Wow. Five-year-old me is giddy. "Opportunities"

Mr. Snrub, Saturday, 18 July 2015 16:38 (nine years ago)

Or "Your Wildest Dreams." Or "Nasty." Or "Sledgehammer." Or "No One Is to Blame." So many to choose!

Mr. Snrub, Saturday, 18 July 2015 16:40 (nine years ago)

Missing a few things like Seger and Gabriel who aren't on Spotify (or US Spotify, at least).

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 18 July 2015 16:49 (nine years ago)

It's weird. I don't typically think of 1986 being a really strong or essential year in 80s lore, but this list of songs is so fucking amazingly good. I'mma have to rethink 1986.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 18 July 2015 16:55 (nine years ago)

Ah, 1986. I don't think I ever didn't have the radio on--especially on this particular chart week, as it would have been summer and I had no school to get in the way.

Voted "Invisible Touch" because for some reason I've been re-loving that song a lot lately (stopped my husband mid-sentence last week to crank up the car radio when I heard it come on), but "Papa Don't Preach," "Mad About You," "You Should Be Mine," "No One Is To Blame" and even "Who's Johnny" were all formative for me, and there are at least five other songs here that make me smile just from reading their titles.

Man, I wanna live in 1986 again...

The New Gay Sadness (cryptosicko), Saturday, 18 July 2015 18:07 (nine years ago)

If you want the dream to last, take a chance forget the past.

kornrulez6969, Saturday, 18 July 2015 20:06 (nine years ago)

Key lyric from my jam, When The Heart Rules The Mind

kornrulez6969, Saturday, 18 July 2015 20:06 (nine years ago)

If Belinda released "Mad About You" now, I want to believe it would still br massive. As it is, half of these qualify as Songs of the Summer.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 18 July 2015 20:11 (nine years ago)

I have listened to literally every one of these songs in the past week (working my way through all the charting singles of the '80s, just finished '86) and I seriously can't remember half of these. The other half is mostly good, though!

Something Called Fudge (Old Lunch), Saturday, 18 July 2015 20:11 (nine years ago)

This list mostly reminds me of swimming lessons at the public pool. I still have a hard time not mishearing Howard Jones sing "In the water, in the water, no one ever is to blame".

Something Called Fudge (Old Lunch), Saturday, 18 July 2015 20:15 (nine years ago)

Great jams ar the bottom: Regina's good Madonna rip,Robert Palmer leading Chic through an AOR rocker...

'Opportunities'

Regina's good Madonna rip

Really disappointed this one isn't on spotify. I want to hear it every couple weeks or so.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 18 July 2015 22:17 (nine years ago)

"Love Touch" is an unjustly forgotten 80s Rod single.

Probably "Rumors", but maybe "Secret Separation" which i'd totally forgotten about

I thought "Like a Rock" dated from about 10 years before it did....

Lee626, Saturday, 18 July 2015 23:49 (nine years ago)

"Nasty" was my favorite song when I was six weeks old.

The Reverend, Saturday, 18 July 2015 23:53 (nine years ago)

Pretty good taste for a newborn.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 19 July 2015 00:00 (nine years ago)

Secret Seperation the best Fixx sing imo. Evokes Future Islands.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 19 July 2015 00:58 (nine years ago)

The Fixx song was one of the three in this list I didn't immediately recognize by name alone (the other two are Andy Taylor and Gavin Christopher). It's a good song I suppose, but I have no memory at all of hearing it on the radio in 1986 or anytime since.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 19 July 2015 01:19 (nine years ago)

Pretty good taste for a newborn.

― Johnny Fever, Saturday, July 18, 2015 5:00 PM Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

Yeah, I liked "Crush On You" and "Rumors" a lot too but nothing got me dancing around my cradle like Janet.

The Reverend, Sunday, 19 July 2015 01:56 (nine years ago)

Hard to believe that "Love Touch" peaked at #6. I think Rod said the song was silly in the Storyteller box set. Also don't think Billy Joel thinks much of "Modern Woman". That Regina hit has always been tough to find on CD. Some faves down the chart: Gavin Christopher, Andy Taylor, Robert Palmer.

jetfan, Sunday, 19 July 2015 05:35 (nine years ago)

This list reminds me that I was in a very anti-top 40 phase that summer. Don't love any of these tunes. Will throw a vote to Madonna as best of the lot.

that's not my post, Sunday, 19 July 2015 06:31 (nine years ago)

I didn't know until a few years ago that "Digging Your Scene" is about a straight dude in a gay club for the first time.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 19 July 2015 06:38 (nine years ago)

^ !!!!

1986 Me is saying "'Opportunities' obviously" and would be astonished that 2015 Me is seriously thinking "...or maybe 'Holding Back the Years'". Hated the latter as a child, now it damn near makes me weep.

Maximum big surprise! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Sunday, 19 July 2015 07:06 (nine years ago)

I didn't know until a few years ago that "Digging Your Scene" is about a straight dude in a gay club for the first time.

I didn't know until right now!

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 19 July 2015 07:25 (nine years ago)

was "Opportunities" as beloved in 1986 as "West End Girls"?

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 19 July 2015 13:36 (nine years ago)

1) "Holding Back the Years," 2) "Rumors," 3) "Papa Don't Preach." "Holding Back the Years" is the kind of '80s white British lounge soul I generally despise--I've always been a little apologetic about loving it so much. Story I've told before: when I interviewed Mick Hucknall a couple of years after it was a hit, I wanted to talk about "Holding Back the Years" and he wanted to impress me with how much he knew about jazz.

clemenza, Sunday, 19 July 2015 13:56 (nine years ago)

Missed "Word Get in the Way"--I like that a lot too.

clemenza, Sunday, 19 July 2015 13:58 (nine years ago)

yeah 1986-1987 was the last time that Gloria Estefan could write and sing ballads I care about. The fourth single "Falling in Love (Uh Oh)" is a wonder and should've been a bigger hit

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 19 July 2015 14:12 (nine years ago)

I don't remember "One Step Closer to You," but the Wiki's right: I can't hear the opening bars and not think of MJ's "Bad."

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 19 July 2015 14:30 (nine years ago)

or rather "The Way You Make Me Feel."

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 19 July 2015 14:30 (nine years ago)

lamest Osborne single ever too; by this point he'd recorded several amazing singles.

There were some great albums released in '86: The Queen Is Dead, Black Celebration, Skylarking, Lifes Rich Pageant, Master of Puppets, The Colour of Spring, Reign In Blood, Graceland, So, Please, Brotherhood...

...there's some great songs on this chart too, but mostly it represents a side of '86 I'd prefer to forget about.

Wanted to vote for the Pet Shops here but "Who's Johnny" is just too good

frogbs, Monday, 20 July 2015 17:09 (nine years ago)

"Who's Johnny" took the Scritti Politti sound to the bank.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 20 July 2015 17:10 (nine years ago)

Who's Johnny is the first 45 I ever bought.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 20 July 2015 17:12 (nine years ago)

Just recently learned it was written by Peter Wolf (who provided Weird Al with the synths from the original for his parody).

Something Called Fudge (Old Lunch), Monday, 20 July 2015 17:31 (nine years ago)

o man just saw sweet freedom, i'd have that second tbh. today at least.

people tend to forget how briefly huge Billy Ocean was too: three #1s!

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 23 July 2015 00:37 (nine years ago)

Just voted. Poll says I already voted. Can't remember what I voted for.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 23 July 2015 00:41 (nine years ago)

"loverboy" and "lovergirl" may be my favorite pair of answer songs ever (even if they weren't actually responding to each other iirc), over "my guy" and "my girl" (which i think "my girl" was actually written as a response/cash-in on "my guy").

balls, Thursday, 23 July 2015 00:42 (nine years ago)

speaking of sequels that were much bigger hits than ppl remember: the jewel of the nile. i thought maybe romancing the stone had been slightly forgotten also but i heard ppl mention so much in reference to one of many awful scenes in jurassic world that i guess not.

balls, Thursday, 23 July 2015 00:43 (nine years ago)

Uncle Greil:

. Billy Ocean: “When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Get Going” (Jive/Arista)
This piece of radio fodder isn’t “Billie Jean,” but it’s a beautifully layered conversation–after a hundred shots on the radio, the female chorus seems to be made up of real people. As for the line about “Your love is like a slow train coming”–is that what Bob Dylan meant?

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 23 July 2015 00:50 (nine years ago)

The Jewel of the Nile should've been a Forgotbusters entry.

"When The Going Gets Tough" is Mutt Lange rehearsing "Pour Some Sugar On Me."

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 23 July 2015 00:55 (nine years ago)

it really is

balls, Thursday, 23 July 2015 01:12 (nine years ago)

tbh if the billy ocean in question was "loverboy" i'd be tempted

resulting post (rogermexico.), Thursday, 23 July 2015 01:29 (nine years ago)

I will cut anyone who votes for:

Billy Ocean
Peter Cetera
Kenny Loggins
Jeffrey Osborne
GTR
Berlin

OK, I didn't vote for it, but I still maintain that the Osborne song is really pretty despite that stupid chorus hook.

The New Gay Sadness (cryptosicko), Thursday, 23 July 2015 13:57 (nine years ago)

Fun fact about Cetera:

"Four marines didn't like a long-haired rock 'n' roller in a baseball park [in 1969]," Cetera recounts, "and of course I was a Cub fan, and I was in Dodger Stadium, and that didn't do so well. I got in a fight and got a broken jaw in three places, and I was in intensive care for a couple of days. The only funny thing I can think about the whole incident," he says, "is that, with my jaw wired together, I actually went on the road, and I was actually singing through my clenched jaw, which, to this day, is still the way I sing."

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 23 July 2015 14:29 (nine years ago)

I feel dullsville for this, but I think Sledgehammer is a blast. Runners-up: Belinda Carlisle, Pet Shop Boys, Blow Monkeys.
Also, thoroughly enjoyed the Howard Jones song when it was on Sirius the other day.

campreverb, Thursday, 23 July 2015 15:04 (nine years ago)

naw sledgehammer rules vote with confidence

resulting post (rogermexico.), Thursday, 23 July 2015 21:30 (nine years ago)

I like Sledgehammer (and Big Time) much more now than I ever did in the 80s. Great, great song(s)!

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 23 July 2015 21:34 (nine years ago)

Sledgehammer is fantastic, also it gets people going

niels, Thursday, 23 July 2015 21:46 (nine years ago)

Yes, 'Sledgehammer' has aged very well. It did seem kinda lame to me back in the day when I found Peter Gabriel somewhat indistinguishable from other square-seeming middle aged pop dudes like Robert Palmer and Peter Cetera.

Meaty Mitts (Old Lunch), Thursday, 23 July 2015 22:57 (nine years ago)

you guys haven't heard my karaoke version either

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 23 July 2015 23:00 (nine years ago)

I'm still not quite sure what happened, really. Between 1977-1982 there seemed to be loads of commercially successful art-rock/synth type of records, with Roxy Music of course making their artiest records much earlier than that. Even Duran Duran on their first two albums were very arty in hindsight. Fast forward to '86, and things seemed to get a hell of a lot more poppy, and the productions got big.

You’re being too simplistic and you’re insulting my poor heart (Turrican), Thursday, 23 July 2015 23:12 (nine years ago)

I mean, So is definitely an art-rock record in places, but it's definitely a lot more poppy and sounds much bigger than his previous work.

You’re being too simplistic and you’re insulting my poor heart (Turrican), Thursday, 23 July 2015 23:13 (nine years ago)

how are you defining arty?

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 23 July 2015 23:19 (nine years ago)

"Caribbean Queen" is a 20/10 classic and I will have no future contact with anyone who disagrees.

I didn't realize that Simply Red, or at least "Holding Back the Years," was so well regarded. It was always one of those that bummed me out at the time whenever it came on the radio because I knew I'd have to wait at least 4 more minutes for something good to come on.

That was my second choice, after 'Mad About You'. Something with 'You' in the title was gonna get my vote, no doubt.

Too bad that the wrong (but still good!) Janet song showed up here, as any other single from Control would've snagged my vote with ease.

Meaty Mitts (Old Lunch), Friday, 24 July 2015 02:27 (nine years ago)

I love Nasty. I was bummed how low it came in compared to other Control singles in the Jacksons poll.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 24 July 2015 02:37 (nine years ago)

I voted for 'Invisible Touch', which I've listened to quite a bit on and off in the last few years. (But I think I was barely aware of it when it came out -- was too busy listening to other things.) On the other hand I've always really disliked 'Sledgehammer'. I'm surprised to see it so far ahead here. In fact there are several tracks on this list that I strongly dislike (Berlin, Madonna, Blow Monkeys). 'Holding Back the Years' is alright but I just remember it being No. 1 for weeks and weeks (in the UK) and becoming tiresome for that reason.
