listen to an embarrassing amount of contemporary indie rock. it's not just the sound of her voice, it's her phrasings and lyrics, too.
― Simon H., Friday, 6 April 2018 15:45 (seven years ago)
like is it sexist more generally that male voices don't receive as much scrutiny, yeah, but I don't know how you can write about these guys and not bring up the subject

― flopson, Friday, 6 April 2018 18:43 (seven years ago)
although tbh the best thing i've _read_ about it is the word 'serrated' in the op of this thread
― flopson, Friday, 6 April 2018 18:47 (seven years ago)
not ready to say whether this is better than painted shut, but it's certainly excellent, some curveball productions and the band has improved to the point that frances can save her more dramatic vocals for the most emotional parts of the song. tho i do kind of miss her softLOUDsoft acrobatics.

Ums it's not overt but I was definitely hearing it at some point midway through the album.
― Evan, Sunday, 8 April 2018 13:46 (seven years ago)
still digesting this. the singles really pop in the context of the album. i was a little underwhelmed with How Simple when it first came out, but now I really appreciate the melody and i've been singing it to myself since listening to the album this morning. Prior Things is a badass closing song that's gonna kill live, and it's the only song on the record that has a "holy shit" vocal moment like the "common kind" refrain in Waitress" or the chorus of The Knock.

this new Frances Quinlan album is beautiful
feels like the opposite of Joanna Newsom's work post-Mender, where by singing more "nicely" she lost (imho) a lot of her transcendental forceQuinlan's never sounded "better," in scare-quotes, but the prettiness of the way she's singing gives these songs a tenderness and openness i appreciate a lot

In my 15-odd years of semi-lurking and occasional content-free posting, one of the most consistently rewarding parts of visiting this site is getting to see Brad's enthusiasm and passion for music. So many bands/songs that I probably wouldn't have given a second thought to that have become mandatory listens based on the Brad stamp of approval. :)
Anyway, this record is the latest. "Texas Funeral" in particular. Holy shit. But yeah, also in general, just wanted to say thanks to Brad for being the best stranger on the internet.
