18. Weezer - Pinkerton
17. Stooges - Fun House
16. Roxy Music - "Virginia Plain" (single)
15. Madonna - The Immaculate Collection
14. Beatles - The White Album
13. Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks
12. Kraftwerk - Man-Machine
11. Guns N Roses - Appetite for Destruction

I'm predicting an upset of sorts from the second Win record.

Andy, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh dear, there's some great-crap wave thingy going on with the list. Weezer? Bloody Buddy Fucking Holly Weezer! Another shite Dylan album. Okay maybe I was living under the delusion that there was going to be no Beatles album on the list ;) And to think that Pet Sounds has to be in the top-10 :( Nice to see Appetite getting a nod though, but this stretch overall is depressingly rockist.

Omar, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I doubt the second Win record would even make my Top *400*, let alone anyone else's ;) The "Super Popoid Groove" 12" is quite another matter.

Depressingly rockist? Rockist, maybe, but less depressing than that drab middle stretch. Madonna, Kraftwerk, G'n'R and Roxy may turn up in every list, but in the bottom 20 not the top. The Dylan album is, unapologetically, magnificent: one of the best ever, and I'm proud to have flung points at it. The less said about Weezer the better but it's idiosyncratic at least.

The Beatles record is the one indie kids like, I think. So maybe it's just indie-rockist. Heh.

Tom, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I thought the indie kids were supposed to like revolver better? of course the list isn't over. While I got 3 of 10 from these, I had no Beatles in my list.

Jeff, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think you can blame Weezer on the indie kids more so than you can blame them for the White Album.

Jenny, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Needless to say that big mouthing a rockist attitude doesn't change the fact that I own 7 of these albums ;) Which makes it a neat 50 out of 90 in total.

Omar, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

YES! I knew that my faith in The Man Machine would pay off! Maybe my love for it is due to the fact that it was the first one that I heard, but even when I put my official reviewer's toque on, I realize that it's their most fully-formed album. It's danceable, none of the songs are too long, it's got some reasonably good bass, and it captures the spirit of paranoia of moving into the future without being overly dated like Computer World or Electric Cafe. VICTORY!

Sean Carruthers, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

By the way, I've noticed a real lack of Replacements and Husker Du on this list so far, which are often staples. Has ILM forsaken them, or will they make surprise entries at the very top of the list, along with Revolver?

Sean Carruthers, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My goodness Sean you have a point! There seem to be no Replacements and Husker Du records in the Top 100 (so far). I take it all back - what a great list!!

Tom, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i've been wondering about that too btw. Where's the bloody Replacements? Surely a top-10 position is out of the question (oh I'm defying the Gods here, this will back-fire when Let It Be makes nr.3).

Omar, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If the Beg, Scream, and Shout box set ends up in the top 10, that would be an inspired choice.

scott p., Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

well, i picked it. did someone else? hmmmmmm.

fred solinger, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hey, there are worse Beatles records. All of them, in fact.

So if they had to be in there, the White Album is, as some will know, the only one I can countenance *without* suspecting 60s bores at work :).

Robin Carmody, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So am I to assume that Weezer are.. good? But, it's good to see Eno sneak in there. Will Blood on the Tracks be the highest ranking unhappy masterpiece?

K-reg, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

60s bores, 2001 bores, it's all the same.

Patrick, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hey Tom, obviously Ned isn't the only poophead around here! And I say that with the greatest amounts of love and respect, of course.

Sean Carruthers, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tom and I will have to go off and stink together. I do agree with his assessment, BTW.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Holy shit! Man-Machine made it!! And the rest are good too, except for Weezer, who I've never heard. Surely Kraftwerk are going to scoop the 'best artist' award.

Dr. C, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's been scientifically proven, they're the greatest band of the 20th century

K-reg, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You hold a special place in my heart as the original poophead, Ned, but I'd still love to see the look on your face when Zen Arcade or New Day Rising cruises into the top 10. (Wishful thinking perhaps, considering I didn't vote for either one, stupidly.)

Sean Carruthers, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, I don't mind _Zen Arcade_ at all, at least half of it. But you're presuming I'm investing much attention in the poll anyway -- I haven't really been reading it, just the comments on it. It's only when people note something specific that I give it a look over, thus Tom's comment.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ned graciously, thankfully declined to participate. i have great fear about what his involvement would've led to. ;)

i fully blame MYSELF, though, for coaxing josh into voting. i'm very, very sorry.

fred solinger, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i'm very, very sorry.

I don't think anyone will argue with you there...

the Peasant, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

and to think: you're a moderator. FOR SHAME.

fred solinger, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, you wouldn't have had my direct participation in any event, so there's no point in speculating on things that would never happen. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

NO I'M NOT!

I have quit since my home connection is horrible horrible horrible at the moment, but Tom is a meanie and hasn't removed my name even though he said he would. *sob*

So don't come crying to me when people pull your hair and call you names...

Nicole, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I thought it said Roxette for a moment!...but my hopes were dashed!...I wish I'd voted for Appetite now, as it would be top 10. Oh and I'm glad Weezer are there!!!! Todays predictions: number 8 will be Poison's greatest hits and number 6 will be the Olivia Tremor Control.

james e l, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Weezer!!!!!??? Shocking.

Johnathan, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There's no Amon Duul II so far, that's a bit strange!

james e l, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This installment is embarrassing, I voted for 5 of these records and I really like all but two of them. The White Album though? I voted for "Ob-la-di, Ob-la-da".

Otis Wheeler, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I just helped things along, Fred. And I couldn't have done it without the LEGION OF ADORING FANS that voted for Miles Davis albums, ha.

I gave Pinkerton 5 points and In Utero 9 points. They obviously didn't need much of my help.

If there was a way I could've assigned negative points to the White Album that would've pleased me just fine though.

Josh, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What time does Fred's afternoon, like, begin?

mark s, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You see, Mark, you just don't have the hang of it. Right there was where you should have called Fred a cockfarmer.

Josh, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Guns N Fucking Roses - beating Dylan...I'm not sure how I should feel, though I did have an enlightening thought when I was looking at myself naked in the mirror this morning. Ally and co who have been slagging off tom and fred for the fact taht they hate the way this is posted/lists etc are actually being very clever, meta-commenting on the nature of the ILM forum as a whole, taking the piss out of us by decrying the very lists/ fractured posts they read and contribute to - for whaat is ILM but a fractured post of many lists, a technicoloured dreamcoat of opined genius. I'm impressed. And now it's time for coffeee.

Geoff, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ally and I were actually discussing this during our planning stages and while I intend my cockfarmers to be comments on the fragmented nature of ILM Ally wanted hers to speak to the fragmented nature of postcapitalist culture. A schism resulted.

Roxy Music - "Virginia Plain" (single)

OK, it's a brilliant song -- the false ending alone seals it -- but why the single and not the album? What's not to love about "growing potatoes by the score" or the discordant saxophone?

Did the single somehow more in England? Does a notion of linear history raise its head in this case or is "Virginia Plain" just that much better than the rest of "Roxy Music"

scott p., Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Jesus, I need to go to sleep. That should be "resonate more in England

scott p., Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Weezer??? Whaaaaaaaat???

SleepTilItHurts, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Virginia Plain - It's not a false ending. It's THE ending. The first album should be there - agreed, although it didn't have VP on it until the CD re-issues came around.

Dr. C, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Say what?!? My vinyl copy of the 1st album has Virginia Plain on it? Are sure about this Dr.C? Still, should've been the album (but then again maybe I should have voted for it instead of being a hipster and giving For Your PLeasure the nod)

Omar, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

maybe you have the 'Dutch' version Omar! I'm pretty certain that VP wasn't on the original release. My vinyl didn't have it.

Dr. C, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Goes into saddo "have all my records memorized" mode, and remembers that indeed 1st Roxy album is some dodgy Canadian pressing without gatefold :( Mmm, must remember to find that one later in the shops.

Omar, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dr C is correct: VP isn't on the original. I think there was some "conceptual"/"pop art" dimension to this fact, also, lost in dim memory: singles as stand-alone art items. This was the era when eg Zep didn't release singles, so as not to be confused with T.Rex.

mark s, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This "conceptual"/"pop art" dimension aint dead!!!! Belle & Sebastian still follow this aesthetic.

Nick, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Virtually everyone did this in the 60's. Putting singles on albums didn't become the norm until the 70's.

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I just love the fact that Appetite for Destruction is #11, yo.
