there could be a house band. i picture lots of percussionists. kinda want the indigo girls to sing "jack straw". and i always think of who would be the perfect angelic vocal choir/group to do "i know you rider". obviously a bluegrass group would be best. or a gospel group. would it be too gimmicky to have miley duet with someone on "tennessee jed"? i think she could really sell the black my eye and kick my dog line. which is kinda my favorite Dead line of all time. because i love talking dogs. who is gonna kill that guitar solo on "tennessee jed" though? love that thing. really want someone who can belt out "ramble on rose". everyone would be on stage for the epic closing "morning dew" obviously. and maybe a great jazz pianist and their group doing the prelude into "morning dew".

would like it to be jam band free. unless you are an allman brother.

i ain't clicking on that.

i always think how beautiful it would be to hear a big band with big voices and big arrangements. just big all around. i dunno, maybe not miley.

Nearest thing I know to a big band Dead covers band is the David Murray Octet 'Dark Star' alb - it's a bit too heavy on the Weir songs (Bob turns up on a track), but their version of Dark Star itself is v. lush (see also the Dark Star/Love Supreme mash up by the Henry Kaiser Band).

You know if this ever happened it would involved pieces or all Phish. Pretty much constitutionally required. The closest we may ever get to a jam-band free tribute to the Dead is "Deadicated," which is one of the most difinitively diverse of all those '90s comps.

never heard the murray before. listened a little on youtube. i sometimes have a problem with modern digi-brassiness. the songs are strong though and i think they should be american standards in multiple genres. i love good country/bluegrass covers. wish more BIG country people would cover them. and give them the deluxe treatment. there is lots of stuff like this out there:

actually, a big country salute to the dead at the opry would be ideal!

i like the idea of the homely and homespun taking back the night from the jammers. bluegrass caves in tennessee kinda an idea underground rock setting.

two years pass...

Increasingly thinking this was the best the Dead ever sounded. Maybe it's a cheat because it's select performances from an entire tour vs individual live shows, but I don't think the band ever hit a better balance of loose-tight, Jerry's voice never sounded better, wall-to-wall great songs, etc.

There's a cover act called The Golden Road who I caught in town a few months ago, their thing is doing Europe 72. It was a fun show! Wayne Horvitz sat in in the role of Pigpen. This YT from a couple years back gives a flavor: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ndMff31xx40
