Who do you like on the cabaret scene?

I've been to several Maude Maggart shows and she's my favorite. Her voice is warm, she understands how to do intimacy, and her banter is unpredictable.

Andrea Marcovicci has a great presence, looks very nice for her age, and tells funny and engaging stories - but to be honest I don't care for her voice, which sounds erratic to me.

Christine Ebersole has a nice strong voice, but the one show of hers I saw felt over-scripted and her song choices were odd.

This could be my least successful thread since "Vikki Carr: POX"

Don't know much about the Cabaret Scene per se. Do like some singers who appear in that world but who are also either jazz singers or singers with jazz acts or jazz bands or have some connection to the jazz world, such as Annie Ross or Jessica Molaskey, John Pizzarelli's wife. Or this new singer Gabrielle Stravelli, who I stumbled across on youtube about a month ago. I tried to go to her regular brunch gig, but the restaurant went out of business that very day!

Or piano player/vocalist Daryl Sherman, who will be appearing with a really good trio at Kitano in a few weeks.

Or Carol Fredette, who I've only seen once sitting in at someone else's gig but she knocked the ball out of the park with the one tune she sang.

I think it's totally fair to include those kinds of singers. Who's to say where to draw the line between cabaret & jazz, pop & cabaret, or whatever. It all overlaps. If it's a small room, the singer talks between songs, and there's a drink minimum, it's cabaret to me.

One performer who thoroughly wowed me in her cabaret show was Petula Clark. She was in strong voice, she was funny and snarky, she sang in different languages, and she played piano at one point.

I enjoyed Astrud Gilberto also, who did some bossa nova hits plus some lightweight but not bad original material. But I don't think she comes to the US very often.

Thanks, just didn't want to mess up your thread if you had a different idea.

That Pet Clark show sounds cool. Would go see. Hard to check her itinerary though, her website is terrible.

I only ever heard this lady on the radio, but just found this video of her at the Metropolitan Room with Russell Malone and some stalwarts from Annie Ross's band. Libby York:

One more. Hilary Kole.

If you ever go to the Metropolitan Room to see Annie Ross, be warned that she can be a little moody after the show, so don't overstay your welcome on the receiving line.

Justin Hayford, here in Chicago, usually plays dud songs by famous songwriters - justly or unjustly lesser known songs. He has a dry, detached style, kind of like Blossom Dearie, and puts on a good show.

six years pass...

This spring 54 Below is presenting (separately) Lorna Luft, Marilyn Maye, and Lainie Kazan. Anyone ever seen any of these ladies?

I saw Lainie Kazan shortly before the pandemic but she had laryngitis and so only sang about three songs, telling stories the rest of the time. But it was still great! I'd consider going back to hear a full set from her.
