What albums might dominate all the EOY polls that will cause much handwringing on ilm?

Destroyer?

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 20 September 2015 00:05 (nine years ago)

Doesn't seem like Destroyer's year to me. Seems like most people who went crazy over "Kaputt" have been a bit underwhelmed.

all the more reason if it went top 10 in every magazine list then ILM would go apeshit though!

basically who is this years War On Drugs?

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 20 September 2015 00:14 (nine years ago)

Deafheaven probably, though I don't really care.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 20 September 2015 00:15 (nine years ago)

I guess it depends on whether or not Kanye gets his album out.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 20 September 2015 00:15 (nine years ago)

well that's more a handwringing by metallers thing rather than on here tbh

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 20 September 2015 00:16 (nine years ago)

if a metal album makes eoy polls , even the big ilm poll, nobody complains. they might ignore it but noone goes corny metal fuxx or anything

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 20 September 2015 00:17 (nine years ago)

basically its indie that gets the gasface innit

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 20 September 2015 00:18 (nine years ago)

I would guess Sufjan Steven's album will be the highest indie-sounding album to get the most ILM scorn.

Rod Steel (musicfanatic), Sunday, 20 September 2015 00:23 (nine years ago)

that was #1 on RYM last time I looked so good call. Would he make the ILM poll?

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 20 September 2015 00:24 (nine years ago)

I will say it again, I am not a fan of Sufjan's work at all until 2015 - other than a couple of tracks - but this album is spectacular. My favorite of the year so far (and I cannot believe I've typed that out).

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 20 September 2015 00:33 (nine years ago)

I haven't really been following critical reaction, but it seems like the likely poll topper is Kendrick Lamar, which seems to be pretty well liked around here. I don't know what the ILM indie whipping boy will be. Maybe Beach House or Tame Impala?

o. nate, Sunday, 20 September 2015 00:34 (nine years ago)

good call on Tame Impala what about Panda Bear?

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 20 September 2015 00:35 (nine years ago)

Wilco!

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 20 September 2015 00:36 (nine years ago)

Beach House people either seem to like or don't care enough about to dislike. No strong negativity around it.

Tame Impala? It's unclear. Personally have never understood the adoration for them, and if they start sweeping year-end lists the backlash could bubble up.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 20 September 2015 00:37 (nine years ago)

Wilco is so minor in 2015.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 20 September 2015 00:38 (nine years ago)

i bet lex will foam at the gash if that wilco album places

tayto fan (Michael B), Sunday, 20 September 2015 00:38 (nine years ago)

lol

How about Belle & Sebastian?

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 20 September 2015 00:40 (nine years ago)

if Jamie XX dominates I will be handwringing a lot

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 20 September 2015 00:41 (nine years ago)

is that likely?

the siteban for the hilarious 'lbzc' dom ips (wins), Sunday, 20 September 2015 00:42 (nine years ago)

Seems like the consensus on the B&S album is that there are a handful of good songs but it's mostly a drag.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 20 September 2015 00:42 (nine years ago)

I'm so out of touch in re what the big albums are xp

the siteban for the hilarious 'lbzc' dom ips (wins), Sunday, 20 September 2015 00:43 (nine years ago)

I don't know if it will hold up through year's end, but the Courtney Barnett album seems like the most beloved indie album of the year up to this point.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 20 September 2015 00:43 (nine years ago)

Lana Del Rey

tayto fan (Michael B), Sunday, 20 September 2015 00:44 (nine years ago)

Wins me too which is why im asking.. Looking at the acclaimed music and rym links i posted upthread theres a bunch of stuff ive never heard off plus stuff i have like kendrick lamarr

who is father john misty for instance?

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 20 September 2015 00:45 (nine years ago)

Ha, I really dug the B&S album the last time I heard it.

NOT a fan of Father John Misty...

Rod Steel (musicfanatic), Sunday, 20 September 2015 00:48 (nine years ago)

I liked the Father John Misty album the one time I listened to it. esp the lyrics

tayto fan (Michael B), Sunday, 20 September 2015 00:49 (nine years ago)

RYM has never been an accurate predictor for the larger music-loving community. Buncha squares there.

The only reason I even know what Acclaimed Music is is because of all the polls about it we do here.

tayto fan (Michael B), Sunday, 20 September 2015 00:57 (nine years ago)

whats the ILM consensus on the Blur album?

"there's a Blur album???" probably

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 20 September 2015 00:59 (nine years ago)

Nah, it got talked about a fair amount, but I don't think anyone really loved it.

I think it's alright.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 20 September 2015 01:00 (nine years ago)

In fact, I was surprised it's as good as it is considering it seems like the last thing on earth any of the four of them wanted to make.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 20 September 2015 01:01 (nine years ago)

I wonder if they will be the token oldie band in lists with lots of goodwill for making a new album years after their last?

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 20 September 2015 01:05 (nine years ago)

feel like ILM kind of finally actually died a couple years ago but everyone still rallies hard for the eoy polls, making it extra hard to anticipate what's gonna pop

flopson, Sunday, 20 September 2015 01:09 (nine years ago)

The Viet Cong album is ok (or at least better than I expected) but I can't imagine it would be a huge contender for ILM EOY

welltris (crüt), Sunday, 20 September 2015 01:10 (nine years ago)

i mean we rank 77 albums it's pretty easy to sneak into the top 77

flopson, Sunday, 20 September 2015 01:11 (nine years ago)

crut its not really a thread for what might place in the ilm 77 (tho its fine if people do) its more what will dominate the EOY lists everywhere and which of those will get mucho handwringing here. Like what is gonna be this years war on drugs

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 20 September 2015 01:13 (nine years ago)

i dont see anyone handwringing over kendrick lamar being in every list but there will be with say tame impala or sufjan

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 20 September 2015 01:14 (nine years ago)

Tame Impala seems the obvious choice. Are people mad at Carrie & Lowell? Count me as one of the people who dislike Sufjan but loves this new one (Illinoise is especially insincere bullshit to me)

Frederik B, Sunday, 20 September 2015 01:16 (nine years ago)

I listened to some Tame Impala because I read a thing where the lead guy said that their biggest influence is Supertramp, but it was a letdown, pretty sure that Tame Impala don't have a Goodbye Stranger or a Dreamer in them

soref, Sunday, 20 September 2015 01:34 (nine years ago)

i'm surprised nobody's mentioned Carly Rae Jepsen and Kacey Musgraves, who both inspired some major bouts of handwringing over the summer.

some dude, Sunday, 20 September 2015 08:46 (nine years ago)

always wished i'd had a band called Shining Path tbh

OshoKosho B'Gosho (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 20 September 2015 13:28 (nine years ago)

The Sufjan album is perfect. But there will be handwringing, of course. And it will be mostly dumb and insincere handwringing.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned Björk or Vince Staples.

Allen (etaeoe), Sunday, 20 September 2015 13:52 (nine years ago)

I sincerely hate Sufjan (but maybe I'm dumb).

The New Gay Sadness (cryptosicko), Sunday, 20 September 2015 14:33 (nine years ago)

You aren't. He's largely terrible.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 20 September 2015 14:36 (nine years ago)

The only thing worse than this thread is people engaging in handwringing over how unnecessary it is.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 20 September 2015 14:39 (nine years ago)

handwringing is such a shit word

the siteban for the hilarious 'lbzc' dom ips (wins), Sunday, 20 September 2015 14:40 (nine years ago)

since we're for some reason talking about the thread that will be created 6 months from now, it reminds me of when some wiremag thing will place and maybe two posters go "lol this sux what's next" and then the ppl that like it start going MAN I can't BELIEVE how much these SQUARES are CLUTCHING their PURSES about our OUTSIDER music

the siteban for the hilarious 'lbzc' dom ips (wins), Sunday, 20 September 2015 14:45 (nine years ago)

This thread is absurd.

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 20 September 2015 15:04 (nine years ago)

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 20 September 2015 15:57 (nine years ago)

this is Father John for anyone who needs an introduction; one of the best Letterman performances i've seen.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJFEIlvk3_0

i love the guy and he's not my usual cup of whatever. i saw A Well Known British 90s Rock Critic saying he was the worst thing he'd heard all year so he's touching some kind of nerve even with the nay sayers.

piscesx, Sunday, 20 September 2015 16:00 (nine years ago)

i like the way his piano kept playing when he stopped ;)

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 20 September 2015 16:03 (nine years ago)

Father John Misty (which I still haven't heard) is the one album I've had forcefully recommended to me by the indie/Americana types who in the past have championed Wilco, Bon Iver, etc. So that's what I expect to fill the slot described here.

I think the placement of the Susanne Sundfør album is going to surprise a lot of people on here. I don't think people will necessarily have a problem with it but there might be a fair amount of "What is this?" when it makes the top ten.

Kitchen Person, Sunday, 20 September 2015 23:22 (nine years ago)

I admit the FJM album had a limited shelf life for me but I still don't really get what upsets people so much about him

his lyrics amount to a bunch of banal observations, which is fine, except I can't shake the feeling he thinks he's doing something original and/or important

well better for them to get it out the way here!

but I repeat this wasnt a thread about the ILM polls. Its about the magazine/online publication eoy lists that always gets dominated by the same albums - some of which ILM hates and complains about.

Its just meant to be a bit of fun this thread tho its a good way to find out what people rate/hate as im out of the loop this year

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 21 September 2015 01:12 (nine years ago)

whenever i read father john misty's name i think of that episcopalian dude who was on the radio the 1960s trying to be a swinging priest who could appeal to THE KIDS. i can't remember his name precisely. anyway i'm assuming that father john misty sounds exactly like him, and having that thought in my head, i'm pretty sure, gives me more entertainment than anything his actual music might sound like ever could.
