this is "King" for me easily but I like the foxes and nero songs a lot, and the marina one is her best single

i only recently learned that "I Loved You" is a cover of an old Tamia track!

yeh alright list, 'i'm a ruin' just beats 'black magic' and 'king' for me

nxd, Friday, 16 October 2015 13:15 (nine years ago)

popjustice consistently repping for olly murs' music really is the most #pureideology thing ever

the mercury prize sets a low bar that this prize always fails to vault over

becky, ellie, olly, jess, why do british pop stars have such home counties names these days

lex pretend, Friday, 16 October 2015 13:55 (nine years ago)

what no pc music

j/k i really like that marina single but i'll do the list the honour of listening to everything else before voting for it

twunty fifteen (imago), Friday, 16 October 2015 14:00 (nine years ago)

The Marina and the Becky Hill tracks are good, but I'm voting Years and Years.

daavid, Friday, 16 October 2015 22:05 (nine years ago)

Marina, then Foxes, then idc

Johnny Fever, Friday, 16 October 2015 22:13 (nine years ago)

All the stuff on this list I'm familiar with I adore, but I'm never going to actively listen to an Olly Murs single. That Jess Glynne album isn't a brilliant listen but the best bits are incredible and I love that song. I wish the Ellie Goulding sounded like the version DJ Q plays instead of a ballad when I hear it in the wild.

King just over Black Magic

ufo, Saturday, 17 October 2015 11:38 (nine years ago)

King, narrowly over the sorry-for-party-rocking Rumble.

I'm A Ruin by a long way.

Black Magic originally struck me as a semi-clever recombobulation of Blank Space, but it's grown on me a little. King sounds like a Hot Chip song from a few years ago which in turn sounded like La Isla Bonita. I don't love it. Not sure if I know many of the other songs other than Uptown Funk (which I know a lot of ILXors hate on principle), but I voted for it anyway cos it kind of towers over everything else this year in terms of everything I guess.

Black Magic or King for me by some margin

groovypanda, Thursday, 19 November 2015 10:59 (nine years ago)

let's do a liveblog

‘BLACK MAGIC’ by Little Mix - yeah this is good, i heard this somewhere i think - much better than the first little mix i heard idk maybe i've changed not them
‘BODY TALK’ by Foxes - this is a bit faceless but the synth is nice. too 80s ultimately
‘DON’T BE SO HARD ON YOURSELF’ by Jess Glynne - ugh no this is boring, all that uptempo soul piano and dull vocal style. can't be dealing with this, there's nothing there. yucky strings too. oh but there's a drum solo! that bit was cool
‘I LOVED YOU’ by Blonde and Melissa Steel - this isn't bad or anything but it sounds really derivative. there are a few nice melodic moments in how the vocals rebound off the house piano
‘I’M A RUIN’ by Marina & The Diamonds - like, after only a few seconds this is obviously the best thing here (probably). just develops so well, there's much subtlety in this big dumb tune. the only possible downer is that it is a downer - it doesn't leap out of the speakers, it's pop for depression, for introspection. but this is a good thing
‘KING’ by Years & Years - sounds a bit like how i imagine late-period Genesis to sound. should do more with its structure given the promising opening synth-yodel
‘LOSING’ by Becky Hill - can't really place this, which is probably a good thing. the production is gorge, those distant backing vocals, it's like slowdive or something. much prefer this kind of subliminal hook to the years & years one. so far this is a close 2nd, might even vote for it if the wind changes
‘LOVE ME LIKE YOU DO’ by Ellie Goulding - yeuch fuck off this is creepy. do people really like ellie goulding on ilx? it's just such horrible harsh triumphant blare everywhere, cloying and desperate
‘SEASONS’ by Olly Murs - joke nomination i see
‘THE THRILL’ by Nero - the first one that hasn't been the first youtube hit for its title! gets brownie points for this, has a nice dubsteppy thing going on, would expect it to effectively soundtrack some contemporary youth drama. bit dull obv
‘TURN THE MUSIC LOUDER (RUMBLE)’ by KDA, Tinie Tempah and Katy B - this has a bit of spirit to it! absolutely nothing that grips me though
‘UPTOWN FUNK’ by Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars - d/q on account of being 'uptown funk'

becky hill emerges as surprise contender to marina; little mix also liked

Marina second out? Who are you people

It's obviously not terribly serious but the format is flawed as they do a draw to pair songs up and then discuss them and eliminate one.

So they've had Becky Hill v Marina and Little Mix just knocked out Ellie Goulding
