You’re being too simplistic and you’re insulting my poor heart (Turrican), Monday, 10 August 2015 23:27 (ten years ago)

I'm listening to this album for the first time in a while and it has occurred to me that this album is going to be 10 years old on Monday. Listening to it now, I'm amazed at how well the album is holding up - it still sounds great to me, and the songwriting is strong throughout IMO. I'd actually go as far as saying this is my favourite Goldfrapp LP, but what does everyone else think? I'm currently struggling to choose a particular highlight from this one!

still love love love this album. toss up between Lovely 2cu and You Never Know. i think Tales Of Us is the absolute classic masterpiece though; a work of genuine genius.

piscesx, Monday, 10 August 2015 23:54 (ten years ago)

Number 1 was always my favorite track on this one, but it's probably their strongest LP. (Either this or Black Cherry.)

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 11 August 2015 00:16 (ten years ago)

Win knee bay go ftw

WHERE WERE ALL OF YOU IN 2013

(I agree obviously)

for sale: baby shoes, never worn your ass (katherine), Tuesday, 11 August 2015 02:17 (ten years ago)

Agree that Tales Of Us is a masterpiece but Black Cherry is still my favourite.

Black Cherry
Tales Of Us
Seventh Tree
Felt Mountain
Supernature
Head First

I don't think they've made a bad album.

I'm voting for Satin Chic which should have been the lead single. I never got the hype for Ooh La La, it just sounded like a rewrite of Strict Machine.

Fly Me Away is one of the most beautiful synth-pop songs ever made

y'all heard this? it's from the deluxe bells-and-whistles whizz bang edition of Tales..

i remember being hugely disappointed with the original, and this album, at the time? didn't hit me as hard as black cherry

lex pretend, Tuesday, 11 August 2015 11:35 (ten years ago)

Same, altho there are some fantastic tracks on this. "You Never Know" is a highlight.

OTM, and it may just be the one I end up voting for!

You’re being too simplistic and you’re insulting my poor heart (Turrican), Tuesday, 11 August 2015 17:14 (ten years ago)

By the way, and this should come as absolutely no surprise to anyone, but I vastly prefer the more electropop side of Goldfrapp than the other side of what they do, so the ones I tend to listen to the most are Black Cherry, Supernature and yes, Head First. Felt Mountain and Tales Of Us are good records, but they're not the side of the band I prefer.

I have more than a soft spot for 'Caravan Girl' from Seventh Tree, mind.

I hope the next Goldfrapp release is a slab of throbbing electropop.

I remember being very disappointed about this, especially after hearing the super promising clips they posted on their website back then, which sounded incredible.

Have note heard the album in a while, but I suspect I'd still prefer Black Cherry.

daavid, Tuesday, 11 August 2015 21:58 (ten years ago)

BTW, I'm torn between "Time Out Of The World" and "Satin Chic"

daavid, Tuesday, 11 August 2015 21:59 (ten years ago)

Voted for 'Fly Me Away'

voting "Satin Chic", really love that slightly de-tuned piano

too young for seapunk (Moodles), Wednesday, 12 August 2015 00:01 (ten years ago)

I prefer their first two, and Tales of Us, but there are some god tracks for sure. Probably a toss up between You Never Know and Let it Take You.

It's odd to me that the album ends and finishes with probably its two most boring songs.

Black Cherry/Tales Of Us >>> everything else they've ever done.

When this album was about to come out I would have easily said that they were my favourite contemporary band but this was a bit disappointing and I ended up losing interest in them for a while.

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 12 August 2015 21:35 (ten years ago)

Surprised to see people saying they found this a disappointment when it first came out. Personally, if all contemporary synthpop records sounded as good as this, I'd be one very happy bunny!

I thought it was pretty limp after loving Black Cherry so much, but it's grown on me quite a lot in the last 10 years.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 14 August 2015 04:05 (ten years ago)

Satin Chic.

For some reason I always imagine the piano is played by a demonic cackling skeleton.

Turtleneck Work Solutions (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Friday, 14 August 2015 15:48 (ten years ago)

"Fly Me Away" is indeed gorgeous, but I think I might cheat a little bit and vote for "Number 1" because I love the Alan Braxe and Fred Falke remix so much.

LeRooLeRoo, Friday, 14 August 2015 20:48 (ten years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Yeah, no complaints about that!

Interesting that the top two weren't even mentioned on the thread. I thought Satin Chic or Fly Me Away would win.

Kitchen Person, Monday, 17 August 2015 02:42 (ten years ago)

"Number 1" b-side (CD-Single only) "Beautiful" is my fave of all the songs c. this album. I am to this day pissed off it didn't get a 12" single release (the 12 was just mixes of "Number 1").

Paul, Monday, 17 August 2015 04:56 (ten years ago)

Huh, just went to Wikipedia to check album page as I thought 'Beautiful' was included on the main UK release and 'Supernature' is today's featured article on the homepage. Freaky coincidence..?

Koko and Let It Take You are in the top half of tracks here imo. Didn't like any of the singles except Ride A White Horse.

nashwan, Monday, 17 August 2015 12:22 (ten years ago)

I would not have assumed that "Slide In" would get many votes. That one particularly sticks out to me as Black Cherry-lite. Grey Cherry, or something. "Ride a White Horse" is my favourite, though.

oh, boy, .GIF! That's where I'm a Viking! (edwardo), Monday, 17 August 2015 14:03 (ten years ago)

Shame Let It Take You didn't get any.

Think I forgot to vote.

eight months pass...

Been listening to this a lot over the last couple of days, and it's been sounding as great as ever. In hindsight, can't believe 'Koko' didn't get a vote... that's become one of my favourites on here!

WHERE'S JIM!? (Turrican), Wednesday, 20 April 2016 21:40 (nine years ago)

bonus track (and "Number 1" b-side) "Beautiful" is still the best: incredible growling distorted guitar glam stomper!

a good pairing with Jewels & Stone's awesome Rachel Stevens track "Every Little Thing".
