nostormo, Tuesday, 1 September 2015 21:28 (nine years ago)

The Well's in the running as well.

... (Eazy), Tuesday, 1 September 2015 21:32 (nine years ago)

This one's called The Well

Acting Crazy (Instrumental) (jed_), Tuesday, 1 September 2015 22:00 (nine years ago)

iirc the first four define the record for me and after that i'm fine with just letting it play

say valley maker!!!

running the loping prob second
followed by rock bottom riser
drinking at the dam hits very personally and has many great lines that resonate w/ my youth drinking/smoking weed in places like that, the "first part of my life i thought women had orange skin" is very evocative and great

this + apocalypse are his best imo

So bury me in wood
And I will splinter
Bury me in stone
And I will quake
Bury me in water
And I will geyser
Bury me in fire
And I’m gonna phoenix

I’m gonna phoenix

colts + pines + well prob my bottom three on here even though i love them

the instrumentation on "mother of the world" is incredible, is that a dulcimer?

marcos, Wednesday, 2 September 2015 00:11 (nine years ago)

i really love sometimes i feel like the mother of the world, it's kinda like the ex-con of this record, whenever i hear it i realise i have constructed an image of the record that excludes it, this very joyous aberration

its poetic sorta redolent-of-youth lines are more successful than drinking at the dam's, too, i think; they're in that just crazy minimal vein he taps in things like our anniversary, just so spare & ultra-vivid (cf a woman is running/a man jumps up and down). i just looked them up on a lyric site to quote them & it's trying to persuade me that it's get into it bad instead of get into a bath with my sister, which is just too much to even countenance right now. but it's so neat & perfect. even when i love the jokes i feel like sometimes smog is Making Jokes, cf pilgrim guts, & it's a richer kind of beautiful to me when he's funny but with this lightest touch.

like some other smog records this is the best smog record until side two, i think, when it isn't anymore

lyrically - this record is his most exposed, beautiful and personal/

and yeah, it's Smog masterpiece (imo)

batting for Palimpsest by a whisker. he's so good at those sparse restrained openers (lets move to the country/the morning paper), and it's surely the pinnacle of that.

matt h, Tuesday, 8 September 2015 10:43 (nine years ago)

both of those tracks are better than Palmpsest, though. this album was played to death amongst my friends, it's been a while since i've listened to it. i suppose my vote would go for Say Valley Maker, but the last two tracks grew on me after everything else. can't really stand Rock Bottom Riser, The Well is sort of corny. In the Pines and Drinking at the Dam are really sublime, though.

"Running the Loping" would be just perfect without the rape joke =/

voted "Colts", 50% based on its own merits and 50% for wrapping up a wonderful album. I especially love how the 'bramble' theme running throughout the album pays off here.
