I still remember hearing Sandman for the first time. Humble brag, but I've been a Metallica fan since the Summer of '86. We'd heard all the rumors and read RIP magazine that this new album was going to be different. Scared to death that they were going to turn into Winger.

Listened to the tape in the parking lot of the shopping center where I bought it. Buddy and I just looked at each other. "Not bad. At least it's not Winger."

Still get a kick out of it now that I only hear it occasionally. Even Tom Leykis couldn't ruin this song for me.

Also enjoy this poll kicking off with it because it's a helluva album intro (James wanted "Holier Than Thou" to start the record.)

And as you can see, it was awarded exactly 100 points. All the other songs below it were in the double-digits.

I remember hearing it for the first time at summer camp. We were all gathered around a boombox playing 98 Rock. To me, it was too corny to be Metallica. "What was this, the new Megadeth song or something?" And then weirdly, the new Megadeth song (from Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey) had a "Now I lay me down to sleep..." line in it.

I wish I could remember the grammatical term for swapping around the subject, metal style, to give you master of puppets vs. puppet master. Makes everything more metal. There's a baby store by here called Cradles of Distinction.

One of the Justice tracks I didn't end up voting for. I love it in context of the hour-long riff fest, but as a stand-alone song it plods a little for me.

I remember buying the cassingle of it before ...Justice came out and liking the B-side (Budgie's "Breadfan") a lot more.

Not giving too much away by saying this is the longest song on the poll.

beyond reed's devastating vocal i think this song is the apex of "gentle" metallica, i.e. "unforgiven," "hero of the day" etc. they just find this gorgeous, simple phrase and wring the most pathos out of it. also love lars' changeable snare hits at the end of each measure

imo lars is often less a shitty drummer than just another guitar

There was a vogue in British letters in the early 20th century to go by one's initials -- EM Forster, DH Lawrence, WH Auden, etc. -- which might explain JRR Tolkien. I dunno why that is, though, maybe the peculiarities of British naming conventions.

JK Rowling may have initially been to obscure her gender to be more marketable? Total speculation however, and we've seen how my speculative skills have panned out in this thread.

Always figure in the cases of J.R.R. Tolkien or W.E.B. Du Bois, it's that they've got too many names.

y'know going back to Disposable Heroes, this was a song that took me like most of my adult life to love. I used to think it was just a gimmicky, hookless speedfest, but really this is one of the most interesting songs on the album, the speed isn't why it's interesting.

something about the way Jaymz roars "I was born for dyiiiiiiiin'" gives me chills now. hard to believe he once actually had principles that he wasn't afraid to commit to on record, years before publicly giving his wishy-washy "I don't really have 'opinions' man" bet hedging....

what was the first Metallica release everybody owned?

for me it was the cd single of "One/Eye of the Beholder", cos it was all I could afford with my allowance and my mom didn't want me using her money to buy "Metallica" albums even though she had no fucking idea who they were.

First owned an audio dub of the One video that I made by holding a cassette recorder up to the TV (also got "We Want Eazy" by Eazy-E and "Punk Rock Girl" by the Dead Milkmen that day). Next bought a cassingle of One/The Prince. Then I bought MOP and AJFA on the same day.

Also, realized I was wrong upthread about Blackened being the first Metallica song I ever heard. I must have been getting my facts wrong in the excitement of the poll.

I had Kill 'Em All (and the "Jump in the Fire" 12") on vinyl, but never owned Ride the Lightning or Master of Puppets. Picked up again with the $5.98 EP on cassette, then ...And Justice For All on vinyl (preceded by the "Eye of the Beholder" cassette single). I think I had the Black Album on cassette, then never bought anything else until Death Magnetic on CD.

Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield from Metallica came over and we did some outrageous partying. Sally was there and I remember there was a girl that James wanted to fuck and I let him take her into my bedroom. They were in there for a while and I had to get in there to get something, so I crept in quietly and saw James head-fucking her. He was standing on the bed, ramming her head against the wall, moaning in that thunderous voice of his, just slamming away, and bellowing "That'll be fine! That'll be fine! Yes! That'll be fine!"
