if this album is anything like the museum of broken relationships, i'm p scared
― surm, Tuesday, 19 May 2015 21:26 (nine years ago) link
fun fact: i was playing American Thighs way too loud at 2am one recent evening (obviously this is one of the best albums ever recorded.) next morning i get an email from my downstairs neighbor that reads "PLEASE. i love Veruca Salt too. just not at 2 in the morning."
that is all.

i'm p scared
...of how much it's going to melt your face?
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 19 May 2015 21:28 (nine years ago) link
:( no, of how bad lyrics can possibly be, amongst other things
― surm, Tuesday, 19 May 2015 21:29 (nine years ago) link
tbh I was too busy last year reveling in how great "Broken Relationships" and "It's Holy" sounded to even dig up the lyrics. But I'm not a lyrics person to begin with.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 19 May 2015 21:33 (nine years ago) link
i could not even get through Broken Relationships. even sound-wise, just couldn't do it. i'll give It's Holy a try.

It's weird that "Broken Relationships" seems to be the villain, because it's the one track out of the 4 new ones I've heard that I think sounds the most like anything on American Thighs.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 19 May 2015 21:43 (nine years ago) link
well that's a bad sign for me, i guess. but we'll see.

so stoked about this! i liked "broken relationships" a lot, tho i think it ended kind of abruptly/could've been longer. i LOVE "it's holy" because it's the "nina and louise joyfully reunite" song i had been waiting so many years for (but i'm betting you won't like the lyrics surm, it's v. earnest).
i'm curious about track 2 because nina had a b-side on her first solo album called "black and blonde" that came off like a veiled snipe at louise. the phrase seems to be meaningful to both of them since they use it again in "it's holy," so probably it's a new song and not a remake of the old one?

In the garden of rejection, the broken people goThere's a hook where you can hang your heartFrame it on the wall and let it goHalalala let it go
i think that's where i stopped listening.

aww this version of "black and blonde" IS the one off nina's solo album, but they rewrote all the lyrics that ppl interpreted as being anti-louise <3 <3

this is really good!

The last track, Alternica, is cornball city. Is there a rating scale for cheese that I could apply here?

It's possible this may turn out to be my favorite album of theirs.

i preferred the chorus of the original "Black & Blonde" but then again I stan hard for that first Nina solo record, it's terrific, surprised she didn't end up doing country after it.
A couple of great keepers on this, at least ("Laughing in the Sugar Bowl", "Come Clean Dark Thing", "Triage"), but it really just makes me want to listen to "American Thighs" again. Which I did, and it still kicks ass.

Solo Nina is abysmal. I'm glad she had at least one fan, though.
― Johnny Fever, Sunday, 2 August 2015 00:41 (nine years ago) link
One is about right. Paid an ungodly amount for it on import when it came out and six months later it was everywhere for one-tenth the price. The second album is awful AND boring though.

I have Nina's solo debut, but haven't listened to it in 15 years. Didn't even realize she made a follow-up.

solo nina has a fan in me. really really crazy about the tune "Now I can die"…then she became involved in the lamentable "hushed folkie rendition of gangsta classic" movement briefly the rage in the early file-sharing epoch…
