the world would be a less uptight place if as many people gave hawkwind as VU a chance?

reggie (qualmsley), Friday, 4 September 2015 19:53 (nine years ago)

I remember saying something to EZ Snappin in outloud, probably around 4 years ago that Hawkwind would be as huge for current underground rick as VU was in the 80s

Should be Dave Brock, Lemmy is more the John Cale of H'wind.

Fields of Fat Henry (Tom D.), Friday, 4 September 2015 23:12 (nine years ago)

Tom D OTM.

And as much as I love Hawkwind I'm still picking the Velvets because women and queer theory.

btw there are several moments on that record & elsewhere in the discography when my brain, rightly or wrongly, hears (proto-)krautrock

Hawkwind

Underground Rick (albvivertine), Saturday, 5 September 2015 08:06 (nine years ago)

Early Motorhead did a jam around Waiting For The Man. It's on the bootleg of their first gig.

Dunno if Lemmy even Cale of band since he's not a founder member there are at least a couple of lps before he joins and umpteen after he left.

&yes I hear Hawkwind as one of the closest UK bands to krautrock. Roxy Music are also pretty close on the Eno lps. But it's Hawkwind that shared a member with Amon Duul II, the bassist on X In Search Of Space is the same as I think Phallus Dei and possibly Yeti. I think his name's Dave Anderson but need to check that.

I think I prefer Velvet Underground but do love Hawkwind.

Yeah I think there are multiple strands back and forth between Hawkwind and various bits of Krautrock. Didn't they straight up admit that Opa-Loka off WotEoT was the drummers deciding to "do NEU!" ?

Velvets as "proto-Krautrock" is just ... backwards. A-historical. You don't name the thing that came before after the thing that came after.

Lyrically, they're just such a different kettle of fish I find it impossible to compare. Hawkwind rode sci-fi into outer space, and found aliens that were basically just like humans. The Velvet Underground went into the depths of lower Manhattan and found people and ways of life that were completely alien to American society. I find the Velvets' ~real life~ more complex and compelling than Hawkwind's imaginary worlds.

The real Daddy-or-Chips Dilemma here would be Hawkwind versus Kraftwerk. Like which vision of ~The Future~ would you prefer? Which is more accurate? Robot Robot versus The Robots. High Rise versus Metropolis. "We're merging with our technology and it's GR8" versus "We're merging with our technology and it's ABSOLUTELY FUCKING SHITE." Everything in the German Future is sleek and shiny and aesthetically perfect. Everything in the British Future is awful and decrepit and held together with bits of string and nothing fucking works.

Hmmmm. Which more accurately describes the world we live in now.

Lemmy hates that track.

More importantly...

Lemmy is categorically RONG.

I knew there were links I had forgotten. Yup.

Branwell makes a great case for Hawkwind vs Kraftwerk (though I dont get yr objection as to the 'proto-Krautrock' label, which fits really well imo)

in terms of how people just revere them unquestionably, wholly unopen to hearing them as anything but The Stuff That's Better Than All the Other Stuff, the Velvets are now pretty much The Beatles For People Who Like It A Little Scuzzier

Everything in the British Future is awful and decrepit and held together with bits of string and nothing fucking works.

On that basis my employer's hold music should be Hawkwind.

Lemmy is the Doug Yule of Hawkwind. Which is not an insult at all.
