President Barack Obama briefly interrupted his summer vacation Friday to share what he's been listening to while on break in Martha's Vineyard. "Due to popular request, here are my vacation playlists," the President tweeted, linking to a pair of 20-song Spotify playlists.

Obama divvied up "The President's Playlist" into two categories: "Volume 1: Summer Day" – featuring artists like Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, Justin Timberlake and Stevie Wonder – as well as "20 picks for a summer night." The latter playlist boasts Beyoncé, Al Green and Leonard Cohen.

The playlists – the first posted on the White House's recently launched official Spotify account – showcases Obama's diverse taste in music, ranging from jazz (Miles Davis, John Coltrane), classic rock (Rolling Stones, Van Morrison), blues (Howlin Wolf) and funk (Sly & The Family Stone) to hip-hop (Talib Kweli & Hi Tek, Nappy Roots, Mos Def), soul (Aretha Franklin, Nine Simone), R&B (The Temptations, Mary J. Blige) and modern rock (Coldplay, Florence and the Machine).

Obama also spotlights a few contemporary artists you wouldn't expect him to listen to: Folk acts the Lumineers and Brandi Carlile, singer/songwriter Aoife O'Donovan and indie rockers Low Cut Connie and Okkervil River. "Cool news abt POTUS playlist. I'm sandwiched btw Aretha and [Timberlake]," Okkervil River's Will Sheff tweeted after receiving the unexpected presidential seal of approval. Low Cut Connie were similarly thrilled to land on Obama's handpicked playlists.

The fact that he has even heard of Okkervil River nearly makes up for the inclusion of Coldplay here.

Despite obligatory Coldplay, a lot better than most politicians.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Monday, 17 August 2015 14:48 (ten years ago)

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 17 August 2015 15:39 (ten years ago)

not a bad list, but if Obama "hand-picked" each tune, I'm a White House intern

Brad C., Monday, 17 August 2015 15:54 (ten years ago)

Maybe I'm too skeptic but the two latin inclusions (one salsa, one hiphop) make me think this were chosen politically. Maybe I'm jaded and Obama does really love salsa because who doesnt?

Yeah, why doesn't someone tell Obama about all the great Okkervil tracks, lazy staff...

ciderpress, Monday, 17 August 2015 21:40 (ten years ago)

niels, Tuesday, 18 August 2015 07:41 (ten years ago)

Sly.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 18 August 2015 08:24 (ten years ago)

Didn't Bush jr release one of these that was pretty great? I remember all the acts on it scrambling to distance themselves from it.

Leonard Pine, Tuesday, 18 August 2015 09:05 (ten years ago)

Voted Aretha but it's a good list, if obama gave me this as a cassette coldplay is the only one i would fast forward

Leonard Pine, Tuesday, 18 August 2015 09:08 (ten years ago)

Coldplay, and that Coldplay in particular, seems really erroneous.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 18 August 2015 09:26 (ten years ago)

Reminds me of the annual "Hey, here's a totally un-vetted list of the books the President is reading this summer" that was vetted and prepared by 50 aides.

i guess Okkervil is surprising because people have never heard of Low Cut Connie?

respectable winner, but absent Thank U, my vote would go to Dylan, Jaggah, or Wolf

Banned on the Run (benbbag), Monday, 7 September 2015 01:53 (nine years ago)

what are the chances that a staffer helped him with these lists?

calstars, Monday, 7 September 2015 01:57 (nine years ago)

I mean does he really have the time to peruse newish music enough to come up with this?

calstars, Monday, 7 September 2015 01:58 (nine years ago)

I wonder how he discovers new music. Maybe he has some buddies on the Hill that turn him on to stuff

calstars, Monday, 7 September 2015 01:58 (nine years ago)

Always loved Green Light but it always gave me an image of a third base coach in the bedroom waving John on
