Every song by Underworld.

This was my thought, ditto for Daft Punk. Difference is that the studio versions of UW songs are great as well

Live versions of electronic music are almost as bad as live versions of rap. I guess if you're doing droney ambient or electroacoustic stuff or some pop crossover thing with vocals, you might be able do some cool shit with it live, but techno and house and other beat-oriented genres just shouldn't be played live, that's not why God made them.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 19 August 2015 18:28 (nine years ago)

Idk if Nico meant specifically "real" instruments versions of electronic/synthetic tracks but that might be more interesting - countless examples of electronic tracks sounding better live esp. by acts like Underworld and Orbital.

Animal Collective circa 2007/2008 were an interesting (counter)example of a lot of material sounding much more electronic in a live context than it had originally. The show I saw in Paris in September 2007 still one of the best shows I've seen, and this live version of "Chocolate Girl" from the following year captures the vibe pretty well:

Every song by Underworld.

except, weirdly, the Everything, Everything versions of "Jumbo" and "Pearl's Girl"

Studio version of "Jumbo" is absolutely perfect IMO so I get that. The EE version of "Pearl's" is great though!

frogbs, Wednesday, 19 August 2015 18:43 (nine years ago)

^^^^^ correct

Tim F, Wednesday, 19 August 2015 18:45 (nine years ago)

EE "Pearl's Girl" is weirdly muffled IMO when compared to the studio version

Remember some buzz about this before but definitely that live version of 'Believe' by GusGus on YT.

I heard the EE version before the original so my perspective is likely skewed. By the way for further proof of UW's live greatness get the 3-disc 2005 Tokyo set with "JAL to Tokyo", "Back in the Fears", "You Do Scribble", some awesome Darren Price tracks, an amazing "Kittens", "Spikee" (!!), and of course all the classics...obviously not as tight as EE but still absolutely essential

frogbs, Wednesday, 19 August 2015 19:22 (nine years ago)

Yeah, that live in Japan set is amazing.

I've been to electronic music shows, and I've really liked a few of them (Mouse on Mars, Pan Sonic, Roisin Murphy, Lumukanda, Murcof). If you're actually there in the audience, of course you can enjoy the immediacy and the collective experience. But listening to live recordings of techno/house/dance/etc is almost always disappointing, because those genres are all about sound and organization of sounds, and those aspects usually suffer in live music. For example, the recent live album by Reagenz sounds like those guys had hella fun spontaneously triggering various loops and effects, and it would've been cool to see that gig, but no way does the album have the depth of arrangement their previous album had, you can't get that by randomly triggering loops.

I'll take that "almost" as a victory!
