Inspired by Songs where the title is only sung once, as the last line of the song, thought it was time to brainstorm the opposite. The first two came to mind quickly, but having trouble thinking of others...

1. Nirvana - Come as You Are

2. Stone Roses - Love Spreads

LimbsKing, Monday, 27 July 2015 13:38 (nine years ago)

I like that songwriting trick.
I don't have any example in mind, though.
It comes from opera, I think ?

Pavement, "Cut Your Hair"

I might like you better if we Yelped together (Phil D.), Monday, 27 July 2015 14:11 (nine years ago)

Unless the non-word "oohs" that start the song are considered the first line.

I might like you better if we Yelped together (Phil D.), Monday, 27 July 2015 14:12 (nine years ago)

...or unless you count the "Darlin' don't you go and" part either.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Monday, 27 July 2015 14:25 (nine years ago)

yeah, "cut your hair" doesn't work.

AlXTC from Paris, Monday, 27 July 2015 14:35 (nine years ago)

All I've come up with is "Mornin'" by Al Jarreau.

Sexual Harrassment - If I Gave You A Party

Portugal minus Pedro Foster Cage (Spectrist), Monday, 27 July 2015 20:52 (nine years ago)

That doesn't repeat? I know there are variations on the phrase throughout but I'm sure it repeats.

emil.y, Monday, 27 July 2015 21:04 (nine years ago)

I think the actual phrase that is the title does not repeat, just the variations like "I am giving you a party" and "I guarantee a party", and now I can't stop laughing.

Portugal minus Pedro Foster Cage (Spectrist), Monday, 27 July 2015 21:14 (nine years ago)

...or unless you count the "Darlin' don't you go and" part either.

Surely "Darlin' don't you go and cut your hair" is the first line, as the thread title requests. Now if it was first words... Bowie's Fantastic Voyage works too.

really ? I've also always hated that song.

good one "Long and winding road" : I've never noticed !

AlXTC from Paris, Thursday, 30 July 2015 09:19 (nine years ago)

Long and Winding Road is totally disqualified! Maybe you can argue that Paul doesn't properly sing 'and' between 'long' and 'winding' the second and third times, but this is really against the spirit of the survey.

Eyeball Kicks, Thursday, 30 July 2015 11:50 (nine years ago)

how about 'my definition of a boombastic jazz style' ?

Mark G, Thursday, 30 July 2015 12:01 (nine years ago)

regarding TLAWR, ok, I see your point (and maybe that's why I never noticed that before).
that said, yeah, he doesn't sing the exact same words and also he doesn't sing them on the same part of the melody as the first time.
anyway, it's clearly not the bast example !

AlXTC from Paris, Thursday, 30 July 2015 12:09 (nine years ago)

best example

AlXTC from Paris, Thursday, 30 July 2015 12:09 (nine years ago)

really ? I've also always hated that song.

No, it was a ridiculous lie. I was just amused by the idea of Curtis singing it. "Oooh...he's got herpes...oh I'm a naughty, naughty boy"

Turtleneck Work Solutions (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Thursday, 30 July 2015 12:46 (nine years ago)

eheh, would have been... interesting !

gonna be pedantic and point out that most of these titles are not the entire first line.

sleepingsignal, Wednesday, 16 December 2015 16:41 (nine years ago)

If it's the first x words of the first line, it's good.

If it's the last x lines, or there are words before the title, it's not.

Reviving this thread because Madonna's "Take a Bow" came on the radio this morning and that works here.

"My Name Is Jonas" is a 3rd variant of these two threads, the song title is sung exactly twice as the first line and last line.
