David Bowie

Dylan appears to have gotten too self-conscious for this (or just got bored of it) sometime around his Xtian period

Οὖτις, Monday, 12 October 2015 21:18 (nine years ago)

if you have a nice face then why not put it on your album covers, that's what I say

phil collins has not got a nice face. he is though basically the rembrandt of this shit

Haino Corrida (NickB), Monday, 12 October 2015 21:22 (nine years ago)

I think Gary Numan has put himself on every album cover

frogbs, Monday, 12 October 2015 21:35 (nine years ago)

The Madonna ones, to be fair, are a variety of headshots, head and shoulders, torsos and some that don't fit at all, in a variety of styles. Same with Bowie.

That first row of Phil Collins, on the other hand, is four really unimaginative headshots. Who else has a run like this?

Retro novelty punk (Dan Peterson), Monday, 12 October 2015 22:18 (nine years ago)

Most of Leonard Cohen's album covers do this, the only ones that don't are New Skin for the Old Ceremony, The Future and Dear Heather.

Heather Nova's done it for pretty much every album, but then again she has good reason to.

John Coltrane seems to be on a lot of his lp sleeves. Just listening to Meditations now.

Van Morrison too. Wonder if news of cd releases is to be believed.

Doesn't this describe about 60 percent of solo artists in any given time period? And close to 100 percent before 1970? That said, I hope we can dig up some more like the Lindsey Buckingham and Phil Collins runs above - the ones that, in toto, say something deeply unflattering about the artist.

i for one am shocked that sting could be so vain

Haino Corrida (NickB), Wednesday, 14 October 2015 20:56 (nine years ago)

there is only one studio album of his without his face on it afaict (soul cages)

Haino Corrida (NickB), Wednesday, 14 October 2015 20:57 (nine years ago)

it's interesting how important face covers seem to be to adult-contemporary acts. is it that they're all full of themselves or is it something about the way fans relate to them, the reasons why they seek out their music and want them in their lives? feel like someone like sting is grasped by at least some of his fans as being a sort of spirit guide or wise traveling companion/brother. but i may be reading things in from the guy i used to work for who once named a design firm after one of the albums above.

Gorefest Frump (Doctor Casino), Wednesday, 14 October 2015 21:04 (nine years ago)

I like how even the Ghost in the Machine cover technically contains an image of Sting's face

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 14 October 2015 21:08 (nine years ago)

I guess MOR adult-contemporary acts are likely to have their faces on the cover for practical reasons ie so their fans can identify/notice their albums in the store, and are less likely to be inclined to do something 'arty' with their album covers?

strictly dream-bait fit for moon-gazing (soref), Wednesday, 14 October 2015 21:24 (nine years ago)

established audience as well I guess, you already know them and what they do. I think this is maybe the most boring of all the album covers pictured so far, like just a passport photo style picture of Lionel Richie with literally nothing else going on, obv not trying to sell LR to anyone who isn't already a fan.

how do you get all the album covers all together like this?

Spottie, Friday, 23 October 2015 20:43 (nine years ago)

I don't know how others have done it but I just spent the last 20 minutes working on a javascript that does that (taking all the album covers of an artist's discography from a well-known torrent site and displaying them in a collage)

moans and feedback (Dinsdale), Friday, 23 October 2015 20:46 (nine years ago)

are there "diamondheads" in here? or just out there?

budo jeru, Monday, 5 February 2018 00:30 (seven years ago)

stands to reason ilm must have at least one "diamondhead." i mean we've been able to sustain multiple threads and conversations about late-period wings albums and we're just coming off the very lively billy joel listening thread... there must be someone here with opinions on diamond deep cuts. or "diamonds in the rough" as they're known.

Van Morrison has a few albums with multiples of his face on the same cover (fingers crossed for formatting success)

and many others with a single helping of Van's face

Morrissey is a prime example of this, with the original cover of Southpaw Grammar being the only exception. (He put his face on the cover of the reissue.)
