I will say it again, I am not a fan of Sufjan's work at all until 2015 - other than a couple of tracks - but this album is spectacular. My favorite of the year so far (and I cannot believe I've typed that out).

I haven't really been following critical reaction, but it seems like the likely poll topper is Kendrick Lamar, which seems to be pretty well liked around here. I don't know what the ILM indie whipping boy will be. Maybe Beach House or Tame Impala?

Tame Impala? It's unclear. Personally have never understood the adoration for them, and if they start sweeping year-end lists the backlash could bubble up.

Nah, it got talked about a fair amount, but I don't think anyone really loved it.

I think it's alright.

In fact, I was surprised it's as good as it is considering it seems like the last thing on earth any of the four of them wanted to make.

I wonder if they will be the token oldie band in lists with lots of goodwill for making a new album years after their last?

Tame Impala seems the obvious choice. Are people mad at Carrie & Lowell? Count me as one of the people who dislike Sufjan but loves this new one (Illinoise is especially insincere bullshit to me)

I listened to some Tame Impala because I read a thing where the lead guy said that their biggest influence is Supertramp, but it was a letdown, pretty sure that Tame Impala don't have a Goodbye Stranger or a Dreamer in them

Father John Misty (which I still haven't heard) is the one album I've had forcefully recommended to me by the indie/Americana types who in the past have championed Wilco, Bon Iver, etc. So that's what I expect to fill the slot described here.
